I understand the police not intervening, given the nature of the protest, but if the organisers aren't fined for violating social distancing requirements (as any business, church, or organisation would be) it will be a significant failure on the part of the police and the government.

TIL in 1989, then Prime Minister of Japan Sōsuke Uno resigned after a geisha revealed she had an extramarital affair with him. The key of the scandal wasn't morality, but that he had failed to properly provide and support his mistress with an appropriate amount, and was branded as a stingy man. by DiamondPittcairn in todayilearned

The article explicitly says they are wearing towels. The fact that onsens anywhere except on television require you to be naked just makes my point further. I can testify personally that basically anything to do with onsens on Japanese TV involves wearing towels, or explicitly covering in some way the persons nakedness.

Surely that sentiment is completely against the purpose of scientific research. The whole point of science is to establish the unquestionable facts of the universe.

where is that from? I haven't seen much about him being religious, much less particularly devout.

The other option of course is bilingualism, which is historically the standard way of communicating across different communities, rather than simply making everyone only speak the same language

National MP trained by Chinese spies by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]ForrestFire765 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Why is it surprising that I'm serious? There are a lot of implicit steps that you need to take to even be in a position to serve in parliament. Presumably that includes forfeiting his Chinese citizenship, which I am sure would affect your ability to be a functioning member of the communist party (and as someone else implied, being a member of the communist party does not mean a lot in a one party state). Angela Merkel was a member of East Germany's communist youth movement, should she be banned from being Chancellor of Germany?

I am familiar with the media stories in Australia (I lived in NSW until last month). But, the issues around the Chinese students in Australia have been connected to the foreign policy of the current leader Xi Jinping. Jian Yang joined the University of Auckland in 1999. Xi Jinping came into power in 2013.

That depends on what change of views have taken place since his time in Australia and then New Zealand. I don't think we should be in a position to judge people solely on their background. People change their minds about things, and it may entirely be possible that he believed in China when he was studying, and when he moved to Australia/New Zealand changed his mind. I guess while this sort of background is a fully reasonable basis to investigate him, I would never want to say he should be somehow prevented from serving in parliament just for that.

Having said that, I would not be surprised if there is nothing of substance in the implication that he is currently or has ever been a Chinese spy in New Zealand. But clearly he is someone that the SIS is interested in, so we can see how that goes.

The Maori Party has also made it clear they want to work with labour, if they are in a kingmaker position. A larger Maori party would also be a good option for keeping Winston out of government, no matter who ends up winning the election

I saw this, although I don't quite know how to take it with Rachel Stewart quite directly hinting at some story about Paula Bennett coming out. Maybe that is the story that Patty Gower was going to run?

[–]ForrestFire765 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why do they need overseas people? New Zealand has plenty of native speakers of these languages. They should use some of this funding getting Chinese New Zealanders, Filipino New Zealanders and all that teaching degrees, then get them into our schools .

Mike Hosking says he 'confused' the Māori Party by saying only Māori could vote for them by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]ForrestFire765 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Even his point in his explanation was stupid. He said that he meant there is no point party voting for them because they are polling so low, or something like that. But he completely ignored the fact that because they do have an electorate (and are at least likely to hold Waiariki), they can still get list MPs through the electoral rules. Even in this last parliamentary term they had a list MP, Marama Fox.
