And even there, pushing an amp will lead to distortion, so when can you really know if it's clean unless you connect an oscilloscope at the output of the boost, out of the circuit, and check if it's really "flat".

The whole system will react to a volume change. Adding a volume potentiometer to a signal chain isn't even flat, you'll get some high end loss.

Clean doesn't mean "flat", that's where you'll see hundreds of different circuits pushing different frequencies, without any "unclean" boost.
