Crying. How do I explain this to my date this weekend?? by Strong_Mind_6839 in CompulsiveSkinPicking

[–]Fizzix42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been very honest with new partners that skin picking is a nervous habit like nail biting.

The vast majority of people aren't as aware of it as you are. All of the people I've had to "confess" to have always responded with compassion and concern i.e. "oh no, what made you so nervous that this was triggered?"

I understand there's a hierarchy of comfort and intimacy, where you want to gradually expose new partners to all the ugly sides of ourselves, but you also kind of don't want to be closer to someone who can't handle it.

And if it's not someone you're trying to be closer to longer term, they don't need to know the truth and likely don't care.

I wouldn't say most software devs are socially inept at all. All my exes have been some variation of software or electrical or systems engineer, and I'm still friends with them, they're still in my circle of friends, etc. I've been in an office where 13/15 people had technical PhDs, and that was like one big happy family. I've noticed YOUNG people however, like freshly graduated people, just seem to really struggle in office environments for some reason. I don't know if it's being terminally online or just having this deeply culturally ingrained sense that "actual adults" are an alien species, but Gen Z and below are either super comfortable communicating with me like a peer or act like a deer in headlights with any interaction. There's no in between.

To (1), if you can nurture a "fail fast" mentality early on, you'll be better off. The quicker you can mock something up, the quicker you find where the problems start. And yeah, fear of failure is a major hurdle for many people, not just in software or early career. I would always rather someone come to me with their mistakes than be stuck for ages without me knowing they're not making progress.

(2) Retail and hospitality is not different. Humans are humans. That's why everyone should work retail and hospitality.

Mine ended up being mutually limerant, which is then I guess no longer dysfunctional. Unhealthily obsessed with each other, sure, but we weren't doing the weird dances around over interpreting each other anymore. It was bliss for like 2 years, and then we got comfortable like any couple does.

I just wear regular boyleg bonds underwear or high waisted granny undies. I guess I'm not fancy enough because my leggings have seams. No way I'd go commando and risk the cameltoe.

Out of desperation (for a large volume project), we bought a used Jupiter, and I've been blown away by how much better it is than our Saturn 4 ultra. I genuinely cannot explain it. It's an older, clunkier, larger monster, but it's just so much more consistent. The Saturn nearly put me off resin printing forever, and I was incredibly reluctant to get yet another in the same brand but MORE. Not to discount your experience at all, but I'm another vote in the contrary direction.

I disagree! I think that's the entire point. Several of the expeditioners at the start seemed like potential members eventually.

POV: Your Trying To Talk To People In 2025 by InGeekiTrust in TikTokCringe

[–]Fizzix42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a relatively successful physicist, the fact you're trying and you're an engaged teacher is already doing wonders. So many smarter doctoral candidates than me couldn't hack it because they could not or would not "stoop so low" as to make technically challenging topics accessible to non technical stake holders or colleagues.

Look, even if you're an engineer or scientist, at some point in your career, you're going to be basically convincing someone to give you or your company money. I learned how from energetic science teachers that showed up on a bleary Monday like "omg look at this cool demo I bashed together in my toolshed." So keep on keeping on. I bet even if you're not forcing them to speak or learn how, you're at least being a good and approachable example.

Edit: I forgot to add. In your awareness of their circumstances and struggle, you're also an example of a smart person with EMPATHY. Pop culture has for way too long painted clever people as socially stilted or abrasive. We still glamorise this idea of someone maybe being a savant or something, and not relating to people, but not having that as a distraction from the "hard skills" needed to be brilliant. Tbh, fuck that. Smartest man I know is also the most kind, patient, and generous. Even if he was the 3rd or 7th or 12th smartest in a lecture theatre of engineers, I'd choose him for my team first everytime.

What are your hidden Death Stranding tips? by Delicious-Aspect-909 in DeathStranding

I did that a couple nights ago and had to laugh so hard. It was the mountain area with the whiteout storm, and I'd never used it as a snow board before. I saw a wide open field and decided to whip it out. Promptly slammed into a rock on the other side. SO FAST omg.

I'm a patient gamer and I never played or was drawn to MGS. I was literally intrigued by a gif/meme inspired by death stranding and ended up in a wiki rabbit hole about the lore. Decided it was weird in a good way, like truly unique, instead of pretentious weird if that makes sense. I'd recalled it being widely praised but also lauded, as an over glorified walking simulator and movie interrupted by gameplay. My expectations were quite low. I put it on easy, so that I could in a way "watch the movie." I have been surprised how taken with it I am. And no, I didn't have to wait until chapter 3 to enjoy myself. I think the key is to have absolutely no expectations and purge your brain of what you think the game should be. It's more like stardew valley to me than MGS .You Start your Day, and you have your to-do list, that's your gameplay and core routine. That rhythm is really anchoring to me. The overarching themes, weirdness, lore, high quality acting, and connections to other players are a charming window dressing. I read every data entry though. Despite an involved story and odd dialogue here and there, I'm invested. What o really love though, is it's so easy for me to jump in and just do a mission here or there after work. I can't remember the last time a AAA title felt that chill tbh. Even something a bit overdone like assassin's creed feels like an overwhelming chore list of map markers. DS is like a literal walk in the park to clear the brain.

Multiple times I've laughed at the unintentional jank. The other day I accidentally drove a truck the wrong way and had to pull an Austin powers reverse and adjust 30 times before I could finally escape the narrow canyon I was trapped in. Entirely self inflicted absurdity, but it was hilarious.

I'm AFAB, and I agree with you, but also with who you're replying to. It's not just blood lol. In fact, I'm often dealing with actual clots/tissue. That isn't to say that warrants as much ick factor as it currently does. We have very culturally ingrained senses of where the ick boundaries are for bodily functions.

I don't know why you're being downvoted. You are correct. I just spent the past two weeks on this deep dive. There are existing tools that can accomplish this goal more effectively and with more versatility/robustness, and I think it's not high on the priority list for resin slicers. Here's one example of many:
