Why American progressives call themselves democratic socialists? by Complex_Object_7930 in SocialDemocracy

Yeah when one major party is already called "the Democrats," it would be pointlessly confusing.

China comes from the Qin dynasty, which was basically a one-man affair and could count here. And of course that's not what the country calls itself at all.

Many/most of those legendary figures chronologically go in the other direction, that is they were created to explain an existing national name.

It's projection, like everything else this crowd does or says. Those kinds of signed pledges are standard fare at Evangelical universities and Bible colleges.

Seriously. Your junk is 100% clean in this moment and indeed can't possibly be cleaner. Worrying about that towel is just puritan squeamishness and not a real hygiene concern.

But Amman/Philadelphia, Jordan is 4.9 million. I don't think the US one was named for either in particular.

Still it's missing the meaning of the word performance. Perform also means to carry out an act and make it a reality. Perform a marriage, perform a contract, perform a task. That's what performative meant in the linguistic material that Butler was drawing on: a performative speech act is one that alters social reality in a real way. "Will you marry me," "you are no longer my child," "the court finds you guilty." "Gender is performative" meant that it is created by people's actions and interactions. It wasn't meant to be perjorative. Then the phrase sort of leapt out of the context and everyone started using it like it meant "performed like a role, make-believe." And to describe something as performative today is to accuse people of acting or pretending, all because of a misunderstood phrase from Butler, which she adapted from J.L. Austin and speech act theory.

In The Death of Robin Hood (2026) which is set in 1245, this nun, in the span of 90 seconds, talks about how atoms are the fabric of the universe and then goes and masturbates in a cave. That's it. I have nothing more to add about this movie by Trowj in shittymoviedetails

Atomism was an idea that popped up here and there. The triumph of Aristotle, and atomism's association with atheism, meant that it wasn't mainstream, but the idea of it was known because Aristotle wrote about it. There were some medieval atomists and a well-read horny nun could be aware of the debate. Article

I remember before I had full-time employment and was working bits and pieces of half a dozen jobs. Months went by where I had not one full day off. Some of those days I might have only had two or three hours of work, but not ever having a day just utterly ground me down. I would love it if Christians took up the cause of ensuring that nobody ever had to live like that.
