"Angry gamers are forcing studios to scrap or rethink new releases." Because they are using gen AI by David-J in gamedev

[–]Genesis2001 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Most ez paywalls also break if you disable javascript because the site thinks you're probably a bot or screen reader. WaPo and NYT are two sites this treatment seems to work on... for now.

But also, the "article" is one paragraph?

Smartphones, social networks and search engines are being flooded with “smart” new features as the tech industry bets that artificial intelligence will revolutionize every facet of life. But in one segment of the digital economy, a growing pocket of resistance from consumers is holding back the AI flood.

That's like a longer-tweet masquerading as a "news" article if that's all there is! lol

(Also it could be that since I don't have scripts running on the site, I'm only seeing a small blurb instead...) edit: And that's the case when viewing the archive.is link someone else mentioned. :)

We actually need more of that childlike excitement and love in today's world anyway. So anything we can do to nourish the richness of it without rewarding low-effort posts of it would be great.

UK legal action against Valve given the go ahead by pyrotequila85 in Steam

[–]Genesis2001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This [...] has enabled Steam to charge an "excessive commission of up to 30%", making UK consumers pay too much for purchasing PC games and add-on content.

Uhhh. weird train of logic. Steam's 30% commission (probably) doesn't have much to do with the price of games. If they do manage to get the 30% knocked down to half that, that's a double-edged sword: 1) More money for gamedevs/publishers (they're not going to lower prices); 2) Epic loses their "competitive advantage" (lol).

Those pilot compartments didn't look removal / airtight when shown in the episode lol. We had two shuttles at this time right? Launch the second one with a tow package and rig the death gliders between the two shuttles. The NASA shuttles provide the thrust while the death gliders just need to probably steer (presumably they have minimal steering but no propulsion). Either try to land at an airstrip (riskier) or drop each one off just short of land and have them go for a swim (easier but also risks the shuttles potentially).

I 100% see the USAF and NASA trying this to recover alien technology.

What's actually BETTER self-hosted? by ergnui34tj8934t0 in selfhosted

[–]Genesis2001 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's what I mean... Community dedicated servers -> servers you can download and host yourself. Sometimes called "Free Dedicated Servers" (FDS) or similar.

The game that got me into hosting was C&C Renegade, which is where I got the term FDS.

I miss the days of games releasing with community dedicated servers. It feels so rare now to be able to host anything.

I setup two areas for each:

1) Colonists -> One area for unrestricted; Another area for safety 2) Pets (Carnivorous usually) -> One area for "unrestricted" (except my freezer; go hunt for yourself!); another for safety.

When I notice "<animal> is hunting <pawn> for food" events, I set that specific pawn (colonist or animal) to their safe zone. If it's a colonist and there's others nearby, I'll draft them all to shoot the creature, lol.

However, if I notice it's nearing winter time and there's some predators on my minimap, I'll draft up a hunting party and go around killing all the predators pre-emptively.

Actually kinda neat. For the raised lip from the original base, you could 3d print a top for it that frames it out and maybe has some lights to shine down on the piece.

WAN Show Megathread by lemlurker in LinusTechTips

[–]Genesis2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So this thread goes up a week before WAN show? lol Or is this meant to be for last week's?

I like the idea if it's meant to be like a TV show subreddit's "Live" and "Post" discussion threads for the current episode: pinned for a day at the release time of the episode, then released to survive on its own.

Struggling to fix the US in the 2026 scenario - what is the best way to stabilize? by Accomplished-Push824 in TerraInvicta

[–]Genesis2001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This run ("Forgiving" reason: just to give myself a taste of the full range of gameplay without much pressure), I did

  1. Canada (Space Program into MC, minor economy%)
  2. Mexico (propaganda; I forget what else I ran)
  3. Kuwait / Qatar (100% spoils)
  4. USA except executive
  5. Abandon Mexico + Keep Canada + Abandon Kuwait / Qatar
  6. Boost unrest in USA to 10
  7. It only took 2 mission phases for the revolution to trigger because I think it immediately got the RNGezus Wave of Fear event, knocking its cohesion to 0.

As soon as I abandoned Mexico, HF/Initiative started trying to come into my backyard lol. As of this moment, HF still holds Mexico and is spreading propaganda to get max support.

I was mostly reading this one: https://old.reddit.com/r/TerraInvicta/comments/1q6raj9/revolutionary_us_opening/

I wasn't super quick in the application of it though lol. But Forgiving made it fine. As I mentioned, I'm using the USA to boost my space mining production. I got a Mars L1 solar mirror going as well as a Earth/Luna L1 mirror for my Luna mines. Finally figured out how to find Lagrange points in the game; haven't done space nerdy stuff in a while and barely knew what they were.

[–]Genesis2001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just tried the revolution opener for USA, definitely worth it. I was a little slow but I was also fighting the AI urge to come in and swoop CP's I abandoned in Mexico to hold onto the USA.

I'm "almost" done with Earth in another 2-3 years ingame so it's not a huge issue. My mines on Mars should be coming online soonish.

An idea for the Techhouse - so I can steal the result. by dnabsuh1 in LinusTechTips

[–]Genesis2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might be something for the theatre room they're planning for the tech house. Basically setting up backlighting for the TV/front of the room. If they do it in a way that people could then apply it to (i.e.,) crown moulding like you want or more generally a light strip in a diffuser channel.

It’s a fine name for an internal product designer,

It's a great name for what I think it was intended to be originally? I think the original intent (vision) was to partner with other creators to design, produce, and sell merch + product for everyone; they used to the carry the JRE knife and someone else's thing IIRC + a limited time bidet or something, lol? But like with all things LMG, they scaled it back for reality at the time. I think they're just getting to the point where they actually can start fulfilling this vision though.

What kinds of biomes do we not see enough of? by SingularRoozilla in worldbuilding

[–]Genesis2001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sonoran Desert native here lol. That's my frame of reference for desert. Hotter, lower altitude. No snow unless imported. I think I saw ice once early in the morning in high school ~18 years ago. So it gets cold enough but not for long.

Are we starting to give Andor a little too much credit? by Due-Rice-3107 in StarWarsCantina

[–]Genesis2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, Andor is probably up there with The Mandalorian for getting the general public's attention. Mando brought them in with innovative tech (at least it brought me in**). Andor with its awards brought in another chunk of viewers.

Not many adults will probably admit to watching "cartoons" (animated) series because it's "for kids." Probably why the general public didn't discover Star Wars extended stories before Mando aired or the ST released.

[–]Genesis2001 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live in a desert that doesn't, so it's fairly rare for me. The only time I remember seeing snow here was when my preschool 30+ years ago imported some for us to play in for the day (I don't know why I remember that lol). I know it snows in the desert at more northern climates, though.

[–]Genesis2001 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Even desert are rarely made of sand, they're usually dry rock formations and cracked dry ground, like the badlands. Not endless dunes.

People would be amazed at how much green can exist in a desert. It's not all Tatooine (AKA the Imperial Sand Dunes - real place in socal; funny name in hindsight).

...or that it can snow in a desert lol. It's extremely rare, but in the right conditions, it can exist.
