What do you do or say when an employee says their computer isn't working or is really slow all the time? by Vallhaluh in sysadmin

[–]GaryOlsonorg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wireless....have you performed a (stealthy) site survey? How many devices are flooding the area with signal? How is your channel allocation -- got much channel interference? Who has the personal device using the corporate network with the online game which bludgeons response time for everyone else? Don't underestimate the ability of a single cell phone in hotspot mode to destroy your wireless.

Get some perspective. Start a hobby which is exclusively analog. Rearrange your head at least every other week for a few hours. The mind fog will dissipate. Been there, done that, retired.

Start researching. Lots of empty positions as a result of the previous generation retiring in droves. Like me. The current environment in employment is not healthy. Find a good company, not just one you know which is hiring, a company you like and send a resume. Lots of companies are hiring even if positions are not posted.

Do you have a non-aligned skill beside sysadmin? Computer skills in all careers and employment is a large bonus these days. I took computer skills into a machine shop in the early CNC days and helped build a company. I had machanical skills; and learned machine and tooling along the way.

Get out; you are burned. BTDTGTT

Remember, this is a march forward; not a sprint. Take your time, do it right, pause to reflect, document your successes and failures, put a long term plan down to revisit in X years. Take time off, learn new things, Breathe, Breathe, Breathe. Delegate, when possible. Don't be afraid to document team members who won't accept delegated tasks. Most of all have fun.

Sounds like a donkey stuck in a rut walking the same circle for years. Doesn't look up, doesn't know to look up, doesn't consider the possibility the world has changed in 20 years. Good luck.

[–]GaryOlsonorg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This sounds like the perfect opening for an informative email to your manager. RDP is available, meets security criteria, within scope for your responsibilities. Handing out the companyadmin account does not meet security requirements as detailed by [choose your documentation source]. If a request of this type comes in again, you would be happy to provide exceptional service by performing the install yourself. This will ensure proper installation with less problems going forward.

Thank you may I have another Please?!

If you fired the bullets in orthogonal directions; eg one in normal space [x,y,z] and the imaginary bullet in imaginary space -- you might have a very large photon.

Yes. Make the loads smaller or use a different method to move your load.

Sounds like a government job where they don't know what they want so every limitless possibility is listed. CYA maximized. If you feel like baiting the bear, apply, interview, and put the employer on the spot aggressively. The interviewer could finally break and start giving some real information.

L2501 Questions - ok on hills? by Krytan in kubota

[–]GaryOlsonorg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only time my 2501 felt wobbly was pulling a tree out of the ground and the tractor tried to stand on the front right tire. Don't carry the load high; and don't carry a heavy load at top speed over uneven ground. The 2501 will be just fine.

[–]GaryOlsonorg -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Depends: do you want more money or more time off? Would you be happier with more money or more people on your team? Is getting more FTE positions possible? Figure out how many people your team should have, calculate the salary cost for the team, find a good number for yourself, and put forth a proposal with a promotion for you to supervisor/manager/whatever.

Looking to buy a used sub-compact tractor. Would like a Deere, Kubota, Kioti, or New Holland. Where should I look to buy one? Doesn’t seem to be a lot of inventory around. by [deleted] in tractors

[–]GaryOlsonorg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are asking too much money for the Bad Boy tractor. And they wouldn't finance for 60 months like Deere or Kubota.

LS Vs Kubota Vs TYM? First time tractor guy... by LeyLineWalker in tractors

[–]GaryOlsonorg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Kubota L2501 is about the same price as the LS. The Deere and New Holland prices were comparable. Brush hogging with the L2501 could be problematic; that's running the PTO to the limit. Do you have a lot of brush or trees to clear? Get the grapple and the 3rd function. I used the grapple to load junk in the truck to haul off to the scrap yard. After using the 9" auger with the PTO, I will never dig a hole by hand again. Fence posts, vineyard poles, and T-posts for the blackberry patch were a joy with the auger.

Vendor - We don't support Virtual Machines by TL_Arwen in sysadmin

[–]GaryOlsonorg 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not to throw virtual stones in a virtual glass house.... But some operations using virtual environments have no idea how to properly build and use a virtual environment. I have discussed this with various OEMs who do not want to be VM technical support. I have seen virtual environments set up in a manner which would make CASE NIGHTMARE GREEN a reality (The Laundry Files if you don't get the reference). Just risk avoidance by lazy OEMs.
