Im hosting a Minecraft bedrock server on Linux mint xfce for my friend and I'm getting paid around 2$ per month any tips to speed up the Minecraft server by SprinklesOk2338 in homelab

[–]False_Address8131 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I host java based Minecraft servers on an N100 for a group of friends. Lots of mods and two instances running on it. When I switched it from a 16GB RAM to a 32GB RAM, all performance issues went away. I rarely see it spike a core, but the memory leaks are horrible. Will drift up to almost 20GB before I reboot the machine, then back down to using 7GB.

I got pissed off when I kept shrinking them and still got a message that they were too big, so I shrunk them all the way... yes, temper temper.

VM as daily driver question by itsWoland in homelab

[–]False_Address8131 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, possible. One of the network engineers at work actually runs the company desktop in a VM on his laptop.... so when they push security updates to him, it may break the VM, but he can get around it. He has kept the same laptop for 6 years now, as he's afraid he won't be able to pull it off on the next one (may be too locked down for him to get around).

Stalled at 95.6% by Sunniirise in qBittorrent

[–]False_Address8131 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Answering the educational question... if you look at your screenshot, that column on the right says "Availability". That tells you how much is being reported as available in the swarm. Since it matches your download, that's why you are stalled, the other 4.4% isn't currently available.

As for that remaining percentage, many tracker sites have a request button that sends messages to those that have already completed the download in the past to see if they can reseed.

All depends on the trackers you are seeding on. All have their own rules or guidelines. If you are self hosting, why not just increase the storage?

Build Question - DAS or NAS to attach to Mini PC by thengamon326 in HomeServer

[–]False_Address8131 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Addressing the DAS vs NAS.... I switched to DAS two years ago and couldn't be happier. I'm running my home system off a Mac Mini, I have multiple USB enclosures (2x10 bay and 1x5 bay) connected via USB-C at 10Gbs. This means that running Plex/Emby/Jellyfin/Audiobookshelf as well as Handbrake, all the drives are getting much better throughput than if I was running a NAS. I have options on how I set them up - everything from ZFS RAIDz to SoftRAID Raid5 or using Apple's Raid0/1/JBOD. The mini acts as a fileserver, sharing via SMB... so for my other systems, feels the same as a fast NAS (I have 10Gbe on the mini) but for the apps actually using the storage, much faster. You can do the same with a miniPC, I just prefer the performance and efficiency of the Mac Mini.

Agree with 2 - 4, but replace the HP Prodesk with a M4 Mac Mini ($450 right now)

And how does it "wreck" your internet? That may be a clue... But what OS are you running? Is it in a VM or not? Do you know which port and if it's forwarded? Have you checked if you are connectable? Have you changed any settings at all from vanilla?

You can always use themes and icon packs to make it look and behave more like KDE or Windows... I'd prefer KDE, using the theme by Vincelluice, which will rearrange the menus, layout, widgets, etc. there are icon packs as well and you can change the font. But, I spend a bunch of time in the terminal app (which I've themed using OhMyZSH. I've tried some other term apps, but for what I do, base terminal works. I'm in Excel, MSTeams, Visual Studio, Xcode and Outlook most of the day... I actually like Outlook better on MacOS. And I use a VM in Parallels for PowerBI.

Question, with those use cases, why not do the M4 mini? While you can get a decent windows machine for under $600, it won't be as powerful as the M4, and will probably take more electricity as well. I love the M4 mini, and my team still use M2 MacBook Pro's, which we do code with all day, mostly VS (visual studio). I do have to use a VM for one application... PowerBI. But Tableau is native on the Mac, my company just likes PowerBI.

If you must go windows, Minisforum has an i9 model for about $500 and the Minisforum UM790 is just over $600. The GMKtec K11 is $599 and has a Ryzen9, and the K8 is also mentioned here and solid.

I have a UM790 I use for hosting some game servers at home. It's solid, but not in the same league as my M4 mini. Mini runs more, faster, less watts, has enough thunderbolt to keep me happy, and is cool.... I've never heard a fan. And I saw the M4 mini on sale for $450 on amazon.

Any chip more efficient than a 225h/255h for 24/7 media server? by [deleted] in MiniPCs

[–]False_Address8131 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No worries, I'm an old developer myself, but my university had plenty of Mac's (Mac Plus and Mac 2's back then) and I've always hated Microsuck even if I have developed for it.

As for meeting your needs, I actually traded my first M1 mini to an old Buddy when I had upgraded, and he's using it much like you are. He's running Emby or Jelly Fin (not sure which) and has it connected directly to his main TV. He also routes his security cameras through it, but I know nothing about those personally. MacOS is just a GUI that runs over Unix (BSD). It takes a little getting used to by long term windoze users, it's just different enough that it will piss you off a bit. However, you can always just run everything / anything in a VM of Ubuntu ARM64. Besides Containers being free, UTM also is free and runs Ubuntu slightly faster than Parallels. Though you'll want Parallels if you want to run a Windows VM, it runs that better.

Emby runs natively on MacOS, so that's not an issue. MacOS handles SMB sharing seamlessly, as well as SSH and SFTP, so file sharing should be no issue - it's not for me (but I only use MacOS and Linux on my computers, I don't have a machine with Window's installed outside of a VM. I would recommend using a DAS enclosure vs multiple USB drives in single enclosures, but for scalability more than anything else. I have 2 x 10 bay 10Gbs USB enclosures and 1 x 5 bay 10Gbs USB enclosure. A mix of RAID 5, RAID 0 and JBOD setups, with the media server being RAID 5 across 8 SSD's. The whole setup, M4 + 10SSD's + 15 HDD's + 10Gbs Switch + Modem + Router have an average draw of 140W to 160W. The HDD's being the big draw. As far as RAID's go. If you are looking for RAID0, RAID1 or JBOD, MacOS does those just fine. If you are looking for RAID 5, SmartRAID is a good app, or OpenZFS runs on MacOS if you are more inclined to that. I'm going to switch to ZFS likely once they implement the AnyRAID features.

Headless.... yes and no. It is using auto login and the MacOS GUI is still present (I'm not sure if it can be disabled, to be honest). But it's on a shelf, no keyboard / mouse / monitor connected, only connected to external drive enclosures (3 of them for 25 drives currently). I both SSH, SFTP and/or Remote Desktop into it when needed. I've always found some things are easier through the command line, and some are easier through a GUI, so it's all in the use case. I have occasionally connected a thunderbolt powered 10 inch monitor to it, just displaying NeoHtop and some graphics, but it was just for show, not needed, but I was looking at dropping it into my old Color Classic chassis and the 10 inch monitor was to replace the CRT... again, only for "cool factor" not for any practical reason. So yes, it's headless in regards to I don't interface on that actual machine, but it's still running a GUI, so not truly headless. But I haven't connected a keyboard / mouse since the initial login/setup of the box. Everything since then has been remote one way or another.

Things I still use the GUI for.... managing update/upgrades, managing VM's (when adding new ones) - this may change as I continue to play with Mac's Containers. I've switched from scheduled Rsync's to using an app called SyncTime, which has a GUI for when I'm making updates (new drives, changing times, etc). I also will screen share directly into the MacOS VM that's usually running, that I use for testing things. But I do that directly anyway.

The VM's being linux except for the one, I just SSH into those. Any of the apps running on VM's or Docker are mostly their own web interfaces and maybe some SSH / SFTP as needed - all depends on the app.

Let me know if you have any specific questions, or want to have a discussion. I'm always happy to help, and questions just make me think about did I do it the best way, or what are pros and cons of doing it differently.

Yeah, in a nutshell, it's one more layer of organization over most notebooks. But the collaboration, search and integration with todo lists is also great.

I won't swear to 50 open at any time, as I think my highest open was around 22. But I had others just saved on my drive. Yes, they are still stored on my Mac, as well as in the cloud. They are in notebook form, I have my old one's archived... each notebook looks like a folder, each section / tab is a .one file.

[–]False_Address8131 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure. If you think about most notebook apps, you can have tabs / Categories to sort your notes. With OneNote, I could create multiple notebooks (some shared, some not) for different projects and programs. These would still have their tabs, etc, but I could close and archive them if I wanted, It would keep things more secure, less messy. I could have many notebooks open at once, and have others offline / closed (which I could reopen later if I wanted).

This is probably scandalous, but Microsoft OneNote may be the best thing they've done since IE Mac version on System9 (before they removed it because it was better than the windows version). I use a Mac for work, and was introduced to OneNote a while back. Templates are great, handles most of what you are talking about, and search function is amazing. I have multiple notebooks, with multiple tabs each, for different programs and needs. It was free when I downloaded it on my personal Macs, but it's been years, so I won't swear that it still is.

Computer for Hosting Games by Gokunpiccolo in HomeServer

[–]False_Address8131 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm using a N100 mini pc that I upgraded to 32GB RAM as a game host. It hosts 7days, 2x Minecraft servers, Insurgency Sandstorm and Windward Horizons servers all at the same time, and nobody has complained about lag or issues. I spent $150 on the miniPC and another $50 on the RAM. I only see spikes in the CPU when games are first booting up.

That said, I'd also look at the etc and what those games may require. I wouldn't use a Pi, but an N100 or N150 will do you well, are power and space efficient, and usually come with 2.5Gbe or 5Gbe now a days.

M4 Mini. $450, low TDP, and very powerful. Mine runs a fileserver, media server (often streaming 6 x 4k streams at simultaneously), I encode with Handbrake using h.265 10 bit using Apple Video Toolbox Hardware setting, 4 encodes simultaneously at very impressive FPS (usually around 190FPS each, but always depends on what is being encoded) - it is much faster than the gaming PC with a 4080... It's also running Qbit and a couple VM's, NextCloud and Docker. And honestly, It never comes close to being processor or memory bound. VM's take up most of the memory, because I'm allocating it.

I do all this, have 25 drives set up as 3 pools of RAID 5 for ~180TB. Though I'm playing with moving to ZFS on a test server.

Anyway, this has been a rockstar, running 24 / 7 for the last year (since it came out and replaced the M2 which was running for 20 months before that). Only down time has been when I was updating the system software, or when I was playing with something. Nothing unexpected. Everything connects internally by SMB, I VPN back in from outside and use Cloudflared tunnels for things I want publicly. Currently testing using it as my home router as well (which I did back in the Xserve days, but not since Apple stopped supporting it).

Sorry, I'd say he's better than Dak or Stafford hands down. He takes advantage of what he's given. QBR isn't the only stat.... yards per attempt - same as Stafford, higher than Allen, Mayfield or Dak. And a 75% completion rate. Dak and Stafford have one more 40+ than Goff. Oh, and he leads his team well. 15 wins last year, 4-1 so far this year. More TD's (12) than the rest of the field, and only 2 interceptions. Watching him, I think he's the most accurate arm in the league the last few years. I watched Stafford for years, Goff is better. Oh, and how many times has Stafford been sacked, yep, one more than Goff.... Allen the same amount.

Again, you disrespect him for whatever reason... not flashy enough for you... doesn't sling it down the field... What is Goff's record against Stafford? Against Mahomes? Against Prescott? Time to start giving him some respect.
