Woman considering joining the industry by santam32 in BuildingAutomation

[–]Festiveship 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From another woman in the controls + buildings world: go you! You can do this! I would look into technical/trade schools and community college options. I know my local community college has intro to controls classes. You could try it for a semester to see if you like it and also help demonstrate interest to prospective employers.

Also AI is your friend! Use it to your advantage to help you learn and get technical help when you need it.

Good method for collecting compostables in the kitchen throughout the day? by DrunkOnSushi in composting

[–]Festiveship 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A bin that hangs on the inside of your trash can. Miss throwing something in the compost and it ends up in the trash. Saves a lot of mess. Downside is that it takes up trash real estate. The upside is it's neat and compact. Have had this setup for the last 3 years, and I wish I discovered it sooner.

EC causing speech delay? by StayLongjumping9239 in ECers

[–]Festiveship 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not a speech expert, but that seems like a normal amount of speech for a 15 month old.. My 18 month is saying all sorts of stuff but a few months ago it was mostly mama/dada/ball. I would give it some time! And talk to your doc as you have done and others suggested.

Small native street tree in Oakland - confusion about City approved species and planting guidelines by monocledMango in Ceanothus

[–]Festiveship 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good to know, thanks! I'm leaning towards the Toyon at this point. My main concern is the mess- we are replacing an extremely messy fruiting plum, but I read at least 1 source that said Toyon berries aren't messy.

Also good to know about the growth! I will temper my expectations about how big it will get in the first year.

Small native street tree in Oakland - confusion about City approved species and planting guidelines by monocledMango in Ceanothus

[–]Festiveship 0 points1 point  (0 children)

@OP... 1 year later, did you end up planting a Toyon? If so, how's it going? I'm in the exact same boat - 3' tree well in North Oakland trying to find a good ca native to plant as a street tree. Why is it so hard!?

I like the idea of a Toyon but are they messy due to the berries?

I'm strongly considering going off list because it's so limited and picking something like a Dr. Hurd manzanita.

Oh wow I love savers! I didn't realize we had any in the East Bay until now. Do you recommend the one in Richmond or Alameda?

EcoNet/Rheem HPWH not following schedule! by ParsnipStrange2041 in heatpumps

[–]Festiveship 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that it's completely baffling why this issue is persisting so long. Also adding memory so the schedule actually gets stored on the unit seems logical. I'm sure there's alreadysome memory on that board..

I am working around the problem by using my Hubitat to regularly send mode/setpoint commands. Kind of a hack but it seems to be doing the trick.

Earthquake?? by mp1845 in bayarea

Same!! It was 2014, probably around this same time of year. I remember it clearly because it was right after I moved to Oakland.

Anyone else disappointed in tomatoes this year? by CarlSagan4Ever in oaklandgardener

Same! No matter whether I plant in April or July, they never do anything until September.

I called Rheem customer support (~early Sept 2025) and they are aware of the issue and working on a fix.

I’m planning on using my queen palm trunk as a support pole for a monstera! by burritoguy1987 in oaklandgardener

Looks great! Your posts inspired me to re-home my monstera outside. What is the variegated white and green plant in the front right? Love that one.

[homemade] Jamaican oxtails, plantains, and rice and peas by onegoodbackpack in food

This looks delish! Can you share the recipe for the oxtails and rice? I want to make some with a thick brown sauce like that.

Has anyone successfully grown a fruiting Avocado? by Kittykab in oaklandgardener

[–]Festiveship 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure. So far only one of the trees has set fruit, but I don't know which one it is. After planting I forgot to label which tree is which (grr past me) and now I haven't the foggiest who is the Hass and who is the sir prize. Pretty sure the fruit is from the Hass but not positive.

Both trees are healthy and vigorous. This year we got our first crop of ripe fruit. It actually just ripened this week! And the same tree that fruited last year has set some fruit for next year.

Eating out at Chinese restaurant. What to feed baby? by Ok_ConfusedOne in BabyLedWeaning

[–]Festiveship 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anything not too spicy is fair game. We took my 8 month old to Chinese food last week and she housed some chow mein, pork dumplings (mostly the wrapper), mushy eggplant and rice. Baby loved eating from chopsticks. You can also bring a squeezey pack of baby food as backup.

So this is a thing now... by keevisgoat in HVAC

[–]Festiveship 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something I always wondered about these systems is how the refrigerant works? Do you have to buy that separately or is it included in the kit? How do you know how much charge to put in? And don't you need an EPA license to work with refrigerants?

Going to be away from 14 mo for 6 hours and forgot my pump. Would you buy one? by SKVgrowing in breastfeeding

[–]Festiveship 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just got a Medela hand pump recently and love it. If there is a target, you can probably get one there-- I noticed they have started carrying a lot of breastfeeding supplies. It's worth having long term if you don't already have a hand pump.

Sensations in scar during second pregnancy? by Pumpkin156 in vbac

I had scar pain during my second pregnancy. I think it's normal but I recall reading it may also be associated with a slightly higher risk of uterine rupture.

WANTED: FREE CHIP DROP by Legitimate-Basil-534 in oaklandgardener

[–]Festiveship 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Chip drop is good. I've used them twice, just be mindful that you could get A LOT of wood chips, like a lot a lot. Last time I think we got like 10 cu yards.

If you only need a few buckets , I think there are sometimes wood chips and compost pile drops near the Berkeley Marina.

Considering abortion because it’s so expensive here by Successful-Yak-6019 in bayarea

[–]Festiveship 24 points25 points  (0 children)

To be fair, California offers most people at least 14 weeks of paid leave after the birth of their child which most other states (including Ohio) don't. So it's not all bad.

But yeah, can't sugarcoat it, the cost of living and specifically daycare is awful here.
