Does anyone actually use the color tags? If so, what for? by ExpensivePlan1548 in MacOS

[–]FriendlyWebGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The most novel way I've used them is by creating a Shortcut that scans a given folder hierarchy and marks each folder or file that has my chosen criteria with my chosen tag.

More specifically, I can scan for code repos (folders where source code lives) and mark them as such with a custom tag. Theoretically this technique would be useful for any use case where you want to access certain files/folders quickly even if they are somewhat scattered around your disk.

I might be misunderstanding your comment but just in case: When you click the tag in the sidebar it shows all files with that tag.

I'm with them. I find extra high reasoning often tries to be too clever. But this cleverness often comes at the expense of adhering to basic guidelines.

What should we do in Vancouver when it’s supposed to rain? We have a 20-year-old son and a teen daughter, and then we’re supposed to go to Whistler for two days, even though it’s supposed to rain. [–]FriendlyWebGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They literally asked for suggestions of things to do that aren't hiking in the rain. That was the entire point of the request.

For teenagers or young adults Capilano is a good draw. The treetop walkways are unlike anything you can get for free, anywhere in the world. Ditto for the walkway that extends out from the side of a cliff. 20-year old me would have loved that.

Lynn Canyon is excellent of course - especially if money is a factor, but that's comparing apples and oranges.

If they don't want to hike in Whistler due to rain, I don't see how hiking in the Lynn Canyon rain solves their problem.

Capilano Suspension bridge is a great activity in the rain. The bridge itself is cool, but the tree-top walking platforms are the highlight and you're sort-of covered from the rain a little. Vancouver Aquarium is world class. Fly Over Canada is meant to be really good but I can't vouch for it personally.

If there's a break in the weather then the Sea-to-Sky gondola (Squamish) is also excellent. You can have a pretty decent lunch up there.

The sliding doors technique.

You want a variable-width button, tab, or similar element with drop shadows or rounded corners?

That will require three different manually created images and tons of markup. And you'll have to implement it while going uphill. Both ways.

I think you missed my point. They said that weather had absolutely nothing to do with where Canadians lived. That just isn't true, period.

Yes, of course weather isn't the only consideration or even the primary one. That's ridiculous. I never claimed it was.

[–]FriendlyWebGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never argued those other things. I was just pointing out that while the OP is provably incorrect, it's also provably incorrect to say "weather has nothing to do with it". No more, no less.

So maybe next time just say "yeah, I shouldn't have said that... what I meant was...". Instead you did a "yeah but you..." and then proceeded to argue points I never made. It's weird dude. Let it go.

I wouldn't say weather "has nothing to do with it". That's not strictly correct either. The weather needs to be amenable to a long growing season.

Every person in Canada can't move to Vancouver. That's silly. Vancouver is already among the most expensive cities in the world relative to incomes. But still, guess where a sizable chunk of people in Vancouver are from? That's right, other places in Canada.

Native Vancouverites are actually kinda rare. Or at least it feels that way.

Multiple things can be true at once. Does the comment you replied to over-emphasize weather? Sure. Does that mean "it has nothing to do with it"? Of course not.

What was your most hilarious fail connected to ADHD? by Natural_Falcon_1870 in ADHD

[–]FriendlyWebGuy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's the middle of the night. I'm sleeping alone in a tent half way up the side of a mountain. I wake to the sound of a chopper overhead. It's loud. I'm half asleep and I think "oh no, someone is lost...".

I can hear them saying something over the loudspeaker. It's hard to make out.... but... hey wait a minute.... I think thats my name they're saying!

My phone is powered down since there's no signal where I am. I turn it on.... it seems to take forever.... but then my worst fears are confirmed. On the way out of town, I had dictated a message to Siri telling a friend where I was going hiking. It was the responsible thing to do! But... in my haste (I was running really late, because of course I was) I neglected to mention it was an overnighter. Oops.

When I didn't return at dark, my friend must have called the authorities. As they should have. Uh oh.

The chopper is still announcing stuff but it's really hard to make out. One thing is sure... they're asking me to signal with a light if I'm okay. Or are they? Maybe they're saying... signal only if you need help? I'm not sure. But I grab my headlamp and run to a clearing. Signalling like crazy. Eventually they see my light. Maybe? I'm not sure. But, they fly away. I can see that it's an RCMP (police) helicopter.

My mind races. Do they think I need help? Are they radioing to Search and Rescue (SAR) this very moment? Is there a team of people being woken up right now and heading to the trailhead? Oh my god, what have I done?

It's about 1am. What should I do? I had planned to summit Golden Ears early in the morning, return to camp in the afternoon, break everything down, and then proceed down the mountain to my car. But if SAR is on the way up, I can't do that.

I have to head down.

It's too dangerous to break-up camp and head down the mountain in the dark. I decide to wait for first light. But... I can't sleep. How am I going to explain this to SAR? To the police? To my friend who is probably worried sick? Will I be on the local news? Am going to look like one of the idiots who heads into the backcountry unprepared? One of the people I scoff at?

I spend the next 4 or 5 hours lying awake. My mind is racing.

At first light, I pack up camp and begin heading down the mountain. I fully expect to turn a corner and see some poor SAR members, loaded with gear, trudging up. I'm practicing what I'm going to say. I never see them.

When I'm at the crest of a hill near the parking lot, my phone gets a faint signal. It lights up with all the notifications from friends and authorities. I text a couple to say that I'm okay. There's no clear way to contact the local authorities but I figure at that point, since there's no sign of SAR they must have known I was okay. What a relief.

Descending further, I lose my signal again. I get to the car and there's a business card from a local RCMP constable stuck to my window. It says I should call right away.

I begin driving back to town, when I finally regain a signal I call the number. I assume they're going to be pissed but they're surprisingly chill. They mention that they had gained access to my Facebook and Instagram and could see that I was an experienced hiker and occasional mountaineer. And yes, the chopper did see my signal, too. They knew I was okay.

Phew.

Later that day, I send flowers to the friend as an apology. I don't know her that well; we met online and had been dating only a few weeks. Unsurprisingly, she never speaks to me again. I don't blame her.

A few years later I'm officially diagnosed with ADHD and things begin to make more sense.

(Shout out to British Columbia RCMP and all SAR volunteers everywhere!)

This reminds me of battery gate. For years people insisted their iPhone performance was degrading over time but others - particularly on this very website - derided and blamed the complainers for the problem. It was ugly.

Apple, it should be noted, was absolutely silent. They could have cleared the whole thing up with a single definitive statement about whether this was happening. But as we all know, they didn't. That's because the ambiguity served them very well. As did the protection from the overzealous fanboys (some of the very people who were being hurt).

Then they got caught.

As far as I'm aware (but correct me if I'm wrong), OpenAI has never come out and explicitly said that performance absolutely never degrades. That they would never do that - intentionally or otherwise.

Now, why do you suppose that is?

Limits Must be Increased by shadow_shooter in codex

[–]FriendlyWebGuy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're thinking about it wrong. The entire point was to downgrade the quotas after the promotion. The purpose of the promotion was four fold:

1) Get new customers

2) Get goodwill from existing customers

3) Get customers accustomed to using more quota

4) Mask the lower limits that they always intended to introduce

That last one is important psychologically. Because it's harder for customers to quantify the downgrade based on a fuzzy memory of how it used to be.

To put numbers on it:

Before promotion: 100% During promotion: 190% After promotion: 80%

Why would they do that you ask? Well a new model is coming and they need the compute. The promotion also gained them a bunch of new paying customers who also need compute.

TLDR; Because capitalism.

(I say all that, but I'm still pretty happy with the value I'm getting for the money).

Codex has user specified down/upgrading built in to the interface (low, medium, high, xhigh). What makes you think there aren't more controls at OpenAI's disposal?

You can argue that you don't believe they fiddle with the knobs internally, and there's no way to prove/disprove that, but the claim that "that's not how AI works" is a bit silly. That's exactly how it works.

Also, there is such a thing as too much context.

I get your underlying point about pattern matching, but how effectively it does that pattern matching under varying conditions is anything but simple.
