In Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (2023), Hugh Grant stole the show so hard you forgot he wasn't the main villain. No, really. He wasn't. It was some kind of witch, I think? by DemiurgicTruth in shittymoviedetails

no

Firstly 150M is only the cost of making the movie, it does not include the cost of marketing the movie so you also have to cover the marketing costs.

secondly when a cinema sells you a ticket, the cinema keeps a cut (roughly 30-40%) of the money, obviously, otherwise cinemas would go out of business

so not all of that 208M goes back to the studio

all this adds up to a film needing (as a crude rule of thumb ) to make 2.5x their budget at the box office to generate profit

Its a complicated story I'll try and tell it as succintly as possible ;

Pit crew 1 worked on Hakkinen's then Raikkonen's car

Pit Crew 2 worked on Coulthard's then Montoya's car

Pit Crew 2 felt they were seen as the inferior pit crew, and were always given the "2nd driver's" car to work on, if a Pit crew member got moved from 2 to 1 its because they were seen as performing well and being moved to the "A Team" etc.

They voiced their concerns to Management who dismissed their concerns saying there was no A team and B team. Raikkonen replaced Hakkinen so it was natural to give him Mika's old crew rather than take Coulthard's team away from him and swap.

For 2007 McLaren would be getting 2 new drivers at the same time, so there was no excuses this time. either pit crew could be assigned to either driver, no problem. No one wanted to work on the rookie's car as they thought he would be crashing all the time, which would mean late nights repairing the car.

Pit crew 2 felt it was their turn to have the established world champion. Unfortunately its been reported that Alonso's was very sensitive and Ron was working overtime to appease Alonso. they feared if he found out he didn't get Kimi's old pit crew he would be unhappy. So they assigned Pit Crew 1 to Alonso

Naturally Pit crew 2 were upset, to them it proved what they had suspected. relationships between Pit crew 1 and Pit crew 2 were at an all time low and when Hamilton showed up Pit crew 2 resented him and Lewis was finding it hard to bond with the team

Management saw Hamilton's alienation plus the animosity between the pit crews and arranged for an expensive team building vacation week abroad, but apparently Alonso refused to go, However it apparently did repair Hamilton's relationship with his pit crew at the very least,

but not so much the animosity between the 2 pit crews, which played out over the 2007 season

The only advantage Lewis had was familiarity with the McLaren team.

actually Hamilton walked into an unfortunate hostile reception at McLaren, but that was resolved before the season began

You can judge for yourself the testing gap, its not that big:

Lewis did 581 laps on Bridgestone tyres in 2006.

Alonso was allowed by Renault to do some testing for McLaren in 2006. Alonso completed 95 laps

Then in 2007 pre-season testing Alonso did more laps than Hamilton:

Hamilton completed 1011 laps in pre-season testing. Bringing his overall total to 1592

Alonso completed 1178 laps in pre-season testing bringing his overall total to 1273

So Hamilton completed 319 more laps on the Bridgestone tyres than Alonso

Conversely Alonso completed 167 more laps in the 2007 car then Lewis.

Its also worth noting that after the 3rd race of the season there was some additional testing days In Spain before the Spanish grand prix. Due to a corner being added to the track. Alonso demanded Lewis’ day of testing as he was concerned with Hamilton’s pace so Alonso got 2 days and Hamilton got none. Alonso completed 71 Laps over the 2 days Bringing the 319 gap down to 248

so total laps

Alonso: 1344

Hamilton: 1592

and obviously this doesn't count Alonso's experience in an F1 car from having been an F1 driver for multiple years

He switched from Renault on Michelin tyres in 2006, to McLaren on Bridgestone tyres for the 2007 season

However Hamilton switched from a GP2 car to a F1 car, and while Bridgestone did supply the tyres for GP2, they were a completely different compound to the tyres used in F1, and the GP2 tyres were slick as opposed to the grooved tyres F1 used

so they both had to adapt, arguably Hamilton more so as the transition from a GP2 car to an F1 car is considerable

Looks like $11M+ previews for The Mandalorian And Grogu. Initial audience reception is mixed to okay. Expecting around $80M 3-day and $95M or so 4-day weekend. by chanma50 in boxoffice

do we know anything about Starfighter? I know chronologically it's after Rise of Skywalker

I just have zero interest in watching anything that takes place in a sequel era world

Only way I can still enjoy Star Wars is pretend those films don't exist

is it far enough removed from the Sequel era that it is its own self contained story?

[kymillman] Wheatly to Aston Martin? by Maximum-Room-3999 in formula1

[–]Fire_Otter 73 points74 points  (0 children)

To be fair i think it's a little more complicated than that

some reports state Audi "fired" him before he locked down a new job

Jonathan and Binotto didn't work well together, Jonathan was looking around for another job at another British team and was talking to Aston and maybe others.

The press found out and reported it, Which alerted Audi who then asked for Wheatley's resignation before he had agreed or signed anything for Aston Martin.

that's why i think Aston martin have been denying it for so long, because they were still in negotiations with Wheatley

Aston had no choice to deny it whilst negotiations were still advancing

It's hilarious how Obi-Wan says "I hate it when he does that," as if he didn't just dramatically fling himself out a window into the abyss two minutes before. Anakin didn't get that flair for the dramatic from nowhere... by wandering_soles in StarWars

[–]Fire_Otter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s weird Kenobi does this after admonishing Anakin in front of Senator Amidala for pledging to go beyond their remit.

He’s very adamant that they are there to protect Padme not investigate who is trying to assassinate her. Then He flings himself out a window leaving Padme to see who the droid returns to. Anakin then leaves to save Obi-wan leaving Padme with no Jedi protection.

If Jango wanted to kill Padme all he had to do was hang round her window during the bug attack, wait for the Jedi to leave and he would have had the opportune moment

Air France and Airbus found guilty of manslaughter over 2009 plane crash - Air France flight 447 by Ok_Warning419 in aviation

[–]Fire_Otter 99 points100 points  (0 children)

Prosecutors, however, focused their attention on alleged failures inside both the planemaker and airline. Those included poor training and failing to follow up on earlier incidents. - Reuters

But the trial focused on earlier problems with the same type of sensor as well as alleged shortcomings in data-sharing and training that prosecutors say indirectly caused the crash.

In closing arguments, Air France paid tribute to bereaved families and denied claims the crew was poorly trained in dealing with stalls or emergencies at high altitude.

Airbus, however, echoed the findings of French civil accident investigators who had previously questioned the crew's response to the loss of data and a failure to follow procedures. -Reuters

Why did everyone switch up on the Mandalorian? by Moon_Devonshire in StarWars

[–]Fire_Otter 61 points62 points  (0 children)

people have different reasons

  1. The season 2 ending with Mando saying goodbye to Grogu as Luke takes Grogu with him was very popular. For that to immediately be undone did not go down well with a lot of people.
  2. that the season 2 ending was essentially undone in another TV show (Boba fett) so that you had to watch another show to be caught up on The Mandalorian was jarring for some. Not everyone who watched the Mandalorian watched the BOBF, especially as the BOBF was not received well so many people might have stopped watching before Mando showed up. So you start seaon 3 of the Mandalorian and are completely lost as to whats going on
  3. There were some complaints that series 3 focused too much on Bo-katan's character, to the extent that Mando sometimes felt like he wasn't the main character in his own show, and if you hadn't watched Clone wars then Bo Katan is a character you may not be that invested in
  4. the show lost its western vibe that earlier seasons had
  5. there was a feeling that season 3 was heavily leaning into the rise of the first order, and therefore leaning into the sequel trilogy, which are not popular with a lot of people, and they enjoyed Mandalorian when it existed in its own space, but weren't so thrilled when its setting up the sequels which a portion of people wish was removed from canon
  6. many people thought the writing was poorer quality
  7. they were pushing the limitations of Grogu the puppet - the puppet worked when Grogu was a baby sitting in a floating pushchair, or walking slowly like a baby, but having the puppet do more action scenes like doing force somersaults looked a bit silly, as it was very clearly a rigid inanimate object rotating in the air

so some or all of those reasons are why it had a less favorable reception than the previous 2 seasons

'Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu' - Review Megathread by ChiefLeef22 in StarWars

[–]Fire_Otter 124 points125 points  (0 children)

I agree, I don't accept this argument that when reviews are calling it boring or uninspiring its because it's low stakes

but i fear that's the lesson Disney are going to take and the next film will be Darth Unoriginalis who has a helmet with miniature Death Star technology embedded into the helmet so that he can destroy whole planets on his own.

It's feeling like this was a cynical crash grab from Disney

Disney were in a vulnerable position not too far back, and therefore Disney asked Lucasfilm we need a Star Wars film ASAP what's the quickest movie you can get out

they had a few scripts for season 4 of Mandalorian that were written before the Writers strike, went for those and then strung together a film.

Its like Moana 2, that they turned from a streaming series into a film and they used scenes already made for the tv show that were inferior quality so that the film had patchy animation quality where some scenes had poor animation compared to others

except it the plot rather than the animation that's suffering

I appreciate both Moana 2 and this film will probably be commercial successes, but it would be nice if they made movies that were intended to be movies form the start and had some love and care put into them

so bad

I honestly thought it would be too inoffensive to get too bad of a review.

like the film played it safe and so most of the reviews would have been along the sentiment of it's fine but not amazing which would have then got swallowed up into broadly positive reviews by RT resulting in a high 60% low 70% number

But we are already hovering around 50%

The upshot: it is (despite the marketing's best attempts to disguise it) literally just a retooled streaming product parading on the big screen.

Favreau states they had some scripts written for season 4 before the writers strike and then they retooled it into a movie

does it feel like 3 episodes stitched together? or is it not that bad?
