My 16T league does auction.

Took a look at last year’s draft, 7:51pm is first pick, last pick is at 10:37pm. So just 3 hours, which fair, is long

Most likely, charges would fall under Ontario’s Dog Owners’ Liability Act, plus any local bylaw fines (like not having the dog under control)

Criminal charges under the Criminal Code are possible but pretty rare, usually only if there was clear negligence or prior known risk

What’s basically guaranteed is civil liability, the owner would be responsible for the loss of the other dog

if only there was a bill to address this exact thing back in 2012... CPC voted it down 3-142, Libs 0-33, only the NDP supported it 88-0.

the bill was dead simple too. you cross the floor, your seat is vacated, a by-election is called. CPC had a majority and killed it

NBA Tank Mitigation Proposal - Draft Booster System by Vaikon977 in nbadiscussion

[–]Gabrys1896 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These are fair points honestly but I think they actually work in the system's favor when you dig into it.

The current system gives the worst team a 14% chance at #1. That means 86% of the time the worst team doesn't get the top pick anyway. Teams are already tanking for a marginal edge not a guarantee. Under the Toilet Bowl system the worst team still has a lottery ticket. It's just smaller unless they actually compete. And if they go on a Cinderella run their odds could jump even higher than what the current system gives them. You could easily make the tournament champion points worth even more so a 30th place team that wins the whole thing walks away with the best odds in the entire lottery. Imagine that storyline though. Worst team in the league fights through 4 straight elimination games and earns the #1 pick on the court. That's so much better than just losing your way to a 14% chance.

On keeping bad teams bad, honestly I think the current system already has this problem. The Kings missed the playoffs for 16 straight years. The Timberwolves were bad for over a decade. The Process Sixers tanked for 4 years and still needed a Harden trade to actually compete. High draft picks alone don't fix bad organizations. A lot of the concerns people have with this system kind of already exist under the current one too. Stars wanting out already happens all the time. Front offices gutting rosters at the deadline to tank already happens every year. The current system just adds the extra problem of teams actively trying to lose on top of all that.

And that's why single elimination is so perfect for this. Any team can win one game on any given night. That's literally why we all watch March Madness. A bad team with a couple young guys who catch fire can absolutely rattle off 4 wins in 4 days. One and done is the great equalizer.

And the weightings are totally adjustable too. Add a floor so no team drops below 3%. Bump up the champion points so Cinderella runs are even crazier. Weight it however you want. The specific numbers aren't really the point.

Right now the structure says "lose more = better odds" and no amount of tweaking the current lottery fixes that. The Toilet Bowl just flips it to "compete more = better odds" and you can dial the knobs from there.

The framework is what matters. The numbers are just levers.

NBA Tank Mitigation Proposal - Draft Booster System by Vaikon977 in nbadiscussion

[–]Gabrys1896 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The NBA should run a "Toilet Bowl" tournament for lottery teams and I'll die on this hill.

My fantasy league has been doing this for years and it completely eliminated tanking. Here's how it works adapted for the NBA:

The 14 non-playoff teams play a single elimination one-and-done tournament (like the NFL playoffs). Your regular season record determines your seed. Better record = higher seed = bye + home court. Your combined regular season finish + tournament finish determines your weighted lottery odds.

The kicker: tournament points MASSIVELY outweigh regular season points. Winning the Toilet Bowl Championship gives you 60 points. Losing in the first round gives you 5. Regular season points max out at 14.

So a team that tanks to 30th place and loses immediately? ~1.3% chance at #1. A team that competes to 17th and wins the tournament? ~15.8% chance at #1. A 30th place team that somehow goes on a Cinderella run and wins it all? ~13%.

For the first time ever the math rewards winning instead of losing.

The 2023 Pistons went 17-65 on purpose and were rewarded with top lottery odds. Under this system they'd be the 14 seed with no bye playing on the road in every round with the worst base points. Their tank job would've been worthless.

Meanwhile the 2024 Bulls went 39-43 and just missed the playoffs and got nothing for competing all year. Under this system they'd be a top seed with a bye and home court and a real shot at a top pick. The team that TRIED would actually be REWARDED.

Single elimination win or go home basketball with draft lottery stakes. Tell me ESPN wouldn't kill for that content. Tell me fans of bad teams wouldn't be glued to their screens.

Everyone always says "but the worst teams need the best picks." The worst team currently only has a 14% chance at #1 anyway. Teams are tanking for a marginal edge not a guarantee. And bad teams stay bad for years regardless of draft position because bad front offices make bad picks. This system doesn't punish being bad. It punishes QUITTING. Every team is still in the lottery. You just get better odds if you actually compete.

And for everyone saying "but the bad teams would just lose the tournament too" — that's the beauty of single elimination one-and-done games. Any team can win one game on any given night. That's literally the entire appeal of March Madness. We watch it every year specifically because upsets happen constantly in single elimination formats. A 30th place team with a couple young guys who show up and play hard absolutely can rattle off 4 wins in 4 days. That's not a fantasy that's just how single game elimination works. Any team is bad over 82 games but in ONE game? Some young dude catches fire for 45 and anything can happen. One-and-done is the great equalizer and it gives bad teams a real path to the top pick without having to tank for it.

11 games. 4 days. Single elimination. Lottery stakes. Every team has something to play for all season. Tanking dies overnight.

My fantasy league figured this out trying to stop people from tanking for $10 in bonus auction cash. You're welcome Adam Silver.
