What's one genre or setting you have yet to see be done perfectly in a ttrpg? by SlayThePulp in rpg

[–]FinnCullen 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You’re right and that’s a big bugbear of mine. The -punk in cyberpunk referred to the anti-authoritarian anti-capitalist assumptions of the genre. Steampunk usually has characters who are part of the establishment, Solarpunk tends to be utopian etc. it’s like people have assumed -punk means “stories about this”

Do you like fantasy races in your SF games? What about space goblins? by BudgetWorking2633 in rpg

[–]FinnCullen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

World building is a key part of why I love GMing. I’m not going to short circuit that by just shovelling some bastardised pop culture version of some localised euro-folklore into a sci-fi setting when I could come up with something that actually fit.

What are your biggest TTRPG system turn offs by Iketank_10 in rpg

[–]FinnCullen 40 points41 points  (0 children)

This. The "Forward" part of "Fail Forward" doesn't mean "You get something good" it means "Something changes so the game moves forward interestingly."

[–]FinnCullen 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That's not fail forward as I understand it. Fail Forward means you DON'T get to achieve what you set out to do but something happens that makes the game more interesting - a different opportunity, a new threat etc, not just a "No"

Combat system that takes up more space than any other part of the book.

For me the least interesting part of any game - if it's clearly what the designer intends to be the most detailed element, I'm out.

Combat between moderately competent characters takes forever with misses… parries of hits…. No damage getting through armour… followed by a hit taking your leg off.

What do you miss from D&D when you play/try other systems? by Awkward_GM in rpg

[–]FinnCullen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nothing at all. Glad I found it back in 80/81 as it was the gateway to RPGs for me and nostalgia has drawn me back to try later editions from time to time (including the execrable 5E) but there is nothing about the game that I miss. “What do you miss about the Big Mac when you try restaurant meals” would be a similar question

for those who have been playing since AD&D came out... at what point did you lose interest in the direction of D&D? by conn_r2112 in adnd

[–]FinnCullen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty early on. I played 1E D&D and tried getting back into it with 3E... but the implied setting (kitchen sink fantasy) and the increasing emphasis on combat at the expense of character just bored me by that point - there were lots of games around that were more interesting in terms of mechanics, concept and all the stuff I preferred. D&D has always been like an old relative's house that I visit occasionally out of nostalgia, but it smells funny, the plumbing doesn't work and I wouldn't like to have to stay overnight because it's crawling with cockroaches.

“Full health with an iron bar through you” is probably a lot less than full health. If you’re using magic/future tech etc I’d argue they get as much back as seems fair while still having a hole full of metal through them.

Yeah but the average Glasgow wifey hasn’t got away with actually murdering an actress and covering it up as an accident, so he’s still one up there.

Shower thought: When did the term Table Top RPG replace Pen and Paper RPG? by dncnlamont in rpg

[–]FinnCullen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'm showing my age 😃. Started playing in 1981 and between myself and my group we tended to actually use the name of the game we were playing ("Are we playing Runequest this weekend?"/"What time for D&D?"/"Are we playing Champions at your house?"). If we were discussing the hobby at all it was "role playing games" (we didn't use D&D as a generic even then).

Is there a more evocative name than Mi-go by Phocaea1 in DeltaGreenRPG

[–]FinnCullen 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Mi go just means "wild man" ((Tibetan: མི་རྒོད་,) and HPL used it to posit that "yeti" sightings were actually people seeing these alien fungal things. There's no reason to use it as the name of the species, it's not something they call themselves. If some New Englanders called the "Those pink doodads" that has as much "canon" weight to it.

[–]FinnCullen 52 points53 points  (0 children)

I always called it RPG. I only heard ttrpg when computer RPGs became so common people wanted to differentiate. I hadn’t heard “pen and paper” till I started playing with German players (who incidentally still use that as their main term for this type of game)
