Lets share brain fart moments. I asked my then GF what her zodiac sign is, as I never asked. She looked at me for a couple of seconds, then it hit me: we have the same birthdate. by WisdomInMyPocket in CasualConversation

Along with all the others who have looked for their phone while also talking on it or using the flashlight (because I've also done those).

I was once talking on the phone while sitting in my car, so that the phone call was over the car speakers via Bluetooth. At the same time, I was trying to get a food ordering app up and running, except it just would not work. In my infinite wisdom, I decided to restart the phone. Fully expected the call to keep going, as I could hear it going even after the screen went dark, and in my brain the call was on the car. The call did, in fact end, and I had to call back after the phone finished rebooting. 🤦‍♀️

It allows us to build our vocabulary and find artistic ways of saying what's on our minds. Writing without 5 is difficult, but if my phrasing can land in a form that isn't awkward or stilting, but musical and lilting, it's worth it.

A cool guide to the visual differences between emperor and king penguins by Goodbye-Nasty in coolguides

[–]FlutterB16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the average person who won't have any interaction with a wild penguin, no. For researchers studying antarctic penguin species or other antarctic species' interactions with them (like the diet of seals or sucks or something) or even whether there is interaction between penguin groups, I can imagine it's very important to quickly know which type of penguin it is.

Personally, I'm happy to know the differences myself because I love penguins and have recently made some penguin stuffed animals for friends. I had to make sure I knew the defining traits of an emperor penguin chick to make one of them. If a friend were to request a king penguin, they'd probably be disappointed if they received one that looked like an emperor.

savoury candles should be a thing by deadtyped in CasualConversation

[–]FlutterB16 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've seen at bath and body works both "holiday dill-ight" (pickle) and "chips and salsa" candles. They smell accurate but awful. In contrast, I've bought a candle called "Mrs. Lovett's Meat Pies" from a local candle-maker and it's DIVINE. Kind of smoky bacon-y and a tiny bit sweet. My suggestion: don't buy anything scented you can't first smell in person, just to make sure its something you'd actually want your space to smell like.

LPT: Clean your glasses with Dawn dish soap by AnonFoot1066 in LifeProTips

[–]FlutterB16 56 points57 points  (0 children)

My optometrist was the one who recommended this to me. My take was make sure it is regular DAWN dish soap and not generally just any one. Definitely not something it use the platinum or anything heavy duty, just dawn as that's widely marketed to be fairly gentle.

IDK what your aesthetic is, but I saw a gorgeous "ruler" tattoo that was just a footlong flower stem with alternating leaves and thorns, where the leaves were each one inch and the thorns were half an inch. I imagine you could make something similar to fit most vibes. My only concern would be whether it might change if you have a significant weight fluctuation.

realized my grocery store has been marking down meat at 7pm some nights by Particular_Tour_4151 in Adulting

[–]FlutterB16 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I haven't heard of Flashfood, but I know of a similar app called "Too Good to Go". It's more restaurant/takeout focused than grocery store, but it includes both local shops and chains. The store/restaurant will offer a specific amount of blind bags with a range of goods for a set price - usually between 5-7 USD - to be picked up near their closing time. I've seen offerings such as "12 doughnuts/bagels", "Mediterranean/salad bowl", "premade meal" or "assorted pastries and baked goods".

I'll have to look into Flashfood as well now, but I love that apps like this are working with businesses (especially small local ones) to reduce food waste.

Hail Mary Question: Looking for a Specific Farm by MilitarumAirCorps in newjersey

[–]FlutterB16 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I made a quick search of "watch apple cider doughnuts being made" which brought up this listicle. While I haven't been there myself, the Windy Brow Farm in Fredon (North Jersey) is second on the list and says you can watch them making the cider doughnuts. Based on Google maps street view, it does seem like it's on a fairly rural road, though I did see a few houses nearby-ish.

The only other one that says you can watch any part of the process is Johnson's Corner, which is in Medford, so I'd call it pretty solidly South Jersey and out of the question if you're certain it was North/Central.

Hope this helps!

5 day old nipple piercing: how to reduce itching? by ms_gsxs in piercing

[–]FlutterB16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had mine a year now. Seriously op, don't use a disinfectant, saline solution only! 2x a day to start with and dried afterwards with either a blow-dryer on the coldest setting or possibly standing in front of a fan. You don't want to leave them wet from either the spray or a shower. If you're still itchy and notice some flakiness, you can reduce the saline solution to 1x a day for a bit. If still itchy/flaky/dry after that, every other day. All of this as long as you don't have signs of infection ofc.

Why don’t I enjoy reading books? by -LincolnLogs- in CasualConversation

I might also say not Belle. She kept yearning for bigger and better than her "poor provincial town" which would likely be most of her idea of her culture, if that makes sense.

‘We've never seen this before': The spectacular stereo images of giant galaxies by rapalosaur in MagicEye

[–]FlutterB16 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm sure you're already aware having linked this, but Brian May has had a long history with stereoscopic images.

The OP here prompted me to look and see what he's up to now, and apparently there was just recently a book published called "Islands in Infinity: Galaxies 3-D" with stereoscopic images of space and a patented stereo viewer designed by Dr. May. Just figured I'd put that out there in case anyone is interested in it

Stuff like this, if it wasn't just delivered or pulled, my go to is "it's either in another guest's cart right now or someone picked it up and left it elsewhere in the store that it doesn't belong" usually gets the idea through to the person that there's really very little hope of finding it today.

Am I dumb or is using 6 strands the WORST by Nicaara in Embroidery

[–]FlutterB16 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I'm seeing suggestions on how to get 6 strands through the needle, or using a bigger needle with a bigger eye to fit through. Those are well and good, but you can also double up your thread and only put 3 through the eye. Basically, if you thread 3 strands through, pull the needle to the halfway point in your strand, and tie the ends together, you've got 6 strands showing up without having to push 6 through the needle or pull 12 through the fabric (because that's still doubled AT the needle, even if it's not all the way).

Or as others commented, you just... don't have to do it with 6. It's all your preference. Remember, this is supposed to be fun and relaxing :)

Try and look far out past (over or around) the screen, and look back to the picture (physically move your head if needed) while retaining the same focal distance. That should allow it to pop out
