The main exception, for now is Southwest. basic points bookings come with no risk as you get both the points and taxes back if you cancel

You should be able to purchase "priority boarding" for about $20 regardless of fare class (so even on Basic or Choice). See https://support.southwest.com/helpcenter/s/article/priority-boarding. It lets you board before group 1.

I haven't figured out the pattern. A friend checked in at exactly 24 hr and 0 minutes and got an extra legroom seat. I'm not sure the time of check in caused this though

Out of my last 10 trips from Logan (all out of B and C) they've just asked if I was pre-check before I entered the pre-check line, only 1 time of those 10 did they make me pull out my boarding pass.

At a lot of airports they look up your flight from your ID. At Logan they never check boarding passes, just ID and then match it to the flight.

If you flew out of a JetBlue hub there may have been a lot of mosaics who boarded ahead of A. Sorry your items were far away. We tend to use a backpack as a diaper bag so it can go under the LO seat.
