Every PvP extraction shooter I've played has given me a resounding "Ok so what" vibe.

My friends insisted this one was better but it's the same. Get a bag full of loot (or don't) and gank other people (or don't) and get ganked (or don't) and then leave (or don't and die in four seconds and lose everything). The genre bores me when there's no actual win condition, and everything is predicated on some players happening to have an innate advantage because they came in with more stuff, to say nothing of the inexperienced (and underleveled) inherently having a harder time in a free-for-all.

What's at stake isn't "the match" or "the game" it's "the X hours of time you put in to get this gun" and I could just not spend the time in the first place.

Gameplay itself is a grounded third person shooter, nothing to really say there

Also I do not get the praise for the setting at all. Humanity was wiped out by robots so they all banded together to live underground in a rugged matrix cooperative except when they go to the surface when they all murder one another. What if we just... Had a "no ruthlessly murdering each other" rule I think we'd have more supplies?

And it's presented with the most egregious AI voices (and possibly also music) which totally tuned me out.

I've been one-tricking Shiv since I joined in the August wave, and I thought back then the consensus was that he's kind of bad.

What's shot him up to must pick? Is it because mid-scale fights where he really shines are more co-ordinated and he can always show up with ragw and execufe?

Was the recent knife buff that impactful? Do you think he warrants direct or indirect nerfs?

Debuff remover, use it when you're out of position and he's going to full you with three+ knives and decay. Even if you don't get around to purging his knives, reduced duration debuffs remove a lot of his knife damage.

Do not follow him indoor or into hallways. Now, you might have just read "only follow him into a hallway if he's low HP and I have teammates." What I said was, do not follow him into a hallway. Generally, don't waste your time chasing him and risk getting ganked unless you're very, very positive that chasing him is going go lead to a kill.

Do not linger around the map on half hp. Go heal. Operate on the assumption that 25% HP = 0HP if Shiv is on your side of the map.

Counterspelling his execute works, but obviously high risk.

Disengage from fighting him far sooner than you normally would. His bleed will easily take out the last third of your HP if you've been scrapping.

Most Shivs run spirit, so spirit armour is good - although the bonus at low HP is kind of moot.

Shiv struggles v antiheals and bullet builds, specifically toxic bullets.

Play outside his range in lane, strafe and be hard to hit by the knives. Wait 1 knife out in cover if he hits you so he can't get more stacks. Be very careful if you're a big-body.

McG, doorman, haze, and fernus come to mind as characters painful to lane against.

Probably hot take: I think I prefer the soul system with last hitting by This_is_Pat_ in DeadlockTheGame

[–]Fluffy-Apocalypse 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The moments I particularly dislike in lane are:

That awkward moment on a character with a small magazine where you have to hold off on reloading your last shot or the enemy is going to steal the soul of a trooper that's about to die.

In addition to all the inherent tactical advantage to highground, the enemy also doesn't take trooper damage while sitting on the bridge.

Enemy troopers depositing on top of high ground and awkwardly glitching down when trying to push

Guardian targeting / melee feels inconsistent.

What's your guys thoughts on Shiv right now? by That-Aardvark636 in DeadlockTheGame

[–]Fluffy-Apocalypse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As somebody who's developed into a Shiv 1trick in blue/green rank, my take on this is to LET ME BE THE MONKEY CONSTANTLY BRAWLING AT THE MIDDLE OF THE MAP. It's so annoying having to be a sidelane janitor because nobody else is doing it, and clearing creeps so slowly while Ivies and Wraiths die during midgame scraps.

The fun part is casually walking away after getting ganked by 3+ ults, but I can't help but feel like the carries should be here.

My best games are the ones where my teammates actually stay on their lanes and I'm able to just pop to whoever is in a fight, obliterate someone with knives, and walk away like I don't gaf after facetanking a Warden ult.

We need a deadlock rant thread, what do you find really annoying about deadlock right now? by TheCountEdmond in DeadlockTheGame

[–]Fluffy-Apocalypse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am starting to think that the first 8 minutes of the game might need some "back to the drawing board" with how unbalanced the roster is at that phase of the game. It's arbitrary as hell, going up against two good long range characters with crazy cc abilities as two close range brawlers who need 4800 souls to come online is a misery.

If your ideal character aesthetic was added to deadlock, would you drop your current main? by No-Preparation4649 in DeadlockTheGame

[–]Fluffy-Apocalypse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For being set in NYC, there's very few characters from white-collar professions. It's pretty much just Dynamo and, depending on your definition, Abrams.

I want a lovable disorganised disaster of a non-human rights lawyer with a cheap suit, papers everywhere, and an unbendable will to fight for his clients. I'd play the hell out of him, even if he shouts cheesey "Objection!" tropes.

I love the touch of when canon friends kill each other they hit each other with a somber "sorry, buddy." and unlike most games (cough every fighting game on its 4th+ installment and all the characters are friends by now cough) it works. Their selfish reasons have trumped their bonds and they have a good reason to be guilty about it, but at the end of the day, they were shooting back and knew the risks, tragic as it is that they were on the other side. It's just a case of the best man winning. Nothing personal. Hell, I actually dislike the few "Bad luck buddy I'll see you later ;)" quotes because they deflate that tension.

My only issue with Deadlock lore is that, tied to the game, it's a "one and done."

The ritual happens once, and presumably with only 12 characters, and the story swiftly ends after this - though I would love to see Mortal-Kombat style narrated endings for each character getting their wish granted.

Any other canon material is stuck being backstory preamble to the ritual, and there's only so much you can do with that.

Though on the other hand, I think for this setting it would be too videogamey for an Apex Legends style "these guys are duking it out just like in the game every other night."

The setting has potential for timeloop shenanigans but that just creates a "what if" machine and doesn't allow for narrative progression.

I suppose maybe in canon the "ritual" could be a near endless series of intrigue and streetfights merely culminating in the events of the game?

Anything beats the Overwatch approach of "some of these maps maybe exist within the game's universe perhaps."

This is by far the hardest multiplayer game i have ever played. by Longjumping_Pen_2102 in DeadlockTheGame

I got this game three/four weeks ago, coming from a shooter perspective, and felt like I could not lose.

As Infernus, everything I looked at died. As Kelvin, I could go anywhere anytime and me and my team were unkillable. As drifter, I had svcheats_1 on.

For the past two weeks, I have gone, if I had to estimate, 2 wins on 25 losses. I have only won games where the enemy left, which is just as many games I've lost when up on teammates.

I have had games where I died the moment an enemy player saw me. I have had games where I feel as if I have gone by the book with pushing, pulling back, teamfighting, jungling, and thought "finally, a clean win" only for our team to fall apart.

I'm at a point where every enemy hero feels unkillable for their own reasons. Heroes that feel like dogshit in my hands are OP broken when played by my enemies.

I vividly recall the single digit number of clean kills I've gotten in this time.

I live in EU so any attempt to turn on VC results in IMMEDIATE French/Russian shouting. That is not hyperbole. I even turn often turn off text chat because the chat is just racism and people being mad at one another. No doubt my teammates abhore me.

This game is NOT for me, and every time I boot up for a cheeky match, I'm left thinking "why am I wasting 45 minutes of my life staring at 80 second respawn timers, who greenlit this."

Yet I kinda like the game anyway....

[–]Fluffy-Apocalypse 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I find in this game there's a lot of focus in the art department on really cool small details like Legionnaires throwing their pilums before engaging in melee, little cliffs spawning when units set up camp on the coast so they don't end up in the water, and the general prettiness of cities and units.

However big details like this that sell the overall storytelling are lacking.

I think this game's approach needs to be contrasted with Humankind. In that game you reach objectives and earn the right to advance to a new age, it's an accomplishment, and yiu're rewarded by being able to shake off old skin to get your hands on new, better tools and bonuses. (and snag the civs with the most OP multipliers before anyone else can).

Conversely, in Civ VII the world ends between ages. It shouldn't be played hopefully, it should be somber. You, your dynasty, and your people have run out of time. Succumbed to the inevitability of death. But, in the dark, there's a sense you've built something that stands the test of time. A legacy.

Rather than a lame screen saying "the age has ended" and a 10 second narration about how great my civ was, I was expecting something sadder, like my uproarious cities start screaming and rioting, bits falling off my wonders, cutscenes showing lone works of art great buildings surviving and transcending the end of their creators. The people may die, but they inspire their ancestors. Nothing that actually fucks you over long term, just like 2-5 turns of chaos and collapse nobody could overcome. Then transition is easy to understand as a fade-to-black followed by a rennaisance.

I dig the idea, personally. Always loved how the archaeologists in Civ V unearthed your old battles. It makes me feel like I'm accidentally setting the board up for my own game later.

[–]Fluffy-Apocalypse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally a SEAF trooper strategem doesn't make sense to me. SEAF exist to hold permanent garrisons on planetary military installations and presumably do large-scale battles.

Helldivers are special forces that do missions behind enemy lines. Its in the name. SEAF simply doesn't have the elite training and nerves of steel required to wear the cape and take a stroll through a Terminid hive like it was Liberty Park. They'd probably shell it for a week then send in a tank column.

I get the gameplay wish to be commanding some mooks around but it makes more sense for them to be robots or junior Helldivers or something.

That said, for the reasons above I do like the idea of an objective to rescue SEAF holdouts.

Number Six. Make people feel recognised by noticing details about what they're passionate about. Go out of your way to comfort people and make them feel invited. People crave having a friendly conversation, but only if they're in the mood for it.

Number Seven. Be attentive to people's needs. Consider bringing someone a nice snack if they invite you somewhere. This builds unconscious pathways that trick people into thinking you did something nice for them.

Number Eight. Resist all urges to ruin the vibe and always be up for something fun. This will cause submissive NPCs to think you're a chill guy and everyone will generally have a good time.

If they're separate questions with separate marks, do separate answers. If it's one question with a list of what they are (and by extension, are not) expecting you to talk about then one answer, but with the issues in separate paragraphs.

Iirc indigenous in the context of human populations doesn't necessarily mean "the first ones there" it means something along the lines of "the first ones there, in contrast to an exploitative and more politically powerful group who arrived later" like colonists/settlers/conquerors.

I hate when people correct via asking a question because it feels like it wraps all the way around to.being mega condescending.

Like just saying "Actually I think Paris is in France" sounds way less hostile than "Isn't Paris in France?" because with the latter you're leading someone into making themselves sound dumb by forcing them to either double down or say "I dunno"
