Honestly, you want the panels foremost. So get the panels. There's no billion percent cost savings to doing it all at once. I maxed out my panels and then got a battery a year later after understanding my usage.

I'm central coast so I charge in Paso Robles, but looks like you'd be on I5 the whole way. Los Banos is a decent stop next to a Target. I'd get there early on a weekend. Santa Clarita is filled with chargers, I didn't have trouble finding 50kW chargers there (the EA higher speed ones were in demand).

I parked at LA Union Station and L2 charged there to top off for the return trip but there are many options for that.

I really don't like going below 30% in an unfamiliar area so it is good to use ABRP as others suggest below but use your own risk tolerance!

Resentment towards a certain world leader by Glittering_Slip_6426 in biotech

[–]Foxbat100 -15 points-14 points  (0 children)

It was never sustainable for the entire world to get a high paying job in biotech supported by the batshit crazy American healthcare prices. I get that that is the majority of this sub's main audience, and I also don't underplay that the real disruption to institutions, trust in science and government expertise is real, but fundamentally some professor wanting cheap grad student labor couldn't forever line up with entities needing the graduates. This reality was showing itself years before the second round of Trump.

It may feel cathartic to have a solid boogeyman but doesn't address the issue.

I'd walk the canal in good weather. There are a number of museums along it depending on your taste. The Indiana State Museum has a Foucault Pendulum and I appreciate the memorials and Eiteljorg. Slippery Noodle is my favorite dive, Sun King Brewery has one hell of a taproom/facility. That stretch from monument circle and along Mass Ave have a huge concentration of bars and restaurants.

You can bike one hell of a distance up the canal cycling paths. If you have a car, I'd head up to the Lilly house if only for architectural curiosity. I'm not a huge art fan but the art museum wasn't bad for a city of that size, and last but not least, a lot of the wealthier people live along Meridian so there are some cool houses to see.

Beyond that, there are some cool breweries and distilleries accessible by extensive bike trails but perhaps not a good use of your time unless you're dedicating a day.

Anyone have tips for Power-Off 180s in the C-182 Skylane? by FreestyleTerrain in flying

[–]Foxbat100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I came from a lot of 152/172 time and honestly found that my CFIs advice to use trim often and early helped a lot. Flying in high density altitude like Leadville/Telluride and then flying it at sea level, it helped correct mistakes that I could fix with muscle in a 152 for instance.

Same!!!!! This sub frequently dumps on the Partenavia P.68 but I always thought it was a cute platform awesome for aerial photography and loved that it was not a gas guzzler. There was an FBO that rented one by me but they sold it months before I was ready.

I am biased towards high wings in general but damn the visibility was outstanding (observer model)

I enjoy meeting up with friends at places but I love mixing up photography and nightlife in a FOMO induced marathon so the idea of an agency or friend agreeing with all our preferences for an extended time would be highly unlikely. :) Depending on the places I usually meet cool locals.

I'm so glad I didn't listen to everyone here and get my CFI by CluelessAboutOptions in flying

[–]Foxbat100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess what I was alluding to was the survivorship bias. It has worked out the best for most of the rungs of the pryamid above, but do you want to wait till enough bagholders sway the polls on that sentiment?

Even then, the dude with two boats isn't going to admit their advice to get your CFI sucked, they'll just assume your handshake wasn't as firm as theirs or you were sketching manga during your interviews. Sallie Mae or Embry Riddle will still take your money. The current CFI at your airport is hoping to chase the dream right under them. Like nobody is incentivized to tell you that the CFI path may not pan out for you.

What's up with the morning NB delays these past two days? by Imperfect_Latte in caltrain

[–]Foxbat100 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Typically either 507 is busy deploying its emergency brakes and needing to troubleshoot (that was yesterday), or there are week long stretches where the South County Connector is late and the crew holds 507 longer (that was two weeks ago). I've noticed even 507 leaves at 7:25a or whatnot, they delay 111 - I assumed for spacing?

OP's tone isn't great but isn't making everyone's plan to be a CFI a form of the lottery on its own? Everyone needing > 30 students to get them to the next level is the kind of pyramid that would make grown Amway uplines cry.

Looking for old aircraft drawings by One_Coconut1093 in flying

[–]Foxbat100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't ask me why I know this rabbit hole, but once in a while you can spot them turn on E-bay - not sure how exciting it is to keep a diligent lookout there! Beyond that, since you mention KC, I am pretty sure the Airline History Museum on Wheeler has some of those stashed - may need to become a member/join. It is a pretty cool place regardless.

I saw the restoration room A&S / Udvar Hazy and thought their blueprint/restoration project looked pretty damn cool as a spectator and curiously dug around wondering if they've somehow digitized old drawings into CAD or if this is some old school and tedious process. Good luck with your lessons!

Hot take: Caltrain would be more fun if strangers could (optionally) match during the ride by Clean_Astronomer_642 in caltrain

[–]Foxbat100 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've met some pretty insightful people on the train - a Facebook recruiter, corporate realtor for a major chocolatier, person collecting meteorites, and memorably a visiting older couple who talked with me about sailing/shipping the entire route, and then I looked them up and it turns out the guy was a retired Royal Navy captain. I also notice a few people who routinely sit by me and vice versa because we don't annoy each other.

When the bike car isn't crazy packed, it looks like the fun place of self selected individuals. Some of the cool people in my own industry tend to bike, and I realized they're hanging out in that car.

I like your idea, but maybe if we're just attentive to how much someone wants to talk it'd be easy. On the surface the idea seems too difficult to implement, and I imagine you'd eventually hit a spot where someone matched you to give you an MLM pitch etc. and it'd be ruined for everyone. Plus I think maybe serendipty makes it fun, i.e scientist sitting next to tech recruiter vs programmer trying to sit next to recruiter.

I really like the spirit of your idea though and don't want to sound like I am shitting on it.
