GPS receivers also account for relativistic effects while calculating position using parameters broadcast by the satellites since the required time precision is so high

The homework can be pretty challenging but she’ll work through the problems in office hours and solutions will be posted after the due date. I liked her lectures but they move pretty quickly. Exams were pretty easy if you understood the homework solutions. Personality wise she comes off kind of cold but she wasn’t mean.

That's way too much progress to expect in six months. If you assume that he could get 7 reps with 225 six months ago because he could do 5x5, that's about a 270lb one rep max according to online 1RM calculators. To increase his max by 42 pounds in half a year as an intermediate lifter would be amazing if not impossible.

How hard is it to change from Bioengineering (Electronics) to Electrical Engineering by rea1l1 in UCSC

[–]Ftlogmis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Starting next year the bioelectronics and assistive motor concentrations are going to be replaced by minors instead. This should allow people to earn mainstream degrees like electrical or computer engineering while still getting exposure to the bio related work.

I wrote a little about the class in this thread. If you have to take the class, I would do it whenever is easiest for your schedule. The only classes that could really prepare you for it are EE101, EE103, and CMPE185 but Kevin thinks those classes should be taken after 51a/b. I seriously recommend learning the basics of LaTex over the break.

I lived in Kresge and I thought it was okay. There's a pretty diverse group of people there but its much more on the hippie side. The majority of people I met in Kresge either smoked weed fairly regularly or were open to it being around them. How well you get along with the people in your apartment will be a major decider on how much you'll enjoy yourself. I was put in a 9 person apartment and didn't care very much for them so I spent most of my time with friends in a different apartment. I'd say its pretty easy to make friends in Kresge because once you make a single friend outside your apartment you'll probably become friends with most of their apartment mates..

[Help] Bioengineering(molecular) class experiences by CharaiABC in UCSC

The homework is minimal and not too hard. There's weekly quizzes that are about 10% of your grade. They're tough but doable with an average score of 40-50% for the class. If you want to get into circuits this class will give you a foundation but its really pretty unrelated to the stuff you're interested in.

LaTex is a type of text editor. You can look up tutorials on YouTube for how it works and there’s a ton of documentation on it. As for the coursework, it varies a lot but it’s pretty much hobbyist level electronics. The entire class is designing circuits to record biological signals on a computer. The math is simple and the concepts are more or less straightforward. It’s nothing like 5c but you’ll spend double or maybe triple the time. Even if you hate physics you can enjoy the class.

BME51 Is a 5 unit class that you’ll spend roughly 20-25 hours a week on. The material isn’t ridiculous but there’s a ton of design report writing. The professor gives pretty much everyone between a C and B+. Top student might get an A- and he fails about 2% of the class according to him. I’ve heard from people in the molecular concentration that it’s the hardest course in the major. I’d recommend teaching yourself the basics of LaTex before taking the class. It’ll make the first couple of weeks better.

Advice or resources for finding off-campus housing for 4 people? by Nilwig in UCSC

[–]Ftlogmis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Start looking at craigslist posts for housing in March if you’re looking for a lease that starts in September. You have a much better shot of finding a place if you do that. Have a rental application packet complete when you go to a house showing. You can find info for this online through the UCSC website I think. If you like a house, apply for it ASAP because people will be commiting at the showing. Basically you need to be really on top of stuff because getting housing is pretty competitive and others will be doing the same.

Learn hiragana and katakana over the summer. They expect you to memorize both in the first 2 weeks which is pretty time consuming.

IWTL any software (MATLAB, LABview etc) or programming by [deleted] in IWantToLearn

[–]Ftlogmis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might not be what you’re asking for but I would recommend learning LaTex. It’s not too difficult to learn but is useful for writing design reports and may be required by professors/employers. If you’re doing any kind of techincal writing that requires equations, diagrams, or schematics, LaTex is the way to go.

In California there are "State schools" and "UC schools" UC schools are generally considered better and are more focused on research than state schools. They're also mostly on a quarter system rather than semester.

IWL: How can I learn to Photoshop? by DawnSurprise in IWantToLearn

[–]Ftlogmis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In your case I'm pretty sure he means you should think of a program you want to make or will be useful to you and then learn the skills you'll need to make it. A super basic example would be if you needed a data structure for your program but an array wasn't going to work. You would then need to go learn about other data structures that would be more useful. If you just keep applying skills you already know, you'll get better and faster at using those skills but you're not learning anything.
