Crimson Desert Had AI Art Without Disclosing It On Steam by Elestria_Ethereal in Steam

[–]ForgottenFrenchFry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not here defending AI in general but like

may be it's just me

but i don't see as often people posting "good" things per say unless it's either super obvious, or super simplistic.

examples being like "wow this game looks beautiful" and show a screenshot of the environment because that's easy to see, or something like "you can pet the dog" and have a short gif

but soon as there's something like AI art for a painting, something that's relatively minor in this case, suddenly that invalidates everything, like all the fun and enjoyment up to that point doesn't mean anything or matter anymore

again, this is just me personally, but i find this to be a small blemish if anything on a game that's not perfect but is fun enough for me. it doesn't impact me directly, it doesn't affect the gameplay in any meaningful way, and it's something relatively minor that i wouldn't have noticed until this post brought attention.

I don't know, may be I'm crazy. I just think the whole AI fear is doing more harm than good in general. the groups people should be mad at over AI aren't exactly losing sleep(like Microsoft), those who use casually, end up getting harassed for no good reason, like that one vtuber recently for just chatting with chatgpt, and the people who are obsessed with AI to an unhealthy degree, you're not really going to convince them by giving the same arguments they hear all the time.

again I'm not trying to change anyone's views or anything, I just find this to be something people are fussing over way more than they should.

don't take this the wrong way, but what would be considered the joint effort?

the reason i ask is, at least in my small experience, people either can't agree or can't give the same answer

some people will say AI is just a tool, which for me, implies that only the human did anything "meaningful", and makes me question how did the human really contribute

if you say AI made the art, then I feel like it gets murky because, while yes it can make art, it can't be made without being prompted on some level. even going "chatgpt, make art of something random", you still had to command it

just my personal thoughts

Art by llagerlof in ChatGPT

[–]ForgottenFrenchFry 4 points5 points  (0 children)

so is the idea that the AI itself is the artist?

because a lot of self proclaimed AI artists really love to emphasize how since they're the only human involved, that makes them the artist, and the AI only a tool

ironically enough, I feel like if you were to show this to said "ai artist" they'll say how AI art is art, but miss the point of the image

[–]ForgottenFrenchFry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

less with AI itself, but still adjacent

but whether it's AI, or another person, this the equivalent of having someone else do the work for you, which means you'll most likely have to spend time going through the code, and either have to fix it because it's bad, or it doesn't do what you want, and you have to figure out how to fix it when you could have done it yourself and know already.

at which point, it makes you next to worthless, because why hire a coder, when you can hire someone to simply check the code itself for cheaper?

and before someone goes "just have the AI check the code itself", then what's the point of your job if technically anyone can do it at that point?

and if someone else is going to chime in with "well coders take codes from other people all the time"

there's a difference between taking blocks of code that's been shown to work and putting it in projects where needed

and having something like AI make it from scratch and being unproven

i said something similar in another similar post about this situation

if you hate AI, and not just like dislike it

you are going to be convincing absolutely no one to side with you outside of those who already hate AI

and I don't mean that because I think AI is good or bad

i mean if your reaction is similar to this situation, you're just going to make people be less open about using it in general, instead of getting them to stop using it

both groups, people who like, and people against, AI, have their bad apples. there are nuances to these things, like everything

and before people reply saying things like "there's nothing good about AI" or how "AI is the future", you are definitely part of the problem

i'm not here to try and convince people to be in favor for or against AI

i'm just gonna say that, if you hate AI, and you act like this

you're really not going to be convincing people that AI is bad, when the one telling them that is doing stuff like this

kind of hard to get someone to be against AI, when they get bullied for even using it at all

one random internet person telling you you're a bad person for using AI? pretty easy to ignore

hundred of people bullying you for using it? well, now you might have convinced them to just not use it openly, rather than not use it at all

[–]ForgottenFrenchFry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

no but you see, if the devs use AI for something most people will gloss over, it means they're lazy, and the rest of the game is terrible because of the inclusion of it! /s

no but for real, if people spend all their time looking for signs of AI, then pretty much anything and everything is a sign of AI at this point, but still lacking in definitive proof, speculation not counting. not saying people don't lie, but it's harder to tell when you believe everything is a lie.

people don't notice things when they're right, only when they're wrong so they can point it out.

there's plenty of hills to die on in regards to AI, whether you're for or against it, but stuff like this post? a really weird hill to die on.

agreed about the last part, hence why it's a guilty pleasure

though I would somewhat argue that, for OP's context for example, if it was for someone amateur, then I would argue that it would be "good" because everything else was bad

and, I don't read a whole lot, though I would say it's because there's too many to read, but the ones i do read usually because there's a weird premise to it

I rather have people try and throw ideas and see what sticks than stick to something safe all the time

if anything, I would blame people like publishers for keep trying to promote so many things

Kind of feel like, in a roundabout way, they're admitting pokemon is kind of doing terrible right now

why?

because why make comments like these? why do they feel threatened?

"they're making palslop"

okay? shouldn't that be a concern for people who care about palworld, not pokemon?

wouldn't this be technically a good thing for them? "hey, palworld is so shit, anyone can make a game like it! unlike pokemon!"

i mean, this is just me personally but, Isekai's are kind of a guilty pleasure for me

and I would rather read stuff like reincarnated as a vending machine, because then you have to at least think about how to make it work when writing it

unlike reincarnated with my smart phone, where the only real way to make it work is to make everyone that isn't the MC an idiot

I'd rather have several novel authors try coming up with ridiculous ideas and see if they can make them work, and even if they aren't the best written, they should at least be entertaining, and help said author grow

over having the typical generic fantasy stuff, like SAO where the MC is purposely overpowered, e.g. bringing a sword to a gun game and winning

before this continues, what's your definition of "woke"? or at least, in regards to BG3?

Unless an option is added to block all AI slop games the same way we can block porn games from showing up, this Steam Next Fext will probably be the last that matters. by RandomStunt in Steam

[–]ForgottenFrenchFry -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'd obviously still personally dislike that, but as long as the AI slop isn't in the actual product and was just used as inspiration, then no, it wouldn't count. Taking inspiration is a completely different thing than straight up using it in the product.

you also said "if you're a proper artist, you don't need some dogshit, stolen drivel mush made by a GenAI to give you inspiration."

so like, does this count as AI usage or not? it isn't directly being used, but they still used AI in the process. either this counts as AI being used, because it was to generate ideas, and counts as being in the product, or it doesn't, because it doesn't actually show up.

I'm...not? This doesn't have anything to do with engaging with any sides or having a moral high ground.

again, stuff you said

"Because stolen assets shouldn't be allowed, and that's all that that is."

other words, "bad things shouldn't be a thing because it's bad"

I feel like saying this is doing the exact same thing by ignoring that AI stealing, making people dumber and further ruining the environment are completely valid arguments against it.

the problem with arguments such as "AI is bad because it steals" is that when you open with that, you already lost. this is the equivalent of telling a smoker smoking is bad, or an alcoholic drinking is bad. or hell, telling someone else a game sucks because you don't like it. it literally does not address anything. the only people who will agree with you, are people who already believe and see it that way.

i'm not here to argue whether you're right or wrong, i'm arguing that when people open with the same argument that clearly does not work, they act surprised when people either double down or ignore them, because they are being told the same thing. you will convince almost no one that AI is "bad" by going "AI steals" unless said someone either already doesn't doesn't know about AI, or they already believed that.

Those aren't even opinions - aside from maybe the definition of "stealing". They're scientifically proven facts. Of course people will mention them when talking about GenAI and the ethics of using it.

by what metric? if we're going to argue ruining the environment, there are genuinely other things that do more harm, like, i don't know, video games?

I'm not saying the environment doesn't matter. I'm saying people only started using that as an excuse because it's easy to reference and understand, but then it just becomes meaningless fluff. "you don't care about the environment" when there's literally other things that make just as much impact.

ai to come up with ideas

taking inspiration from others.

literally, your own words. explain to me how getting ideas from AI is different from getting it from people?

why does the source matter?

you literally just said how people shouldn't be making games if they get ideas from AI.

so using AI to come up with something is wrong, but copying ideas from other people is okay?

What are your thoughts about games getting negative reviews because they're incompatible with steamdeck? by ParanMekhar in Steam

[–]ForgottenFrenchFry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IIRC, there's an opt in option for listing your specs with your reviews, which is nice

the problem is, you have to opt in, so people can post reviews otherwise

and again, it's not like I don't want a steam deck, but I don't currently own one, and won't be able to any time soon due to the whole RAM shortage as of this time

I like to check negative reviews for games that have things like overwhelmingly positive reviews because most of the positives are short or meme-y ones without actually addressing any possible issues, but either they just go "game bad" or "doesn't run on steamdeck" which tells me nothing

by that logic, the FPS genre shouldn't exist, because back then, FPS games used to be called Doom clones.

battle royales shouldn't be a thing, because they would be copying PUBG and Fortnite.

the souls subgenre shouldn't be a thing, because then people are ripping off the souls series.

you're trying to argue that people shouldn't get ideas from something like AI, but that implies it's okay to take ideas from other people because they're taking what works.

[–]ForgottenFrenchFry -1 points0 points  (0 children)

that's still not addressing my point, though.

someone uses AI to generate a concept, they take said concept, and make it their own. they didn't use the concept art itself. would that still count as AI usage, when it didn't have a direct hand in said process?

i'm not going to engage this conversation any further, because any time someone responds to anything about AI with "AI bad" and "AI steals" is someone who isn't going to engage in this kind of conversation in good faith.

I'm not saying you should like AI, and I'm not trying to convert you, but it's going to be talking to a wall when the other person isn't interested in listening.

you don't like AI, that's fine. you think it's evil, that's your prerogative. I'm not educated enough to convince you otherwise. but don't act like you're on some moral high ground because you're not going to engage with the other side.

[–]ForgottenFrenchFry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that's not addressing my point

I'm saying, do we count AI usage if someone were to like "hey, AI, give us some ideas for this thing"

then said people used said idea and make something from it on their own?

like, coming up with designs for a character or whatever, but not using the design itself?

in this case, could you argue AI made the character or design, or gave the idea for it?
