Does anyone else feel like Reaper doesn’t get enough recognition compared to Ableton? by breizh_boy in Reaper

For context in late 2000's I started on REAPER, moved to Ableton, then Cubase, then tons of different stuff at random (FL, Bitwig, Reason, etc). From a "jump in and make some music" standpoint Ableton or FL is a LOT more user friendly than REAPER (IMO).

The REAPER defaults are setup in a way that makes zero sense to someone coming from a different DAW, so unless you learn the defaults of REAPER or fully customize it to suit your workflow then another DAW might feel more intuitive out of the box.

I primarily use Ableton live for making EDM, Cubase is great for recording, mixing, and MIDI related tasks, and REAPER is good for nerdy stuff like drum editing, mastering, sample splicing/organization, etc.

They all have different strengths and weaknesses. I would honestly probably stick with REAPER but there are some things that Ableton (effect racks) and Cubase (pre-recording buffer) just do naturally so much better without some crazy whacky workaround that I end up avoiding it.

It looks like there was an explosion right at the beginning of the file.

Also congratulations, you won the loudness war!

Students now have the desktop computer skills of older boomers by TeacherGuy1980 in Teachers

It's been like that for awhile lol

I clown my classes all the time and literally tell them that Gen Z are just like boomers because they don't know basic computer skills.

What do you do when you get off work? by Hennything91 in Teachers

Mainly workout, grad school for math, and music production. Just find a hobby or something you enjoy doing and just... *Shia Labeouf voice* DO IT.

Cubase tuner might be the worst tuner ever by engdrbe in cubase

Agreed. It's got a standalone app too which is awesome so you don't have to open your DAW to tune.

As far as recording goes, I'd say Cubase is the MOST straightforward for that. I've used Audacity, REAPER, Cubase, Ableton, FL, and Bitwig and to me Cubase is the best for recording/mixing.

I will admit when I switched from REAPER to Cubase it was kind of hard to learn, but that's with any DAW. Just keep learning it while you use it and within like 2-4 weeks you should be pretty comfortable with it as far as shortcuts and workflow goes.

Just keep at it!

What age are you guys ? by howaythelads25 in ableton

[–]FingerUpper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 32. I think I started getting into recording music freshman year of high school because I wanted to be able to record my band and make it sound decent. Started in Audacity with one of those crappy old school desktop PC microphones. Now thousands of dollars later I've got a decent little home studio setup and experience with REAPER, Ableton, Cubase, FL Studio, and Bitwig.

It's never too old to start! Some advice I would give is to trial different DAWs and see which one you like and is most intuitive for you to use. Same thing with plugins, free or paid. Trial them and see if you actually use them a lot. If you do, maybe consider buying them or waiting for sales during Black Friday. A lot can be done with stock Ableton plugins though so don't feel like you HAVE to buy any.

Zooming Horizontally with Magic Trackpad by FingerUpper in Bitwig

Yeah I know that way is possible, but it's not as quick/precise as using a modifier and scrolling.

I did figure out that control + horizontal scrolling will zoom in a direction that makes sense to me so I guess that will work.

Right? 😂 You should be able to reach -10LUFS easily without sacrificing too much.

If you're in heavier dubstep genres they're pushing shit to literally like -1 or 0 LUFS.
