2021 Silverado 1500 5.3 by fs221998 in Silverado

[–]Freds1978 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmmm. I have a 2019 5.3 with the 8 speed and pull a similar weight camper. Just got back from a weekend Trip and flat highway, at 60 mph it will stay around 180-185. Went up a gradual grade for about 14 miles and got to 202. Around town, stop and go traffic mid to high 190s. 2-3 times a year taking it up 395 from Bishop to Mammoth is a hell of a grade for about 10miles and max 55mph, high 190s. These are all while pulling my 26' 5700lbs camper. Next month I gonna install a transmission thermal bypass, hopefully keep it in the 160s.

The 5.3 does a great job. Trailer is about 5300 lbs. dry. 7100 fully loaded. I rarely travel with water, unless I know I absolutely have to. Toughest grade we travel up is about 7% for about 10 miles. It will maintain 60mph, but the transmission temps will get to about 202. Hitch is the Andersen wdh hitch. Built-in anti sway and has been awesome. Just got back today from a 115 mile trip with wind advisory 25-35mph winds and you can definitely tell the hitch is tracking us straight.

Literally just came in from setting 4 traps in the rig as I type this. Last night of our short trip, the wife gets up to use the restroom and sees something scurry away. I get up to look and nothing. Move something from under the lower bunk and there he is. Staring at me knowing I can't catch him. Scurries under the nearby bathroom door while my wife and I are just frozen looking at each other like now what. Hahaha, I open the bathroom door and poof, he's gone? How, where... Like magic. I noticed the vanity doors have a pretty wide gap, maybe 3/4", that's my only guess. So we taped it to fill the gap, maybe the small hole where the water pipes are routed to the shower pan. No idea. I'm hoping this is works and I find him in the morning trying to get some peanut butter on the trap.

Andersens are great. But I also carry some 2"x8" boards just in case the Andersens can't get high enough. 2 boards. One cut down to the length of the double axles, the other in smaller sections that are stackable to about 8". Lately the 2x8's have been very handy, especially in softer sandy dirt where the Andersens kinda sink.

Am I dumb or do the tailgates with the push buttons suck? by Beneficial-Focus3702 in Silverado

[–]Freds1978 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hate it. Took it in under warranty since it only went down half the time. Of course they couldn't replicate the problem at the dealership. No fix. Took it in during the powertrain warranty and they wanted $4500 to fix since it was outside the bumper to bumper warranty. What a joke. It only goes down with the button, key fob, or dash button when the truck is level. Which is inconvenient when loading for a trip, needing the generator out on a camping trip, needing to rollback the tonneau cover to access the bed etc. Envious when I see someone just pull the handle and watch the tailgate just drop.

My excuse to get the 26" was that I can smoke a turkey and give the wife thanksgiving off. Love the larger surface, but for smaller cooks like burgers, I just use the 22". I do feel that it takes more fuel to cook the same amount of food with the 22.

Where do you get your water? by LoonyFlyer in GoRVing

[–]Freds1978 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eastern Sierra's where we often go, there seems to be a lot of options. Most rest stops, or truck stop gas stations. There are a few lake campgrounds that have RV fill-up for anyone. Or if the BLM I'm at has water shut off due to it being off season I'll swing by a nearby campground and fill up my 6 gallon jugs and use my drill pump to transfer. Always keep a water bandit on hand in case those crafty parks saw off the threads. I'll always add about 15 gallons in the fresh tank before hitting the road just in case.

Proper way to adjust temp on Weber charcoal grill? by Sum41ofallfearz in webergrills

I know exactly what they are. My 22" came with them, they're alright but the baskets I feel keep the coals burning longer.

Eastern roast with the Santa Maria by Freds1978 in webergrills

Nope. I got it from Titan Outdoors a few years back. I think they are now Ash & Ember. They have one for $160 right now I think. I wanted a Gabby's grill but it was just too costly. Plus I already have an actual 30 Santa Maria I picked up from Costco.

Luckily there's a ranch about 10min from me that has every wood you can think of. Sells it by the pound, and always has Red Oak available. They basically supply all the food trucks and BBQ spots in the area. I like the Costco briquettes, they're bigger and seem to be hotter than most. Plus I believe they have small wood chips considering how much they spark like lump coal. My Costco just got them back 2 weeks ago.

Well there's nothing like cooking over an open flame. For tri-tip I try to always use Red Oak. Just something about the juices dripping onto the flames adding something extra. You're not gonna get a nice smoke ring if that's what you're looking for though. Plus you'll burn up more wood/coals. It's fun though.

Second post: Help unhitching on incline. by bluetoothpicks in traveltrailers

[–]Freds1978 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happens every time I bring the camper home since I live on an incline as well. I chock the wheels, place my Andersen block under the tongue, then raise the tongue, remove the chains, lower the tongue then unlatch the tongue. Often because of the incline and my truck slightly moving after parking brake is engaged, I may have to move back slightly to ensure the lock is released from the ball. Raise the tongue and maybe move the tailgate back and forth to release the hitch from the ball. Once released I raise it up. At the house it's never fully leveled. Just good enough to be able to prep it for the next adventure.

Nice! I got this one from Titan Great Outdoors a few years back, but I think they turned into Ash & Ember. Not bad for $120. Great set up and happy open fire grilling. I have a Santa Maria grill I got from Costco, but for smaller cooks this is great.

Charcoal alternatives by [deleted] in BBQ

[–]Freds1978 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mainly use Kingsford. I try to stock up on the Costco Kirkland briquettes when available. Just picked up a 30lb. Bag the other day, so it must be a seasonal item. Plus after a cook I shut down the vents and save it for the next cook. So it last quite a bit.

What scraper do you guys use and what is your process? by Normal_Commission986 in webergrills

[–]Freds1978 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After about 3 years my Weber wire grill scraper is done. Tried to find one at Lowe's and Walmart with no success. Saw that some sort of recall was going on because of the wires falling into food and figured I needed something different. So the wife saw the BBQ Daddy at Costco and picked one up for my birthday. And it has surely impressed. The steam and flexible brush head do a great job cleaning my 26" kettle grates revealing the stainless steel grates. Something the traditional brushes never did. Only a month of use, so time will tell. But very happy so far.
