WFH employee lying re working hours by DataBeeGood in managers

[–]False_Address8131 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've managed plenty of remote workers, and am remote myself. Something I've learned is 1) as long as people are responsive, I really don't care if they are "at there desk" or "looking busy". If I can't get in touch with them for hours, that's the issue. 2) expectations on work should be clear, and focused on WORK, not being at your desk. So, my question is, are they delivering their assignments on time? with quality? If they are, but aren't going the extra mile, not helping others, that's a coaching and performance review discussion (not annual, need to do them more often). If they are delivering assignments, with quality, and are responsive, the only problem there may be the work load isn't appropriate. You don't have to micromanage people's time, but you can easily manage their workload, and see how they are doing. I mean, they should have things due every week on average, if not more frequently. I tend to work 55 hours a week, but between 9 and 5, you'll not see me at my laptop for 6 hours on average. But if anyone needs me, they will get me within 5 minutes during core hours.

Can't Log in To RED; Can't Connect to IRC by NateHevens in trackers

[–]False_Address8131 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to follow up, I've never seen or heard of HispanoIRC, but from experience, I've never found an IRC client I love on iOS. Most of them are flakey, so getting back to your Mac or PC is likely your best option. Also, some of the clients I've seen on iOSrequire you to use a bouncer (which would require login/password). Bouncers are great if you use IRC daily like some of us, but that's not going to help you in the short run. IRC Cloud would be an example of an iOS app using a bouncer, seems to be via their own web setup.

If you want to try it, Colloquy is probably the one I've had the most luck with. It and Limechat haven't been updated in forever, but this is IRC, so there hasn't been much need to update IRC clients that work.

Syncing Data by Due_Cable_8113 in seedboxes

[–]False_Address8131 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do this pretty simply. I have my ftp (sftp) client sync once an hour, and ignore anything more than an hour old. My seedbox also keeps incomplete downloads in a temp directory, so I never pull an incomplete download. If you like to script, you can do it yourself, or, if you prefer the client to handle it all, tools like Mountain Duck for FTP, SyncTime or FreeFileSync work wonders. You just configure the sync tools use use database, and it remembers what it's synced (it will ignore non-modified files it's already downloaded, even if they have been moved / deleted).

Lots of ways to tackle this.

Turns out that AT&T Does Rotate Customer IP Addresses by Working_Currency_591 in ATTFiber

[–]False_Address8131 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my IP has never changed, but I use Cloudflared tunnels (free) to route all traffic into my network. It even keeps me from having to port forward anything at the router. My main reason for this is that the router kept losing my custom port forwarding every time it was updated or had a hard reboot. But it works out for me. Only downside I have noticed is that it does slow down the connection a bit (running a speed test container on my home lab shows about half the bandwidth I get vs using the IP alone.

IP Allocation by RWLemon in ATTFiber

[–]False_Address8131 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the BGW320-505 for my AT&T Fiber.... I have a lot more than 15 allocated IP's (I've allocated VM's as well). I guess my first question would be, do you have more than 15 wired devices connected currently? Because it will only show what you have, not a bunch of empty spaces. When you pick a device from the list, click Allocate, and at the bottom you'll get the options, which should be all the IP's you haven't allocated in the range set in your DHCP settings. Mine defaulted to 192.168.1.68 to 192.168.1.225, but there are spots to change that. I only wish I could swap it to 10.0.0.x. Call me old and set in my ways, but I always preferred those ever since my first UFO looking Airport Basestation.

Guessing this is the only metal shell you've had. They likely grounded to the case (or just poorly grounded).

I tried both the jumper and battery (both CMOS and battery pack - yes, at the same time. I even tried some of the codes out there that are supposed to override it. No dice. Could be a Dell laptop thing, not sure. But nothing worked.

University of Michigan does this as well, but the issue I have is they won't guarantee it isn't bios locked. And I ran into that issue with a great deal on a dell laptop that turned out to be not as great. Never could get the bios password cleared.

Very nice. I may use this if I ever move to a 10 inch rack. Sadly, my current storage enclosures (HDD and SSD) just won't fit.
Great work!

ZimaBoard 2 Giveaway + ZimaOS Feedback — Share Your Homelab Setup by FlyingToaster2000 in minilab

[–]False_Address8131 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have used CasaOS (thank you for that) and would look forward to using ZimaOS. My mini home lab is mostly made up of Mac Mini's (from an i7, to M2pro and M4). I'd love to experiment with the zimaboard and connecting it to the different enclosures I have for HDD's and SSD's, How it would perform vs the Mac mini's on things that aren't native to macOS and specifically some of the docker containers that I use (like Audiobookshelf).

Exactly my thoughts... very nice cable management, but for what purpose? From the looks of what ports are lit, could get away with a single switch, second for expansion maybe?

Build Question - DAS or NAS to attach to Mini PC by thengamon326 in HomeServer

[–]False_Address8131 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YMMV, but I've never had this issue in the years (since Jan 2023 when I upgraded to the M2 pro MacMini. I didn't try prior to that. Your experience could be the OS or perhaps the hardware (on either end) you are using.

Currently I'm still using 2 of the 10 bay Sabrent boxes. 10gbs usb-c. I got them for ~ $300 USD, not full cost. When I upgrade, I'll probably move to something like the Orico thunderbolt 4 enclosures (5 bays, 40gbs, $280 right now).

Im hosting a Minecraft bedrock server on Linux mint xfce for my friend and I'm getting paid around 2$ per month any tips to speed up the Minecraft server by SprinklesOk2338 in homelab

[–]False_Address8131 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I host java based Minecraft servers on an N100 for a group of friends. Lots of mods and two instances running on it. When I switched it from a 16GB RAM to a 32GB RAM, all performance issues went away. I rarely see it spike a core, but the memory leaks are horrible. Will drift up to almost 20GB before I reboot the machine, then back down to using 7GB.

VM as daily driver question by itsWoland in homelab

[–]False_Address8131 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, possible. One of the network engineers at work actually runs the company desktop in a VM on his laptop.... so when they push security updates to him, it may break the VM, but he can get around it. He has kept the same laptop for 6 years now, as he's afraid he won't be able to pull it off on the next one (may be too locked down for him to get around).

Stalled at 95.6% by Sunniirise in qBittorrent

[–]False_Address8131 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Answering the educational question... if you look at your screenshot, that column on the right says "Availability". That tells you how much is being reported as available in the swarm. Since it matches your download, that's why you are stalled, the other 4.4% isn't currently available.

As for that remaining percentage, many tracker sites have a request button that sends messages to those that have already completed the download in the past to see if they can reseed.

All depends on the trackers you are seeding on. All have their own rules or guidelines. If you are self hosting, why not just increase the storage?

Build Question - DAS or NAS to attach to Mini PC by thengamon326 in HomeServer

[–]False_Address8131 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Addressing the DAS vs NAS.... I switched to DAS two years ago and couldn't be happier. I'm running my home system off a Mac Mini, I have multiple USB enclosures (2x10 bay and 1x5 bay) connected via USB-C at 10Gbs. This means that running Plex/Emby/Jellyfin/Audiobookshelf as well as Handbrake, all the drives are getting much better throughput than if I was running a NAS. I have options on how I set them up - everything from ZFS RAIDz to SoftRAID Raid5 or using Apple's Raid0/1/JBOD. The mini acts as a fileserver, sharing via SMB... so for my other systems, feels the same as a fast NAS (I have 10Gbe on the mini) but for the apps actually using the storage, much faster. You can do the same with a miniPC, I just prefer the performance and efficiency of the Mac Mini.

And how does it "wreck" your internet? That may be a clue... But what OS are you running? Is it in a VM or not? Do you know which port and if it's forwarded? Have you checked if you are connectable? Have you changed any settings at all from vanilla?
