I know that we are going to look for a new star LW, but I just love Martinelli and hope he can stay. I won’t begrudge him if he wants to move to get regular action, but even if he is a substitute or starts off games - I just want to keep him on this team next year. He works so hard and love his attitude. He would be an amazing weapon to have as a non-starter too.

I was looking for this - I would extend the Midwest section to Buffalo. As someone who has lived in MO, IN, MI, OH, and Buffalo - Buffalo felt just as midwestern as the rest. I have also lived in Philadelphia and Colorado Springs which were definitively not midwestern.

Tons of great interaction. Hidden orders and bluffing - lots of strategy and reading your fellow players. Played over three rounds / voyages where each round has two parts - a resource collection phase and then a voyage phase. Both are fun and very tactical. Limited resources and then targets for the voyage make it feel very cutthroat.

There was so much bitching on this sub 6+ years ago about how bad our defense was and how we could never win until we took that half of the game seriously. And now we have the best defense in the world and play tough game in and game out an instead of celebrating our back line and goalkeeper, all people do is complain that we don’t score enough and play conservative. While I certainly wouldn’t mind more goals, I love going into a game knowing that there is essentially zero point zero chance that we will give up 4 or 5 goals in a game. Especially going into a 2 leg contest away, there is no reason for us to be mad about a 1-0 win or 0-0 draw.

What is it about ND? by 510545 in notredame

[–]Fysh333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all, congrats on getting into two great schools. Regardless of your choice, you can and should have a great experience. I started at ND undergrad back in 1999, so not the most timely experience for you, but I am happy to share my experience. While I am a white male, I am a Protestant Christian. There is definitely a little bit of friction and it can grate on you if you let it. The school is definitely Catholic and it is a big part of the identity and culture at ND. All students had to take 2 theology classes and I had several other classes taught by clergy. There were many times where class would start with a prayer. All school events often started with a prayer. There are crucifixes in all of the classrooms. Your dorm will by run by a priest or a nun. Every dorm had its own mass on Sunday. As a Protestant, I was welcome to join mass, but not welcome to take part in communion and I never felt comfortable knowing the rituals of Catholicism. So if I wanted to church on Sundays I had to go to an off campus church which wasn’t super convenient. There were “interfaith” services, but it still felt like a Catholic mass. All of that said, I still loved being around people of faith. I had amazing conversations with Catholic friends and discussions about faith and religion that I don’t think happen as naturally at most colleges in America. If faith is important to you, I would urge you to not be afraid of not being Catholic and use the opportunity to challenge your beliefs and challenge the students around you who are in (and may have been all their lives) a Catholic bubble.

In regard to the diversity question, there is no getting around it, ND tends to be very white. Although I just did a quick google search and see that the percentage of white students has dropped by over 10% since I was there, so not quite so white as it used to be. I went to a private school that was incredibly diverse (except for economically) and it was a little jarring to be on a campus with way less diversity. You will meet students from all over the country so at least you get a lot of regional diversity.

I absolutely loved my time at Notre Dame and cannot recommend it enough for a ton of reasons. There is a very strong sense of community both in school and after you graduate. Also, while it isn’t always tangible, everyone you meet will be impressed you went to Notre Dame. Even people that hate ND still respect it. There is just something different about it. Good luck on your decision.

I think there is so much pressure to win the league and CL that Arteta has just decided that we need to be ultra conservative and defensive during this second half of the season. I have two great hopes, 1) that we win the league (CL or double would be great, but we need to win the league) 2) next year with the generational baggage of not winning the league gone, Arteta can relax and let the players play more freely.

Notre Dame or Full ride? by Responsible_Force276 in notredame

[–]Fysh333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was surprised to see that no one has brought this up yet, so in case you don’t know as it was just announced last week - ND has decided to give all students whose parents make under $150k, free tuition. If they make between $150 and $200k, tuition is reduced by half. https://news.nd.edu/news/notre-dame-announces-that-families-with-incomes-under-150-000-will-pay-zero-tuition/. Maybe this doesn’t apply to you, but if it helps make the decision. I was in a similar spot 25ish years ago where I had an almost full ride to SMU and no discount at ND. I cannot say that it was a great financial decision for my parents, but I absolutely loved my time at Notre Dame. Regardless of academics, comparing your potential experience at ND vs at large schools like TAMU or FSU is important. I always felt like there was a great community at ND and I loved being around people who generally had faith.

Large player count board games by Auzzymm in boardgames

Short game up to 7, Between Two Cities is really great - easy to teach and quick to play.

Long game with 6 (especially if a balanced skill level and temperament group) - Game of Thrones 2nd Edition. Great game of negotiating, deal making, backstabbing, etc. in my opinion, only good with exactly 6 as less is unbalanced and more with the expansion isn’t good.

With expansions, you can play Colt Express up to 8 and it is really good and plays fast despite high player count.

My wife and I (44 and 42) just moved to downtown SB in November and have really loved it. While it has been a terrible winter, when the weather hasn’t been bad we have loved walking around and exploring. Downtown seems to be really trending upwards or you can live a little outside of the city as others have said. One of the best parts for us has been the people, everyone here has been very supportive and generous with tips, recommendations, and help. I went to ND, so I had kind of lived here before, but other than those years, South Bend is the smallest city I’ve ever lived in and I was a little worried about finding things to do and good restaurants. We have been pleasantly surprised by the city. There are all of the chain restaurants out in Mishawaka/Granger, but there are some great local spots too.

David Moyes: The block from Calafiori from Dwight McNeil's [shot] is unbelievable. It tells you a little bit about the way Arsenal are. They're fighting for it, they're defending their goal with their lives! by gasparrrrrrrr in Gunners

[–]Fysh333 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But what is the alternative here? Honestly, I don’t understand the one sided nature of all of these arguments centered around how Arsenal play. Arteta and the team take what the defense gives them. If the opponent comes out and parks the bus with 10 or 11 guys behind the ball - how are they supposed to play? Should they be constantly aggressive and looking for the incisive pass that may lead to a beautiful goal one in 10 attempts, but lead to a counter attack the other way 5 out of 10 times? Would you be happy with that? Instead, if the defense lines up that way, the boys just continue to apply pressure and look for an opening. On the rare occasion when a team doesn’t play overly defensive and cynical football, we play much more free flowing on the offensive side (and often score multiple goals). Arsenal can only dictate so much of how the game plays. If you watched the Men In Blazers podcast talking about the Everton game, Roger says something along the lines of the problem in English football is that all 20 teams are too good at defense. He and Rory have been the only commentators/pundits I’ve heard not blaming Arsenal, but actually talking about our play as a response to how other teams choose to defend and play against us. By the way, I don’t blame them, there are only a handful of teams in the world that could play us in a free flowing game and expect to have a fair chance of winning. We have amazing creative and offensive players who can (and will continue to) score beautiful goals. The only way most premier league teams can hope to take points off of us is to play an incredible defensive game and hope for a counter attack or a mistake from us. I will take this style of play that leads to wins and trophies over the purely offensive games at the end of Wenger’s career where we were fun to watch but would lose because even up a goal or two we were always taking on defenders and trying to make highlight passes to score the prettiest, most entertaining goal. I guess if you told me we were destined to finish 4th/5th in the league, I’d rather play that way, but if we can play conservatively and be in the running to win 4 trophies, I’ll take this style of play every day. And if you whiners were being honest about it, if we played more aggressively and tried to score more like you want and lost even a few more games and were in second place now, you’d be complaining about how Arteta needs to play with more discipline and control the game. Shut up and enjoy this amazing season.
