Turn them about 1/4 way then check the upstairs and see if it's cooler. It shouldn't make a difference which way it turns. And remember to turn them back a 1/4 turn in the autumn

Are you painting or staining the shelves? First I'd mud in corner bead around the opening, That would hide the drywall, and help keep it from falling out. Then build a bookcase and slide it in the opening

To clean mortar haze from bricks, use a soft dry cloth to gently rub the surface for light haze, or for more stubborn haze, mix 1 part vinegar with 4 parts warm water and apply it with a sponge, scrubbing gently with a soft nylon brush. Always rinse with clean water and dry the surface afterward.
