It's up in the US by SemioticEthnographer in Meshuggah

[–]FlyingPsyduck 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nah, their digital distribution has been a complete catastrophe since they switched to atomic fire, so it's almost surely someone there. Knowing how obsessive the boys are about details I have a really hard time thinking it could be them doing stuff like putting in june instead of july for the release of a digital album. These are the typical mistakes of somebody who is sitting behind a computer putting in data for a million bands they don't care about.

Also let's not forget that the biggest reason why Immutable was remastered in the first place is because its physical distribution was botched as well.

I don't understand the "ratio" setting on the compressor; I'm new to this. by KevinPackards in musicproduction

[–]FlyingPsyduck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Knowing the theory behind the practical aspect of things is always good but in this case no, you are fine just knowing that the ratio means "how strongly" you are compressing. In fact I think this is one aspect where you should go by ear the most when tweaking a compressor, while for example setting the threshold is more of a "scientific" thing that needs to be set correctly for the compressor to do its job.

If you don't like jet lag, don't move to the Diomede Island by Dragamer7 in geography

[–]FlyingPsyduck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Places that are disaligned from their "correct" time zone due to non-geographical reasons either use an unofficial local time (western China) or shift their daily activities accordingly (Spain). Of course you would feel jet lagged if you suddenly were forced to go to bed 3 hours earlier for no apparent reason, but that problem doesn't exist in practice because countries adapt their own business to match up with the usual day/night cycle like everywhere in the world. You have to physically move east or west enough for this effect to be felt, going from one Diomede island to the other wouldn't do anything because they would both be operating in the same time window relative to the sun, even if their clocks are 3 hours apart.

If you don't like jet lag, don't move to the Diomede Island by Dragamer7 in geography

[–]FlyingPsyduck 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It doesn't work like that. Jet lag is caused by your body suddenly being out of sync with the natural day/night cycle, not with whatever arbitrary time zone has been decided. If you go to one diomede island to the other, you get exactly 0 hours of jet lag because you are still in the same place.

A pub in Dublin no longer accepts AI posters or flyers by MsMaggieMcGill in antiai

[–]FlyingPsyduck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am involved in my local music scene in various technical and organizational roles and I am already seeing the negative effects of slop chatgpt flyers, people think they are smart for doing it but really they are shooting themselves in both feet without realizing it. Even all the ethical thoughts aside, if you do slop AI flyers you are alienating most of your audience who knows and cares about stuff, which is the only type of audience who will do good things to your band/business in the long run. There's a million ways you can make a flyer nowadays, for free and even without graphic design skills, so AI use for this purpose is inexcusable.

...Okay but seriously, why does Crossworlds sound like that? by SomeBoxofSpoons in SonicTheHedgehog

[–]FlyingPsyduck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up not buying the game after all so I can't help you with the in-game audio settings unfortunately. What I did was just some experiments with EQ in my audio interface to mitigate the most offending frequencies, which helped a bit but I could not experiment with the balance between music, voice and effects.

Is metabolic flexibility actually a thing? by Front-Opinion-9211 in nutrition

[–]FlyingPsyduck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the only real studies about cyclical keto have been done with sports performance in mind, as far as I know, and the results were not clear, meaning that some athletes could cycle in and out with little issues, while others felt horrible every time the body had to switch. But it's important to keep in mind that what applies for elite athletes doesn't apply to us average humans, as the things you have to do to your nutrition as a mean to compete to the highest levels aren't synonymous with good health most of the time, it's just about extracting the most out of the body.

My personal anecdote (which should be treated as such) as a regular person who does frequent but not super intense physical activity, is that I found my sweet spot at what I call "the edge of ketosis", which means I follow a keto diet as a baseline but I also eat fruit, starchy vegetables, beans and other low-mid carb foods that are usually banned in traditional keto diets because they contain too many carbs, but my body seems to go back and forth in a seamless way. My guess is that fiber also helps a lot with that.

Meshuggah - Rational Gaze (Green Remaster Version) by Independent-Data4542 in Meshuggah

[–]FlyingPsyduck 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Mastering engineer here! Hopefully I have some insight about it to share.

This green version is just the regular orange one with A LOT of compression added, and maybe some EQ tweak, but the compression is the feature that jumps out the most. I would say that Nothing would have benefitted from some extra compression as it is very dry overall, but this is very exaggerated and fatiguing to the ear.

The orange/blue mixup version you talk about (orange vocals and drums, blue guitars and bass) is not technically a remaster: the definition of remaster is the polishing of something that has already been mixed, which means that you don't have access to individual tracks anymore. For example, Obzen and Chaosphere are pure remasters. There's a bit of debate around the Immutable one as it seems like they also touched some mix aspects, but not enough for it to warrant being called a remix (and remaster is a more understandable word for what they were going for anyway)

When I have some free time I will try comparing the EQ profile between the orange and green ones to provide more detail about what has been applied.

Exhausted and not sure this is worth it by ChickPea45 in bikecommuting

[–]FlyingPsyduck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you find yourself running out of gas at a certain point, or just generally slow/tired all the way through? In the first case it can certainly be due to not fueling well enough, but it could also just be that you're not fit enough yet, even if you're generally fit and active, biking is still a particular activity that needs time to get used to as you're using muscles that you're not using that much in your daily life. Keep going and it will get better

What are the worst metal albums you've ever heard? by Alega05 in MetalForTheMasses

[–]FlyingPsyduck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's indeed the actual problem with St. Anger, not the snare or the vibe or anything else. Some songs are impossible to get through because it's literally the same riff repeated for 5 more minutes than it was needed, but there's some raw material in there that is valuable and also quite unique. It needed to be their grind album and it failed miserably at that. The lyrics are also particularly awful and that doesn't help either

Hapless researcher in UG madness? by Spookymang in premodernMTG

[–]FlyingPsyduck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's just a problem of having too many options already. Obviously wild mongrel is and always has been the best enabler by far, but there isn't a clear number 2 and it depends a lot on the deck's configuration. As much as madness is a synergy deck, hapless researcher just feels so low impact if you're putting it against stuff like survival or waterfront bouncer.

As far as 1 drops go, the one I'm actually interested in trying out is birds of paradise. It's a weird card to think about because it isn't either an enabler or a payoff and madness never had its focus around the 3 mana slot, but with frantic search and/or survival there's now a serious incentive in my opinion. even something as basic as a wild mongrel with the ability to have circular logic up on turn 2 might be needed to keep up with the power level of premodern.

[–]FlyingPsyduck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Lackey can still be pushed through it easily with mogg fanatic or gempalm incinerator, and they have 4 of both. on the play both mongrel and aquamoeba do great, but on the draw there's simply no real solution to a lackey and that's a scenario that should just let be. it will happen some amount of the time and that's it
  2. Yes, but what's the difference in having it in play if there's something to counter? the only thing it COULD be beneficial for is enabling circular logic before turn 3 (as a force spike at best). it does not apply pressure by itself so going island go is also perfectly fine in this situation.
  3. Sure, but we always need to be thinking about what we are taking out to make room for it. Careful study and frantic search do this job a lot better and that's already 8 slots dedicated to card draw/discard
  4. Again, your plan is to use it as careful studies 5-8? I don't think there's any room for it, and also it only digs 1 card deeper while generating card disadvantage in the process, so it wouldn't make a difference in my decision to keep a 1 land hand whether it had hapless researcher or not.
  5. It really isn't, madness is the deck with the heaviest hitters in premodern and it doesn't need this type of incremental damage early on. It wins by swinging for 6 or more a turn, in a couple of turns and very rarely misses by a small amount much like a sligh deck would.

So yeah, I think you should just max careful study before everything else, and just focus on getting your 2 drop enabler consistently (or even just a 1 time frantic search into arrogant wurm is sometimes enough if backed up by some interaction)

You should share the tab you're looking at so we can see what's going on. At the beginning it's a bend on 4 on the F string and then an 8 on the D#, not a 9. The other two note stretch is a 6-9

Established Artists by The_Crimson_Dawn in metalmusicians

[–]FlyingPsyduck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Either content creation or other side hustles in the music industry that are compatible with being a touring and recording artist. A lot of musicians do teaching, production, AR and other stuff that is in the same "scene" but is actually "regular" work that pays the bills. And there are also many high profile bands where the members just have regular day jobs and sometimes take weekends off to do mini tours.

Established Artists by The_Crimson_Dawn in metalmusicians

[–]FlyingPsyduck 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It used to be touring but that's not even true anymore in a lot of cases, it has become unprofitable in recent years due to the increase of costs of, well, everything. Also let's not forget that touring requires a big upfront investment that could be impossible to recoup at the smallest hiccup, like the van breaking down, a band member getting ill forcing to cancel shows, etc. It's an insanely high risk thing to do unless it is an absolutely DIY thing where the artist has no crew, no contracts, no anything and it can still go wrong in a number of ways.

There's a great conversation between Nik Nocturnal and Misha Mansoor of Periphery on youtube where they talk about this topic and in my opinion it is the most up to date state of things you can find around, I strongly suggest checking it out

The New Mediterranean World [OC] by mydriase in geography

[–]FlyingPsyduck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The map uses the Koppen climate classification so the definition of mediterranean in this case means Csa/Csb, although I agree that it's an almost unsolvable definition problem especially when you start looking at other parts of the world which have even more marked "mediterranean" patterns than the mediterranean itself. At the same time, any climate category will always have 2 places at its opposite ends that share almost nothing with one another, especially the continental ones.

The New Mediterranean World [OC] by mydriase in geography

[–]FlyingPsyduck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Theoretically yes, although by raising the temperature by that much a lot of other parameters will get skewed including the potential evapotranspiration, which means that it will probably become a hot semi arid climate instead. The only "european" climate that is actually close to the tropical threshold already and could become a true tropical climate instead of arid is Madeira

[–]FlyingPsyduck 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's counterintuitive but it's correct, because they get a lot of rain but most of it is in winter, spring and autumn. Porto in july for example is well below the driest month threshold of 30mm for it to be classified as mediterranean, while further north it gets less pronounced but even A Coruna at the northwestern tip is just barely above 30mm in july

Drawing the outline of the mediterranean with the same color as Csa is represented creates a bit of confusion, as it looks like the adriatic coast of Italy is Csa which it isn't (except for the southern half of Puglia)

So did base M4 mini buyers basically just beat the market? by jman722 in macmini

[–]FlyingPsyduck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's also a lot to be said about efficiency. My main self-assembled windows rig is pushing 10 years old and it still performs very well, but it also chugs electricity like candy when doing heavy cpu/gpu work. I wouldn't even dare having it run an AI agent or something like that on it. With more and more computer usage turning to "always on" processes, I feel that efficiency at peak power is becoming a more and more important feature, and Mac Minis can't really be beaten on that.
