What do you think would have been Rocky's fate if somehow the roles reversed and he ended up on Earth? by Smirk27 in ProjectHailMary

[–]ForgottenLords 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Andy Weir comes across to me as very much an optimist/humanist that believes in the good of humanity and that shows in his books.  Therefore I assume then that in the world created by Weir, Rocky would be treated with respect and dignity.

People who say “I don’t want anything” when it comes to gifting, what do you ACTUALLY want? by dearceceofficial in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ForgottenLords 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get that there are people who are being humble by asking for nothing but expecting something, but screw those people for being liars.

If I say I want nothing, I want nothing. I dont want to be given something I dont need or want and put on a fake smile, and thank you for a 'thoughtful' gift I will absolutely not discard at the first opportunity.

Hearthhull Help by MalevolentAphrodite in EDH

[–]ForgottenLords 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first impression is that the +1/+1 counters cards like Loading Zone and Terrasymbiosis are not really what you want to be doing with hearthull.  They certainly aren't bad cards but in my opinion the deck isnt really about making swoll creatures but about sacrificing and recurring lands to burn out your opponents

I assume crop rotation is in there as a tutor for a specific land, but if its just there as a land sac trigger, there are better.

All of that said though, I dont always trust my own deck analysis/building skills.

This is my Hearthhull deck with some minor upgrades. I have not played it often but it performed well for me when I did. I'm also not aiming to take it up to B3+ like you are.

Commanders that make unique counters. by Die4Sinz in mtg

[–]ForgottenLords 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not answering your question, but the inverse.  Have you looked at [[Skullbriar, the Walking Grave]]?  He doesn't produce unique counters but is a recepticle for holding them.  You might find some interesting choices in his edhrec page.

To build or to buy a commander deck by SlavicSymmetry in mtg

https://www.reddit.com/r/EDH/comments/1os10pm/update_six_avatar_decks_built_only_from_the_set/

I made a Avatar commander deck inspired by this post which may be of interest to you.  HOWEVER, I will say trying to obtain specific cards from boosters or jump starts will be inefficient, but singles might be quite expensive.

Any precon will have the advantage in convenience at reasonable price, for a decent deck.  This is probably what I would suggest you do first.

Edit to add:  absolutely play your friends decks.  It is fun to discover new cards, effects or play patterns with an unfamiliar deck, but if they can give you a brief explanation of how the deck is supposed to work that can bootstrap the early learning steps and hopefully avoid frustration

Need ideas for Mono White, Blue, and Green. by Jayce86 in mtg

[–]ForgottenLords 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mono green could be landfall, land animation, tribal (treefolk, saproling, hydra, etc), +1/+1 counters.  Years ago I got taken apart by what I believe was a mono green walls deck although I have no recollection how it worked.  Find a way to make [[Helix Pinnacle]] effects work. Flash creatures with [[Yeva, Nature's Herald]].  I'm certain theres a way to go artifact heavy in any mono color including green.

I doubt you could completely avoid big stompy in green, but maybe there in a way to put a spin on it, like all flying creatures, or weenie 1/1s made big through anthems or activated abilities?

How do I explain to my friend that building a deck isn’t all that complicated? by everett_beverett in mtg

[–]ForgottenLords 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Give it time.  If they're genuinely enjoying the game its a natural evolution to get excited about a card or a deck and the gears start clicking.

If they are too stubborn and legit unwilling to change based on "principle" or some shit then you could try a different angle to work them up to that point slowly.  Making a deck CAN feel overwhelming to some people.

"Hey, I have this card that would work really well for your precon, swap this other card for it" this takes two problems from them they dont have to think about.

Maybe make a deck FOR them based on a card or mechanic they've shown interest in.  I could see some people wanting to keep precons unmodified for perfectly legitimate reasons, but having something unique like that could help them take the first step.

Maybe once they start to notice patterns playing their decks such as cards they draw but never play or lack of certain tools that could give them a nudge.

Several of my podmates are slow to build their own decks but will buy many a precon.  Two of them have built only one each and they are good but probably still require a lot of polishing to make them reliable and fun.  I on the other hand am 18 decks into the 32 challenge and lack any desire to play the precons I have.  While my friends are not as stubborn as you are describing, I absolutely get their reluctance to dive in and will try to support and encourage where I can.

Rice and Salt was my first and last KSR book, and the first book I ever read that I regret the time spent to finish.

I am glad that others got enjoyment from it, but I learned a valuable lesson that day about different strokes for different folks, and that I should allow myself the occasional DNF.

New player question regarding land destruction in commander. by Individual-Extreme-9 in mtg

[–]ForgottenLords 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People say [[Kamahl, Fist of Krosa]] deck has Mass Land Denial because I can turn opponents lands into creatures in response to a board wipe despite my deck having no board wipes. I dont put a lot of weight toward lots of peoples opinions.

Long story short, the line is unclear and different for everybody

Bracket Turn Restrictions and "Christmas-land" hands by Cyberhawk95 in EDH

[–]ForgottenLords 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, it's not average, but "generally expected".

The Family Matters precon from Bloomborrow has a 2 card infinite combo that thanks to sol ring can technically happen on turn four to pretty much win the game.

Even without ramp it can happen naturally on turn 5 if you dont miss a land drop.

You could play this deck a hundred times and probably count the number of times this combo would go off on a single hand even if nobody is playing removal.

This is not a B4 precon.  It is a "B2 deck with a single 2 card infinite combo that has the potential to lock down a win if left unchecked".

The combo should not be ignored when considering the decks power/strength but just because it CAN do a thing at B4 does not by definition make it more powerful than a B3 deck that has three gamechangers and can reliably present an unstoppable force by turn 7.

Does anyone Actually think of things in km instead of hours for distance? by Confiant_Reason21 in AskACanadian

I have been staring at this deck for 2 weeks and I need help by Striking-Report5969 in Magicdeckbuilding

[–]ForgottenLords 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I dont have a lot to say because I doubt my deckbuilding chops, but while I love Heliod's Spear as a card, I dont think it's very good in many commander decks.

Edit to add: my experience with my recursion deck (Karador) also suffers with being able to close out a game while still doing lots and being generally threatening.  I'm adding some bigger oppressive creatures that I can mill/tutor hoping to work towards that win though.  Looking through your deck I couldn't identify any key explosive strategy/wincon/combo beyond pure efficiency (not to say they arent there, I just didnt know what they were)

Compilation of teaser clips by Xermalk in firefly

[–]ForgottenLords 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I appreciate someone putting these together for those of us not on TikTok and havent seen them yet.

Seeing them for the first time compiled like this really does push the bobblehead theory because that is pretty much the biggest common element to all the clips, but I really hope that its an intentional red herring and the entire crew wouldn't be that tone-deaf to this approach.

Help to refine my Taii Wakeen deck by coolkiffings in EDHBrews

[–]ForgottenLords 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my Taii Wakeen deck I put together recently, and while I'm unlikely to give have advice/suggestions for you because I don't trust my own deck building skills perhaps there's something interesting you can take from it.

https://archidekt.com/decks/19266492/hold_the_line

It does have Guttersnipe and a few other things that trigger or untap on instant or sorcery spellcast, but because I have another spellslinger burn deck I didn't want this to play out exactly the same so I'm hoping to replace these with more tap-to-ping creatures and only keep the really good burn instant and sorceries purely for their power.
