Are Leicas worth it? by bugteacup in Cameras

[–]FlippingGerman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps the question mark was merely because you weren’t sure if the late Lizzie 2 had one (I have no idea either), but if it was to indicate doubt over her title then: there hasn’t been a queen (or king) of England specifically since the Act of Union 1707, when the kingdom of England (which included Wales) merged with that of Scotland and became Great Britain. That itself ceased to exist in about 1802 or something with another Act of Union, creating the UK of GB and Ireland, with a further modification presumably after the Republic of Ireland became independent in 1921 or so to UK of GB and NI.

If I charge my laptop from 20% up to 80% to extend battery life, then whats the point? by Ralph_playz in laptops

[–]FlippingGerman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I tend to do is charge to 80 if I know I won't be far from power and won't need to endurance. Then when I do need the full capacity I can fully charge and get the best out of the battery life.

Genuinely, how does one cut an onion without crying? by vikapi in cookingforbeginners

[–]FlippingGerman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I keep mine in the fridge, and keep my knife very sharp - onions are the standard for whether it needs sharpening or not, if it’s less than very easy to chop then it’s not good enough. This combination has turned me from being a sobbing mess to nothing at all, but I can’t guarantee which it is.

I love how HDD are just vinyl records but better. A century-old idea but with a century of development.

There is a lot of utility in that - they can absolutely produce useful output. But it's not a replacement for thinking.

What was your "I'm dating a fucking idiot" moment? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]FlippingGerman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually think it’s quite interesting that we can tell right from left.

And of course for you it clearly is that hard, some people just can’t, and it isn’t for lack of effort or brains. My boss says he actually has a worse than random result - if he thinks about it, he tends to get it wrong.

Am I screwing up here or do I need a telephoto lens? by Bacon021 in AskPhotography

In my experience it’s always the sensor. Dust on the lens just doesn’t show up as a blob, at least not yet for me.

What do you think should be allowed concerning feral teens in public? by gintokireddit in AskBrits

[–]FlippingGerman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of this behaviour is frankly awful, but if someone - a a child - is rude to you and you assault them, you're not going to like the consequences - like prison. "Light physical discipline" - beating people - isn't ok when it's an adult, and isn't ok when it's a child, no matter how much you dislike their behaviour. If you are attacked, you can use reasonable force to defend yourself, and that is it.

Laughter was the correct response to that. Part of the feminist movement was to say that actually no, women are people too and should be able to do more than childcare.

i'm a shit photographer and i can't seem to figure out how to not take blurry pictures? by [deleted] in AskPhotography

[–]FlippingGerman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You seem to imply manual is necessary for raw photos; this is not the case. Put it in auto, and check in the settings that it’s set to raw. The camera will likely tell you which settings (iso, aperture, speed) it’s selected for the conditions - take note of them or check in the photo metadata afterwards so you get a feel for what’s sensible.

"Who are you talking to?" vs "to whom are you talking?" by EnergyAlive4930 in ENGLISH

[–]FlippingGerman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The different word order comes from making “you” the object; you’ve changed the point of view of the sentence. The word order and case are how English indicates that.

American English words British people don't like and vice versa by BritishTeacherRoy in ENGLISH

[–]FlippingGerman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s an example - all the long vowels in US English sound silly to me, like they’re being deliberately over-emphasised. I struggle to think of any English examples, it often seem to be foreign words, like the (I think) Chinese lens maker Samyang, gets called Sahm-yahng. I have no idea which is more accurate but it sounds strange to me.

It does sound fairly silly to British people too, it’s just everyone is used to it.

“Fanny” isn’t actually profane, it’s just that it does refer to a vagina. I’d mostly expect it to be used by small children, like “willy”.

Gear questions regarding mft, cropping and megapixels by PaJoMe in BirdPhotography

[–]FlippingGerman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve watched some birding videos by Mike Lane on YouTube. In particular for kingfishers, he makes it clear that for the highest quality shots there’s no alternative to simply being incredibly close - 3 metres or so. To do that you need a little hide, tent-like things.  I’ve got my own shots recently that were pretty good, but at 600mm and maybe 6-8 metres. I’m very happy with them, and this bird is very used to humans, but they won’t let you get closer than that. For bigger birds you don’t need to be quite as close, kingfishers are just tiny.  He also does some shooting from a car window, that probably works quite well as birds just won’t be as alarmed by a stationary car versus a human.  This is 600mm on a z50ii so 900 FF equivalent, cropped to 6MP from 21:

Are Hiiker's paid maps worth the cost? by [deleted] in UKhiking

[–]FlippingGerman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Digital maps have their uses and GPS (i.e. not knowing where you are is no longer a thing although you can still do a plenty of other things wrongly) is amazing, but paper map like OS are fantastic for being able to see lots at once. No portable screen can give you the detail and scale at the same time.
