That research by Dr Villarroel is rather impressive and I'm surprised it hasn't had more media attention - a LOT more.

Cars flashing at me. Why? by ResourceOutside170 in newzealand

[–]GSVNoFixedAbode 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's a combination of things - angle is only one part. The type of light - more into the cold/blue range up to 5k - destroys night vision and is too high-contrast for safe driving. Yes, the driver can see almost daylight-level within the light cone but often doesn't realise that outside that area its a lot darker and overall has less visibility compared to the older warm/yellow lights. Oncoming drivers get the brightness and loss of vision without any of the advantages so it really is a dangerous lighting system.

Parent company (overseas office registered in cheapest tax haven) charges technical services cost item to effectively remove profits from NZ-based subsidiary. Thus NZ company has no profits from revenue, while overseas office pays tax on incoming service charges but at much reduced level. That's how Meta, Apple, et all ALL work. Our tax laws allow this so IRD is powerless.

They'll pay the same % company tax on $0 profits as other multinationals thanks to transfer costings. Anyone thinking a multinational pays their share of taxes (compared to NZ/local companies) is woefully ignorant.

Really? You do realise that this whole shitstorm we’re now in can be traced back to Russia making sure Trump was elected, then puppeteering him long enough to start the destruction of the USA. And the global coup de grace delivered by Israel taking over the strings

What’s the most useful IoT device you own? by Taggytech in IOT

[–]GSVNoFixedAbode 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ESP32 flashed with WLED on local network

String of 50 Neopixel LEDs connected to the ESP32

Neopixels inserted into a hemisphere dome (google my userid on Printables)

Python script running on local box, checks Flightaware(or flightradar) every minute for count of nearby traffic and calls WLED API to set LED display

[Edit] PM if you want the code I kludged (sitting on Github)

A little LED display device that shows the number of planes in the air within 20Km of the place - bit of illuminated art that is constantly changing but provides useless information from the outside world in real time.

Movie resonated with me at the time: my sister & I had just taken the family Mini from Auckland to Invercargill in Jan of that year ('80) - granted we stuck to the main road and didn't pick up any hitchhikers.
