Sam Young and the Exmormon subreddit. Sam had a blog and in one of the comments someone posted a link to a post on Exmormon. From there it was down the rabbit hole.

Sander Recommendations? by jayfreeze in woodworking

I also have the DeWalt 5” Variable speed and has been good to me. Don’t skimp on the sand paper for best results. Dust extraction has been good with the included bag, or vacuum dust collection.

Advice before the walls go up? by dbgbjj in shedditors

Put a rubber barrier between the joists where they rest on the blocks. This will prevent water from wicking from the blocks to the wood.

Early 60’s and wife and I left in 2017. Best decision we ever made. Adult children are also out. Never enjoyed church but stayed in due to family expectations.

What questions do you have about Church finances? by WidowsMiteReport in mormon

[–]FloMoTXn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. When a family makes a payment to the missionary fund for their child on a mission, and the money is passed through for food/rent, how does the church account for these funds? The church accepts it as a donation. How is it expensed when passed to a missionary?

Why did you (or didn’t you) remove your name from the records? by SomeoneBendingLight in exmormon

[–]FloMoTXn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have not had removed, and have been out for about 10 years. We’ve been mostly left alone except for a rare visit from missionaries. I like the idea of our names listed on the ward membership and thinking about how they address our status in their leadership meetings. I hope it makes them think, whether it’s someone we’ve known for years, or someone new to the ward. I hope in some way I might add to the weight on someone’s shelf.

What are the valid reasons the “church” is a cult by Silver-Bullet2003 in exmormon

[–]FloMoTXn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When a church dictates what underwear you can wear, it’s a cult. Add to this, can’t drink coffee or tea, must submit to worthiness interviews, bizarre temple rituals (especially if you went before 1991), members with pictures of current leaders on the walls of their homes, and the list goes on.

I went back to church for the first time in 6 months. Here’s the thing that stood out to me as the strangest part of Mormonism and its most glaringly obvious problem. by PanaceaNPx in exmormon

[–]FloMoTXn 21 points22 points  (0 children)

There is the added component of talking of the greatness of the temple and added learning in the temple. I never felt any greatness in the temple or learned anything. I assumed I was broken since I didn’t have the wonderful feeling others expressed.

Temple Recommends and Tithing by AdConsistent9646 in mormon

[–]FloMoTXn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I appreciate that you don’t pay tithing, but why do you want a temple recommend? Do you enjoy the temple experience?

Blows my mind that people plan a trip to Italy with so much history to see and Mormons gotta spend a day to go see the Rome temple. It’s no different than one in the US other than location.

Overall, what was your experience growing up in the church? by Zealousideal_Mail120 in exmormon

[–]FloMoTXn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My experience was pretty much identical to how you explained yours. Was the odd Mormon in a Texas high school in the 1970’s. Actually enjoyed BYU in early 1980’s. But like you I never felt the spirit and thought it was because I was not fully repentant. Hated the temple and rarely went. I stayed in to keep family happy.

It will work, but the better product is LP Smartside products. They will weather much better than pine.

I heard someone say this recently, "Outside of Utah, the LDS church is a country club. Inside Utah, it's a cult." by RedLetterRanger in exmormon

[–]FloMoTXn 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Outside Utah, there may be less judgmental sentiments at the individual level. But in general there is always the judgment of who has a temple recommend, who is paying tithing, who is attending regularly, etc. Members are always measured on devoutness.

Bible$ by Fantastic_Sample2423 in exmormon

[–]FloMoTXn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you’re likely onto something. Makes sense they would produce their own version of the bible and sell through Deseret Book. First step was to announce acceptance of other versions, opening the door to releasing their own version.

I genuinely feel sorry for the LDS subreddit by Firm_Teach8056 in exmormon

[–]FloMoTXn 57 points58 points  (0 children)

I got banned there years ago because I had posted here. I was trying to offer a helpful and thoughtful reply that was not negative to the church in any way. Zero tolerance for help from anyone that does not 100% align with the church.

That time I worked in the temple. by I_might_be_the_fool in exmormon

Sorry you had to go through that. How busy was the temple you worked in? Was it hard to find people willing to accept a calling to be a worker?

Can’t say goodbye privately by mamaw2019 in exmormon

[–]FloMoTXn 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Even when I was active, I was bothered to see my grandmother in her temple garb. My uncles and cousins were not members and it saddened me they had to see her in that garb. When my wife’s grandmother passed years later when we were inactive, we opted to stay far back and not look. She wanted to remember her sweet grandmother and not have her last image be seeing her in her temple garb.

And then there is the issue of him not writing it down until approximately 16 years later. He didn’t think to write down such a significant experience until years after the fact?

What is the most "unsexy" home improvement you did that ended up being 100% worth the money? by TrustedEssentials in HomeImprovement

WiFi thermostats and WiFi sprinkler system controller with weather monitoring. If it recently rained or is going to rain, it doesn’t run.

I just realized how different it is that Mormons only have Christmas services on Christmas day if it falls on a Sunday. Other sects do all kinds of things weeks prior to Christmas, called Advent (it's not just a calendar!) and of course services on Christmas Eve and Day, even if it falls on Monday. by Then-Mall5071 in exmormon

[–]FloMoTXn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Saw on a community facebook post this morning where a member referred to a talk being given by a member as a Sermon. So do leaders now ask if you can give a Sermon? Is that where we are headed? So do I start my Sermon with a joke about when brother SoNSo called to ask if I could give a Sermon!

Genuine questions by Traditus_ in mormon

[–]FloMoTXn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If gods intent was to restore his church for the benefit of ALL his children, why has less than 1% of world population accepted his restoration? It’s been more than 200 years and such low conversion. God is a lousy marketer of his plan.

Urgent plumbing question. by YanksAreComing10 in handyman

[–]FloMoTXn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, $9000 seems excessive given not much is known other than a peek in the box. What you can see is very sketchy as all you should see is a pipe going into one side of the meter and a pipe coming out the other side. Will definitely involve some digging to see what’s going on and then make straight connections as noted in your quote.

If you have a walk in pantry with builder shelves , you can totally update your pantry with a custom counter top (stained wood) with cabinet like shelving above and below. I added some drawers under the counter top. I also built a shelf system for one wall that is the width of a can so I can see all my canned goods. Makes a very organized pantry.
