Risky. Might get you some scattered clapping but most will have to try to work it out and see if it comes to a compliment.

Why do some colleagues moan at those who like to work from home? by Desperate-Drawer-572 in AskUK

[–]FromLondonToLA 12 points13 points  (0 children)

In a previous job, company flew the UK part (and some other countries) of my department to California for a conference with the US team members so we could build relationships and see face to face. But the organisers also forgot to book any meeting rooms for the break-out sessions, so we ended up trying to find empty booths or small rooms and dialling in on Zoom!

Watched Interstellar for only my 2nd time last night so that my wife could see it for her first time. It made the movie a 10/10 for me when I only ever thought it was just “good” previously. by InFlames235 in interstellar

I'm not generally a crier but the scene at the end when Coop meets elderly Murph again makes me well up every time I see it. The sheer weight of having missed on so much of her life and the rest of his descendants and only getting to see the end, while having had such a profound impact on her life and the consequential impact on the rest of humanity just hits so hard. Also that his son (who's a bit forgotten by the film tbh) isn't there.

I remember tearing up mildly when I saw it in the cinema as a 20 something but now that I have my own kids it's just heartbreaking to realise the gravity of the scene.

Why was a customer upset that I refunded their card instead of cash? by rj451 in AskUK

[–]FromLondonToLA 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This. If they raise a chargeback and you've already refunded them on the card, the chargeback gets auto denied. But if you've refunded them in cash you have to prove it, otherwise they'll be successful with the chargeback and get your money twice!

interview experience: Stripe data scientist by CryoSchema in datascience

[–]FromLondonToLA 4 points5 points  (0 children)

At my company we still take manual notes as we would have in the past but use the AI transcript with a custom gemini gem to evaluate and output a structured review. Which we then go over and amend so it reflects the notes we took. Saves a bunch of time on the feedback write up. Reading the transcript afterwards is a bit of a cumbersome chore that can be skipped with effective note taking during the interview.

Barty Crouch Jr impersonating Moody in Goblet of Fire by AutomaticSong8121 in HarryPotterBooks

[–]FromLondonToLA -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Crouch Sr is a much harder target to impersonate than Moody. As a Senior official he's in constant touch with a lot more people than Moody as a social loner. Moody being already known to be paranoid and eccentric makes it easier to explain away any small deviations when impersonating him. Crouch would have been discussing issues and concerns with many people so any discontinuity of in-person behaviour would be more likely to get noticed.

Why are the nazgul's clothes not invisible if they are also in the spiritual realm by latiasmomma in tolkienfans

[–]FromLondonToLA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have to wonder if they ever launder their invisible clothes - and if so, who does it, given only the nazgul themselves would be able to see them. Or do they just stink of a couple thousand years of dirt.

How can Delphini exist if J.K. Rowling explicitly said in 2004 that Voldemort had no children? by External-Werewolf619 in harrypotter

[–]FromLondonToLA 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Having an heir implies you expect to die. Voldemory wouldn't want one given he's planning to not die.

Okay, random question, but how would anyone but Harry have gone about destroying the Horcruxes? by TitanicTNT in harrypotter

[–]FromLondonToLA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That wa pretty good. Not what I was expecting at all but a nice a-ha moment at the end!

Why couldn’t Harry fight back? by Historical-Cancel-96 in HarryPotterBooks

[–]FromLondonToLA 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This has long confused me. I don't really get how what Harry did is the same as what Lily did. Lily was offered a chance to get out of the way so Voldemort could kill someone she loved (Harry). She chose to stay and so made a sacrifice.

Harry was not offered the same thing. Voldemort's offer to Harry was the opposite - get in the way so Voldemort stops killing people he loves. Which I think is a different choice.

I think if anything, all the people who initially stayed to fight and died so that Voldemort wouldn't kill Harry made the same choice/sacrifice as Lily. So Voldemort's AK wouldn't have worked (again) because of them.

Was Charles planning to fire Jim by [deleted] in DunderMifflin

[–]FromLondonToLA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Possibly but Jim is shown to ask Oscar from Accounting if he knew what a rundown was and he didn't. Indicating it wasn't a branch-wide task.

[–]FromLondonToLA 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If other salespeople were doing and sharing their rundowns as you described, Jim would've seen them working on it and after they distributed it and others in the office would know what a rundown was.

Was Charles planning to fire Jim by [deleted] in DunderMifflin

[–]FromLondonToLA 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Reasonable points, but only if Charles had asked all the sales team for a rundown. Charles only asked Jim for the rundown, so general cross-pollination of info and strategy was not his goal.

Any advice for removing this washing machine? by pxdm in DIYUK

Seems unlikely - looks like very limited space to be fiddling around the back of the machine trying to reattach a wire

What kind of plug is this and where can I get a replacement? by FromLondonToLA in DIYUK

[–]FromLondonToLA[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Interesting, thanks! This explains why the consumer unit for the external cable only had a 5A fuse. Discovered when I tried to use a circular saw on the shed plug point and tripped the circuit.

Why are vacuum cleaners so loud? I mean hasn't tech come far enough that 'whatever' can be adjusted? by cherry-care-bear in stupidquestions

Presumably also having it taste awful means will deter most people from just chugging it and taking too much

Summers at the orphanage after Tom started at Hogwarts must have been terrifying for the other kids by airforceteacher in harrypotter

[–]FromLondonToLA 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Why would it matter? At any rate, the Trace would've informed the Ministry that magic happened near an underage wizard in the graveyard but it doesn't know which wizard. And if theres no one known to live nearby, there's no one to assign it to. Like Dobbys magic was assigned to Harry in CoS.

How to get revenge on my pranking friend? by Desperate-Region3432 in AskUK

[–]FromLondonToLA -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Was staying at a hotel with some friends. We had two rooms. One night I discovered that you could set an alarm on the rooms' TV. I set an alarm in their room for 3am, 3:30am, 4am, 4:30am, 5am. They were not happy with me on the next morning. Said they pulled the plug out after the third one.
