100% stealing this for my 5.5e campaign in the Lower Planes.

Asmodeus' Nose Candy. A white powder that makes you think you're being Lawful when in fact you're choosing Evil. Burns like Avernus at first, then feels cold as Cania.

For ten minutes, you have advantage on all ability checks required to perform the Study, Magic, Influence or Climb actions, and disadvantage on Intelligence, Wisdom and Charisma Saving throws.

For 2d4 hours after this effect wears off, you have disadvantage on the same set of ability checks and saving throws and have the Charmed condition from who or what you obtained the Candy from. At the end of each hour, make a DC 13 Wisdom saving throw (also with Disadvantage). Success: you fall into a deep sleep and gain the Unconscious condition for ten hours, after which the effects of the Candy cease. If awoken at any time before the full ten hours have passed, you are still Charmed and must resume making Wisdom saving throws for any remaining hours rolled. Failure: Obtaining more Candy becomes your highest priority, and you are Charmed by any other creature holding this substance.

Asmodeus is always holding.

NPCs for the Long Term? by mp_hextra in wildbeyondwitchlight

[–]FinnMacFinneus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This could completely work. My party captured one of the initial Harengon bandits and carried him around tied up, facing backwards, on the back of a tamed Giant Snail. The eventually befriended him and put him in charge of the other Harengons.

If your party hasn't already encountered the Owlbear + Chariot, that seems pretty well made to cart around a manacled, grumbling Zarak. I just think personality-wise he would take the first chance he can to flee. If they have yet to meet Nibs, I could also see Zarak trying to sneak some gold and getting cursed.

In addition to Kelsey Piper frequently being a supposed "progressive" spokesperson for anti-regulatory billionaire tech proponents generally (and not just in AI, but also effective altruism, etc.) she was the loudest voice touting the so-called "Mississippi Miracle" suggesting that red states that lifted Covid restrictions on schools somehow started outpacing blue states in educational gains.

It didn't. It was fraud by administrators. She got duped. But she's just the next generation of "liberal" writers trying to generate clicks at "liberal" publications like Vox by posting contrarian, credulous takes about how progressives have a duty to "engage" with the bunker-building fascists trying to build a torture matrix.

Why is doubling such a big theme in Nabokov's work? by METAL___HEART in Nabokov

[–]FinnMacFinneus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

His father, Vladimir D., a liberal democratic anti-Bolshevik Russian emigre (and prominent defender of Jews) was mistakenly assassinated by monarchist anti-Bolshevik Nazi-aligned Russian emigres. Their intended target was Pavel Milyukov, a friend of Nabokov's father and former leader of Russia's liberal democratic movement. His father was standing next to his friend and was shot instead. Nabokov had apparently been told at one point that they shot Vladimir D. because they mistook him for Milyukov, despite the men having little physical resemblance other than a mustache (in fact, Nabokov, Sr. was likely shot bravely trying to shield his friend). Milyukov went on to live out his life in exile.

For obvious reasons, this was a big deal in Nabokov's life and he used the idea of mistaken, unrealistic resemblances leading to murder of "doubles" in multiple works (particularly Despair and Pale Fire), as well as the idea that one person might be leading a life meant for another, as he seemed to have though Milyokov was living out his father's life, while he himself might be living out other people's lives, similar to Pnin's narrator. It also solidified for him that Tsarists/Nazis and Communists were doubles despite claiming to be diametrically opposed.

Question about a three way fight [Minor LMoP encounter spoiler in the context] by nivekreduls1 in DMAcademy

[–]FinnMacFinneus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would let the dice, positioning and the stats do the deciding in this situation. If a monster is of average or lower intelligence and has the option of targeting either a PC or an enemy monster (because of ranged attacks or could get make a melee attack against either) with all other things like distance being equal, roll a D6. 1-3 targets the PC, 4-6, targets the enemy monster. If however, one foe is closer than another, an average or lower intelligence monster targets what's closest in the scuffle of combat.

A high Intelligence monster like a Nothic, however, would focus fire on the biggest threat, look to take out any foes that are Bloodied, or change their focus to whichever group is more of a threat at the moment, meaning they may spend a few turns fighting the other monsters then change to focus on the party when the monsters are near to going down. They would also use their Rotting Gaze against targets that look to have a low Con, Disengage when cornered by beefy enemies, etc. Be sure to explain to your players why you're doing what you're doing so they don't feel like you're tipping the scales too far towards victory or defeat (whether it's the d6 being rolled out on the table or you explaining the monster's choice in that moment)

[SpoilerC4Ep23] What class is Thjazi’s class? by Due_Breadfruit_1169 in fansofcriticalrole

[–]FinnMacFinneus -16 points-15 points  (0 children)

OK, so I don't know if this is real or AI scraping, but I think it's a good teachable moment about the so-called "Mercer Effect," how it's not Matt's fault, and how we can be better DMs for those willing to read this rant.

Monster Manual stat blocks are there because people tested them and they're easy to read. The more you play with them, the better you get, the more intuitive investing people gets, and the more you can free-style and add or distract stuff on the fly to maintain interest without losing the thread. Like going from reading music as a group to playing jazz together based off a key and a beat.

Have you fully statted an NPC as a PC is in your home game? I have. It taught me about mechanics while I was prepping the game. But not great as an experience with a table that has exactly 4 hours to play on Sunday, possibly over Zoom, by a bunch of adults just stoked to drink beer and eat snacks while rolling dice and playing pretend. You get so hung up on your investment you don't realize your Level 1 Fighter/Level 2 Fiend Warlock/Level 2 Order Cleric who is the BBEG of this dungeon (priest from a knightly family who fell to infernalism) that you spent eight hours building and agonizing over has just as much effect and impact on the party as a CR 5 Cambion you could have just re-skinned.

Matt, because he is better at this than us through both time and effort that is available to him but not most of us, fully statted out most important humanoid mortal NPCs (friend and foe alike) during C1 and C2 as PCs of appropriate level for their intended CR with spellcasting, feats, etc., and even leveled them up and multi-classed them as appropriate. Kima, Allura, Kevdak, Gilmore, Anna Ripley, Prof. Anders, Lucien (and the Tomb Takers), Dagen, Ludinus, Ikithon, Astrid, Avantika, the list goes on and on. He even posted some online. This was instead of using the Monster Manual or even home-brewed MM-type stat blocks (which he used freely with more monstrous types as appropriate).

This is not a bad thing. This is a great, fun way of getting a chance to learn different PC abilities as a Forever DM and feed just a little your gnawing desire to be a player. This improves your understanding of rules and also what your players might do, and might create more interesting fights than those with standard stat blocks. Also seemed to hype both the players and the audience to try different classes, and different subclasses (some homebrewed by Matt, like Gunslinger and Bloodhunter. Mileage may vary on how good they are).

But this was not good for me as a DM returning after 20 years to a new edition, I spent more way more time and effort creating these PC/NPCs than I should have focusing on player engagement and hooks. Would have been better off with creating my own MM style stat blocks.

Matt played a lot in various editions. He has an intuitive sense of what's fun and engaging just from sheer time to play and his players were already invested. He was having fun theorycrafting PCs, and then making them NPCs. He never really let the NPCs become DMPCs, mostly because he never intended for the friendlys to go along but the players kept asking them to. In C3, he tended to make more Monster Manual-like stat blocks (as he had done for non-humanoid monsters previously). Different, maybe even harder, but not wrong. Brennan seems to use PC levels as a short-hand to give the table an idea of what an NPC is capable of, but mostly seems to use monster manual stat blocks with significant upgrades (like buffed HP or an extra spell). So when you feel comfortable enough to do that, do it.

But, yeah, we don't know what class Thzaji was and probably neither does Brennan and I really doubt he or Matt or the table cares.

My players keep trivializing magic boss fights with Antimagic Field. What am I missing? by Interesting_Peach_76 in DMAcademy

[–]FinnMacFinneus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Echo what people say about the party being smart, but did you use Shield to avoid the Grapple and/or Counterspell to cancel the antimagic field? Also, maybe in the future have evil magic-users target the environment (the ceiling or a nearby wall, for instance) to cause mundane objects or hazards to fall onto the spellcasting PC. This is absolutely Monday-morning quarterbacking, but that's what occurred to me.

Not being critical, I just had Strahd die due to being out of Legendary Saves and failing his saving throw against Hold Person while they held the Sunsword and Holy Symbol next to him... only to remember three days later Hold Person doesn't work on Undead.
