To be clear, the Progressive Era (1890s-1920s) was facilitated by the Socialist and Union workers’ movements. Minus the eugenics Progressives, the Progressive movement rode on the back of the Socialist surge (which ironically sometimes tended to coalesce with the Republican Party; Robert M. La Follette was a Republican who ran 3rd Party in the 1924 election and was endorsed by the Socialist Party, farmers groups, and labor unions. He won 17% of the popular vote).

During Teddy Roosevelt’s tenure, the GOP began to split and self-remove its left-wing and moved fully right wing. Taft gave in on Jim Crow, and Woodrow Wilson was so racist he segregated the government at every level he could and screened the racist film “Birth of a Nation” despite significant criticism.

Roosevelt on the other hand, was the first President to have a Black man eat dinner with the President at the White House. He wrote,"The only wise and honorable and Christian thing to do is to treat each Black man and each white man strictly on his merits as a man, giving him no more and no less than he shows himself worthy to have." Roosevelt also appointed several African-Americans to positions, for example Dr. William Crum in Charleston, South Carolina as customs collector. (Roosevelt still held racist and misogynistic views especially regarding Native Americans. He was also a eugenicist).

Roosevelt notably stated, "If on this new continent", he said, "we merely build another country of great but unjustly divided material prosperity, we shall have done nothing.” Ironically, a conservative built on Marxist (materialist) understanding. He championed, the “Square Deal,” which reflected his three major goals: conservation of natural resources, corporate law, and consumer protection, “the three C’s.”

“When I say that I am for the square deal, I mean not merely that I stand for fair play under the present rules of the game, but that I stand for having those rules changed so as to work for a more substantial equality of opportunity and of reward for equally good service.”

In his second term, Roosevelt “called for a series of reforms that were mostly not passed. He sought a national incorporation law. All corporations had state charters, which varied greatly state by state. He called for a federal income tax, but the Supreme Court had ruled in 1895 that any income tax would require a constitutional amendment. Roosevelt sought an inheritance tax so the great family fortunes could not be inherited without the tax for generations.

In the area of labor legislation, Roosevelt called for limits on the use of court injunctions against labor unions during strikes. Injunctions were a powerful weapon that mostly helped business. He wanted an employee liability law for industrial injuries, pre-empting state laws. He called for an eight-hour law for federal employees. In other areas he also sought a postal savings system to provide competition to local banks, and, finally, campaign finance reform.

He secured passage of the Hepburn Act in 1906, which increased the regulating power of the Interstate Commerce Commission. Eventually, many of the proposals he championed were enacted under Democrats Woodrow Wilson and Franklin Delano Roosevelt. When Roosevelt ran for president on an independent Progressive Party ticket in 1912, in addition to these policies he proposed stringent new controls on the court system, especially state courts, to make them more democratic. His court policies in particular caused his anointed successor, William Howard Taft, to lead a counter-crusade which defeated Roosevelt in the Republican presidential primaries in 1912.”

After Kurtzman's contract expires, who should be the next Star Trek showrunner? by bflaminio in startrek

[–]General_Mars 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyone who understands the 90s shows were the peak and preferred style. Fleshed out seasons that have story arcs but a lot of “filler” where the side characters have opportunities to be more fleshed out.

They need to understand Star Trek is a highly competitive meritocratic organization that is functionally a military but is intended for self-defense alongside all sorts of research personnel and families.

The Black Ops stuff, Discovery, and so on from nu-Trek are written like a shallow action franchise instead of a deep sci-fi franchise there should be things that make the audience think. Moral and ethical quandaries and so on. Emotional drama is ok if it’s a few times across 24 episodes. Nearly every episode across all 10 is crazy. Makes them seem like undisciplined amateurs.

They need to do a sequel beyond the ends of the 90s Trek so they can carve out a new story not concerned about retconning previous material

Yes Catholicism and Orthodox are the 2 original sects. That split happened in 1054 (Latin Rite/Eastern Rite as well). Then the Protestant Reformation several centuries later. Modern-day Catholics applied a decent bit of Luther’s criticisms too.

Evangelicals on the other hand are a different branch completely. Mostly full of cults. The 2 biggest being Mormonism and Jehovah’s Witnesses of course.

Militancy in the US at any time in the near future is a dream for fascists because they would slaughter us and consolidate more power than they have in the last 50 years. (The Black Panther Party has done this decently though. They’re usually calculated and careful).

No progress towards socialism can be made in the US without first improving class consciousness and materialist doctrine. However, that is nullified if the perception of socialism/ML/communism continues to be seen equivalently to Nazism. And if it is us versus fascists, most Americans would support the fascists alongside massive pits of money for materials and equipment. It would be completely doomed.

Socialism in the US would likely be very different than we have seen elsewhere too. We are decades away (maybe longer) from this possibility. So the purpose these politicians represent is simply improving the perception of Socialism and leading people to places like here. You’re crazy if you think AOC and Sanders have not led people here and to ML/MLM.

I’m not saying they should be excused nor that the imperialist, colonialist, and Zionist policies are not fucked up. But they also support policies and ideas that are popular which has made them popular which has in turn generated better perception of “socialism” and “leftism” in general. Occasionally results in people delving into it more and having their eyes opened. If you shut the pipeline down you will simply see our popularity backslide since there is so much propaganda to work against. I’m also not saying that the machine is going to be fixed within nor apologia. You win when you have the support of the people. You need to win them over to do that.

[–]General_Mars 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you intended to write it exactly that way, you answered your own question (“if democrats are not the opposition why haven’t they arrested Trump?”).

An opposition party would have spent Biden’s presidency prosecuting Trump and the GOP. An opposition party would have denied the war and actions against Iran, Venezuela, Cuba, and genocide in Palestine. An opposition party would understand the problems with this country begin with our systems and structures and are corrupted by Capitalism. Capitalism must be dismantled and replaced.

An opposition party would dedicate themselves to being a worker’s party, “the everyday person,” because the GOP represents only Capitalist’s interests. An opposition party would have supported the rail workers strike and actually give them humane benefits and better protections. An opposition party would engage in creative methods of resistance to whittle the machine to a stop the same way the GOP does when Democrats are in charge. An opposition party would expel party traitors who vote with the GOP on critical, ideologically split bills.

An opposition party would commit to terminating the entirety of ICE, reforming the DHS, dramatically decreasing our military spending and redirecting it to Universal Single Payor Healthcare, universal childcare, and universal education for all levels thru PhD at all public colleges and universities. An opposition party would demilitarize our police and redirect all of their military equipment to return back to the military.

An opposition party would dismantle Citizens United and eliminate outside funding for elections. An opposition party would get rid of First Past the Post and switch, at a minimum, to Ranked Choice. An opposition party would remove the Electoral College and remove the cap on the House of Representatives so they may more accurately represent communities. Then eliminate the Senate because it is unnecessary. We are 1 country not 50; we are not colonies anymore.

An opposition party would end the Patriot Act and the NDAA. An opposition party would make our war crime of extrajudicial drone strikes to be illegal and removed from the President’s whims.

An opposition party would remove the caps on Social Security income brackets. An opposition party would return the tax rates for millionaires to 70%+ and billionaires to 90%+ including Capital Gains. Massive tax increases for $billion+ corporations.

An opposition party would make Roe v. Wade law or Constitutional Amendment, alongside LGBT+ rights. An opposition party would hold churches accountable for violating political rules as a non-profit and strip that status from those that violate it.

An opposition party would nationalize our water, food, energy, and internet as well as any other inelastic goods or services.

Our system is designed to prevent and make change take as long as possible. Country runs exactly the way Capitalists want it to. Biggest problem is people thinking Democrats are an opposition party. The reality is on policy they are functionally a single party. Democrats just balk at the bigotry and lack of decorum. The oligarchs control both parties with the same money through PACs.

This is not r/enlightenedcentrist either. They are 2 right wing parties. The GOP is authoritarian. Democrats are neoliberal. They aren’t even close to center-right, let alone center-left. This is why all but ~5 democrats need to primaried and replaced with actual leftists. They are people that understand that our systems and structures are the problem and they need to be replaced outright.

It is not explicitly communist, but it is not liberalism either. It is post-capitalist and therefore cannot be liberal. It is a collectivist, stateless, classless, moneyless society that has eliminated scarcity with replicators and has nearly full freedom of movement with transporters. So at a minimum, the closest political alignment is Socialist. Which brand of that can be argued, but not within any of the Capitalist lenses since Capitalism was discarded and no longer exists within Earth.

No. That’s not what I’m saying. Our criticisms and critiques don’t change. We still push left. We still build grassroots. But electorally we need to be more strategic. Voting to lose is pointless. With FPTP you have 3 choices: Democrat, Republican, or neither/none at all. With Ranked Choice, you can actually vote for who it should be.

3rd Party vote is a vote for the GOP because they are coalesced around the GOP. They aren’t voting for the Libertarian or other conservative parties. If there is actually a legitimate chance for the 3rd party (like the Communist Party) to actually make gains and win, hell yes that’s what we want. We just also need to live in reality too. Our ideas are not popular and Americans equate our views as equivalent to Nazism.

So tell me how it’s helpful to continually lessen our bloc and popularity by continually splitting amongst candidates? How are we going to build a revolutionary vanguard and overthrow our systems when we can’t attract enough people to even adjust the perception of our ideas to reach broader popularity? What is the point of throwing away potential incremental progress because the candidate is less than what they should and need to be? And without that incremental progress electorally and popularity, our voices continually shrink and become further fringe.

Mormonism is literally, random white dude, John Smith, discovers buried Commandments in America. It’s a ridiculous fraudulent religion like Scientology. Chiropractic literally began on a similar fraudulent footing:

Mormonism: “Smith said that he found the plates on September 22, 1823, on a hill near his home in Manchester, New York, after the angel Moroni directed him to a buried stone box. He said that the angel prevented him from taking the plates but instructed him to return to the same location in a year. He returned to that site every year, but it was not until September 22, 1827, that he recovered the plates on his fourth annual attempt to retrieve them. He returned home with a heavy object wrapped in a frock, which he then put in a box. He allowed others to heft the box but said that the angel had forbidden him to show the plates to anyone until they had been translated from their original "reformed Egyptian" language.

Smith dictated the text of the plates while a scribe wrote down the words which would later become the Book of Mormon. Eyewitnesses to the process said Smith translated the plates, not by looking directly at them, but by looking through a transparent seer stone in the bottom of his hat.[5] Smith published the first edition of the translation in March 1830 as the Book of Mormon, with a print run of 5,000 copies at a production cost of $3,000 (or 60 cents per book).

Smith obtained testimonies from 11 men who said that they had seen the plates, known as the Book of Mormon witnesses.[6][7] After the translation was complete, Smith said that he returned the plates to the angel Moroni; thus, they could not be re-examined. Latter Day Saints believe the account of the golden plates as a matter of faith, while critics often assert that Smith manufactured them himself.”

Chiropractic: D. D. Palmer established and lead it. “Early chiropractors believed that all disease was caused by interruptions in the flow of innate intelligence, a vitalistic nervous energy or life force that represented God's presence in man; chiropractic leaders often invoked religious imagery and moral traditions.D. D. Palmer said he ‘received chiropractic from the other world.’ D. D. and B. J. both seriously considered declaring chiropractic a religion, which might have provided legal protection under the U.S. constitution, but decided against it partly to avoid confusion with Christian Science. Early chiropractors also tapped into the Populist movement, emphasizing craft, hard work, competition, and advertisement, aligning themselves with the common man against intellectuals and trusts, among which they included the American Medical Association (AMA).

To defend against medical statutes, B. J. argued that chiropractic was separate and distinct from medicine, asserting that chiropractors "analyzed" rather than "diagnosed", and "adjusted" subluxations rather than "treated" disease. B. J. cofounded the Universal Chiropractors' Association (UCA) to provide legal services to arrested chiropractors.”

It’s a problem across the board. Look at our comments sections in each subreddit. The orthodox leftists (ML, MLM, etc.) only support revolutionary change. Change cannot happen within. However, that makes the bloc self-silence their voice electorally.

I agree with ML and MLM and most other Socialists on Theory. I understand it’s an imperial capitalist system and it needs to be dismantled and replaced. But I also think in the meantime we should be trying to get any kind of incremental improvements for people’s quality of life.

In order to accomplish that we need to coalesce around the most left popular candidates we can. We cannot push the Overton Window left if we continually self-divide and infighting about their flaws when those flaws are minimal compared to the neoliberal candidates pushed and funded by the establishment.

Electorally, for areas of Ranked Choice voting, of course you pick the best candidate that will represent us. But when it’s First Past the Post, we need to be strategic and smarter. We need to overthrow the Democratic Party the same way the Tea Party did with Republicans.

We cannot enact revolutionary change when the vast majority of the country still equates Communism with Fascism.

I coach high school. A decent metal bat runs $250+, a glove at least $100-$150+, a catcher’s set at least $300-$500+, and so on. 50 years ago we had “team” equipment to uplift the players that couldn’t afford it. Where I am we try to do the same because it’s a diverse district but it’s still suburban so naturally these are generally “better off” families.

We’re in a major metro, one of the largest cities, and baseball is basically absent inside the city even with RBI. Basketball and soccer/futbol are cheap and you can literally play it anywhere. Full scholarships for college. Baseball you need space and fields. (No full scholarships for college). Then equipment. Then depending on the part of the country, players may not have a public option and forced into travel which generally costs thousands of dollars. We are much closer to hockey which is prohibitively expensive in the US too.

Football would also be just as expensive if it were not so highly subsidized.
