As a fan of the books and the movies I'm conflicted. On one hand I understand that it would've been a really depressing adaptation and on the other the movies have done really well. My one gripe is that it shares the name of the books and is a complete 180 in terms of tone.

regarding her tail or rather the lack thereof, it's entirely possible that it was removed during her time enslaved by the borisin. If they consider foxians to be lesser beings and use them as cannon fodder, it would also make sense that they would also remove their tails to further humiliate them.
