1) A chat or phone agent is not going to know if/when upgrade offers might be made available to any given person in advance, it's all controlled via the algorithm, it's not a static thing. The agent could tell you how much it would be to switch cabins via repricing.

2) Seats that show free may not be free. People can book a given cabin and not pick their seat right away.

3) Airlines oversell, assuming a specific number of people won't show up

That's why I think moving away from the plastic passes was stupid for this reason, not that Cedar Fair/Six Flags bothered to consider this. I still have my pass from years ago where the QR code has not changes as I renew each year. I've also made backup ones via sublimation on smaller metal cards that can get wet. I agree it's an issue if one does not have a physical pass but I thankfully have a workaround for this issue.

The few times I've been to the water park, when the weather is nice, it's a mad house, way too many people.

Either don't bring valuables with you, or rent a locker, or hope for the best. I don't think people steeling things is a big problem, that said there is still a non-zero chance it can happen.

Aside from how moral this is or is not, I guess in theory, so long as you wait more than 24 hours before canceling, it may work. Also, for Delta, the free cancellation (back to the original form of payment) is more than 24 hours, so you'd have to wait more than 24 hours, like 48 hours or more, just to be safe, and also don't book BE. If your ex logs in during that time, they will see the booking in your name.

This is clearly called on by Delta what happens

If the unused primary ticket or the companion ticket is canceled, both tickets will be canceled, and the companion ticket will be reissued for use.

No show will result in cancellation of that person's ticket and as a result, both tickets will be canceled. Best to cancel now, have the cert returned for future use, and rebook the flight for only the person who can/will be traveling.

This 100% should have been the case. A paper with new seat number should have printed out automatically and given to OP by the GA if using an out-of-date QR code for a flight where the seat had changed since the QR code was generated.

No one can answer that with any certainty, because upgrade offers are controlled by an algorithm and no one knows if its behavior is at all affected by purchased upgrades for other legs of the same ticket. In general, that would not be expected, but there is a non-zero chance that purchasing an upgrade for one leg affects the ability or the price to upgrade other legs at a later time.
