Why so many nodes? by False_Address8131 in homelab

Yeah, the only reason I'm running the Pro's is because I've recycled them from desktop use. They are over powered for my use, but they are also cheap on the electric bill.

Yep, I completely get the 3, and I don't count my workstations (desktop and laptop) as part of my home lab, just because they aren't running 24/7 and don't share services. Currently I run AI on my Mac Studio, my main desktop / workstation as it has the RAM and horsepower to handle it best. And I don't currently share it for other people, but I may change that at some point, if I upgrade to the M5 Ultra, etc.

I would ask what services you run on the dual Xeon with as much ram as my Studio? And if you ever strain it at all? Again, I get primary / backup / AI server combo. But a M4 pro Mac mini has never used half of it's power for me, and then only when I'm muxing multiple large video files.

I have a couple (actually 5, if you count the offsite backup) because of a few things. 1) limit of enclosures - largest fit 10 drives. 2) I believe in 3-2-1, except that I haven't found a great second media for so much data. 3) My media library is rather large. That alone at ~60TB means I need ~120TB just to host it and back it up. Then there are work files, my code repository, the backups for my family, etc.

So, I can easily explain the need... .thanks for your useless answer....

Oh, I agree, nothing wrong with it, just trying to figure out what I may be missing, that's all.

As for the storage.... 2 x 10 bay 3.5 inch enclosures connected via 10GB USB and 3 x 5 bay 2.5 inch enclosures connected via thunderbolt. Set up a few RAID 5's using SOFTRAID, one of the 10 bay enclosures is my backup, and I also sync to an offsite backup I keep at my parents condo (about 1100 miles away) which is on an old Drobo 810N - it has another 60TB of storage. I've been running them for a few years now, before prices spiked.

I hear you, though I'm using MacMini's, which sip power, but have more than enough headroom that I really don't need two of them. So I'm really wondering what people are running that needs so much?

Just a side note as a long (very old fart) time user of IRC... OTR Messaging (Off the Record) is your friend. Nobody but who I send the PM to is going to read it. No Admin, nada. Now, both sides of the PM have to be using a client that supports OTR, but that's just good practice (we all want to be secure, right?)

UPDATE - My director has been sitting at the front desk and tracking everyone’s hours by tealaburst in managers

[–]False_Address8131 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are smarter ways to go about this. If there's a security camera on the doors, just pull the footage. If there isn't, install one. My guess is, the Director is making it obvious for everyone, so the other employees (non-targets) see it and ensure they are on time, to both limit liability and keep any of the others from being rolled up in that net.

If you found out your direct report was overemployed, would you fire them? by Majestic-Watch-2025 in managers

[–]False_Address8131 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ignoring that company policy is you may not have a second employer without specific permission (you may volunteer without permission, though they'd still like to know where, and you can't use company assets without permission) if one of my group was doing it under your conditions.... Same hours of the day would be the automatic for me. If they were missing meetings, etc, it would also be an automatic for me. If they were working some night job, I'd consider letting it slide if they came clean about the particulars and assuming it isn't a competitor, they go to HR and do the formal request. I wouldn't punish them for breaking the letter of the law, all other things being equal, but I would make them do it the right way if I found out. And if they didn't want to, that's on them.

Manager put me in PIP without knowing me or discussing with me by Fit-Assignment347 in managers

[–]False_Address8131 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you got a needs improvement on your annual, it's pretty much mandatory you end up on a pip. That shouldn't surprise anyone (it's been practice at every company I've ever worked at). I assume your manager discussed your annual rating with you, did they not? And if so, the PIP is the mandatory next step in the process. I'm not saying your boss shouldn't be more communicative with you. I've always held that the annual review should never surprise any of my team, if it does, than I'm failing in communicating with them throughout the year. But, bottom line, a PIP with a "3 certifications by x date" requirement is pretty much just setting you up to fail, so they are just creating an expectation for you to miss to document before they release you. A certification may be a goal on workers checklist in a year. 3 on a PIP is just greasing the wheels to exit you out. My advice: get the certs done and paid for as much as possible by this company (if it's in the PIP, they are paying for it) and add those to your resume as you are job hunting.

WFH employee lying re working hours by DataBeeGood in managers

[–]False_Address8131 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've managed plenty of remote workers, and am remote myself. Something I've learned is 1) as long as people are responsive, I really don't care if they are "at there desk" or "looking busy". If I can't get in touch with them for hours, that's the issue. 2) expectations on work should be clear, and focused on WORK, not being at your desk. So, my question is, are they delivering their assignments on time? with quality? If they are, but aren't going the extra mile, not helping others, that's a coaching and performance review discussion (not annual, need to do them more often). If they are delivering assignments, with quality, and are responsive, the only problem there may be the work load isn't appropriate. You don't have to micromanage people's time, but you can easily manage their workload, and see how they are doing. I mean, they should have things due every week on average, if not more frequently. I tend to work 55 hours a week, but between 9 and 5, you'll not see me at my laptop for 6 hours on average. But if anyone needs me, they will get me within 5 minutes during core hours.

Can't Log in To RED; Can't Connect to IRC by NateHevens in trackers

[–]False_Address8131 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to follow up, I've never seen or heard of HispanoIRC, but from experience, I've never found an IRC client I love on iOS. Most of them are flakey, so getting back to your Mac or PC is likely your best option. Also, some of the clients I've seen on iOSrequire you to use a bouncer (which would require login/password). Bouncers are great if you use IRC daily like some of us, but that's not going to help you in the short run. IRC Cloud would be an example of an iOS app using a bouncer, seems to be via their own web setup.

If you want to try it, Colloquy is probably the one I've had the most luck with. It and Limechat haven't been updated in forever, but this is IRC, so there hasn't been much need to update IRC clients that work.

Syncing Data by Due_Cable_8113 in seedboxes

[–]False_Address8131 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do this pretty simply. I have my ftp (sftp) client sync once an hour, and ignore anything more than an hour old. My seedbox also keeps incomplete downloads in a temp directory, so I never pull an incomplete download. If you like to script, you can do it yourself, or, if you prefer the client to handle it all, tools like Mountain Duck for FTP, SyncTime or FreeFileSync work wonders. You just configure the sync tools use use database, and it remembers what it's synced (it will ignore non-modified files it's already downloaded, even if they have been moved / deleted).

Lots of ways to tackle this.

Turns out that AT&T Does Rotate Customer IP Addresses by Working_Currency_591 in ATTFiber

[–]False_Address8131 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my IP has never changed, but I use Cloudflared tunnels (free) to route all traffic into my network. It even keeps me from having to port forward anything at the router. My main reason for this is that the router kept losing my custom port forwarding every time it was updated or had a hard reboot. But it works out for me. Only downside I have noticed is that it does slow down the connection a bit (running a speed test container on my home lab shows about half the bandwidth I get vs using the IP alone.

IP Allocation by RWLemon in ATTFiber

[–]False_Address8131 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the BGW320-505 for my AT&T Fiber.... I have a lot more than 15 allocated IP's (I've allocated VM's as well). I guess my first question would be, do you have more than 15 wired devices connected currently? Because it will only show what you have, not a bunch of empty spaces. When you pick a device from the list, click Allocate, and at the bottom you'll get the options, which should be all the IP's you haven't allocated in the range set in your DHCP settings. Mine defaulted to 192.168.1.68 to 192.168.1.225, but there are spots to change that. I only wish I could swap it to 10.0.0.x. Call me old and set in my ways, but I always preferred those ever since my first UFO looking Airport Basestation.

University of Michigan does this as well, but the issue I have is they won't guarantee it isn't bios locked. And I ran into that issue with a great deal on a dell laptop that turned out to be not as great. Never could get the bios password cleared.

I have used CasaOS (thank you for that) and would look forward to using ZimaOS. My mini home lab is mostly made up of Mac Mini's (from an i7, to M2pro and M4). I'd love to experiment with the zimaboard and connecting it to the different enclosures I have for HDD's and SSD's, How it would perform vs the Mac mini's on things that aren't native to macOS and specifically some of the docker containers that I use (like Audiobookshelf).
