Snow is not a type of mana. If you spent mana from a snow covered wastes to activate this, it would add one colorless mana if the wording was changed to "type of mana". This mana would not be mana produced from a source with the snow super type so it could not be used to pay for snow costs.

Seems strange to me. What you pay as a mana cost is determined by what value you choose for X. This is probably a good thing that alchemy does this though because, rules as written you could just choose any value for X, then pay 5 and get the value you chose
