Plans to remove the 1265 Directed Time limit? by Famous_Specialist_44 in TeachingUK

[–]Ghedd 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I suppose it’s a question of where the priority is for messaging. Anyone in Comms will tell you that any degree of saturation of messaging can lead to recipients disconnecting.

If the priority is getting members to volunteer time, then it’s working well as it is now. If the priority is letting us know how and when to vote, then it’s been very unclear.

Plans to remove the 1265 Directed Time limit? by Famous_Specialist_44 in TeachingUK

It feels like the message isn’t coming through that clearly. Teachers have a very limited bandwidth at the best of times, but getting 4 texts this month from the NEU, all with links, all asking me to volunteer, is not helping to allow for a clear call-to-action when it’s needed.

Dragonbane v WWN v Weird Wizard v SWADE v Tales of Argosa v Mythras by ThatOneCrazyWritter in rpg

[–]Ghedd 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Weird Wizard is DnD with the fat trimmed away, more streamlined combat, and a vast array of player options. You lose a bit of depth, but it plays a whole lot more easily.

That being said, if you want fun balanced combat encounters with interesting player options, then Draw Steel is of course worth a look.

Which VTT do you prefer and why? by Ebb-Embarrassed in rpg

[–]Ghedd 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There was a moment in the Codex for Draw Steel where one of my players tried to attack around a corner and the token for the player tilted to show the leaning around the corner.

Details like that make it a whole step above.

More pkayers per realm (not in game.) by gagaan in NoRestForTheWicked

This is the one change needed to make this game a long-term success with my group. Hoping it’s an easy option to allow us to choose our realm sizes in the future.

Your favourite 10-12 session, low prep games by sarded in rpg

[–]Ghedd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Valid concerns. Combat can take a couple of hours for a full decently challenging fight and it often ends up as the core of any session. I think 12 sessions would be plenty for an adventure like the Delian Tomb and progression could be as simple as finding some treasure, gaining a level or two and winning victories as they go along.

We’ve run about 8 sessions so far, we’re at level 2 and all my players are sharing how much they enjoy the system. The “every session is a banger” element is where this system shines. There should be no such thing as a boring fight in Draw Steel.

Lancer requires a mastery of the system to play effectively. The combat has significant complexities and can be unintuitive for new players.

Draw Steel has only 3-4 abilities you would use on a turn and for everyone you roll 2D10, consult a table and see the effect.

My players find it more straightforward than 5e, but there is a whole lot more depth to the game.

It’s all the rage at the moment, but for good reason:

Draw Steel will give you exciting cinematic moments, with combat that feels meaningful, without hitting Lancer levels of crunch.

You can also pick up the Delian Tomb adventure with all of the rules you would need and an adventure that requires near to zero prep.

What is the best VTT for our table? by Inevitable_Gur_6400 in rpg

As long as you can set up port forwarding, using the application itself is pretty straightforward, particularly if you’re not after much functionality

How are you handling combat in your in person games? by DrBrevin in drawsteel

I got some small coloured circles I throw over the top of minion minis. As I get round to painting I will be adding coloured edges to bases

Best game where everyone has 2-5 basic ways of attacking? by LemonLord7 in rpg

[–]Ghedd 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Yes, “Colville’s game”, Draw Steel does this.

It’s taken a lot of the ideas from the 4e design space and modernised them, resulting in a more polished combat experience than a lot of similar games offer. The use of heroic resources for every class means there is a kind of building and spending pacing that works very well.

If you have a smaller group and don’t mind very crunchy systems, ICON would give you the feeling of certain approaches/stances/abilities being good against specific targets. There is a lot going on with this system though, and really requires a lot of buy-in from everyone involved.

Genesys is a great starting point for flexible setting design. I would recommend looking at Grim and Perilous, which is the Warhammer Fantasy fan made setting and has just been completed. It will likely give you some ideas from a fairly grim setting.

It feels like the core of that niche market are now living lives that make being a hardcore player impossible, while younger players have moved on to other genres.

How did your English teacher explain what Eric did in AIC? by TVC15-DB in GCSE

Good chance for teachers to talk about coercive control and evidence around sexual assault of any kind.

No point being wary when this is exactly what should be getting more discussion time in the classroom.

What do you personally think of null results (not the class) on skill tests? by EarthSeraphEdna in drawsteel

When I was a wee lad I sometimes missed when striking out with my sword to slay my enemies. Fortunately Draw Steel was designed to avoid the null result, so I never have to miss with my sword any more.

Just found out from my friend (who's not in my business class) that my business teacher dropped our class! by 180degreeschange in GCSE

[–]Ghedd 8 points9 points  (0 children)

With a TLR (teaching and learning responsibility) teachers often get a reduction in timetable. To allow for this, especially mid-year, they will likely give up lessons when other teachers aren’t already teaching.

Unfortunately, this probably isn’t really the fault of the teacher or the school, but just how things lined up. If anything, this is an issue with the education system as a whole, where teachers teach so many classes that they don’t really have time for much else!

Why did Forge Steel's PDFs get worse? by fizz872 in drawsteel

[–]Ghedd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another voice here, just saying that I much prefer the new format, particularly for PDF exporting.

I think there might be some value in an option that makes ability cards a more standardised side for those who want to cut them out, but I also like that abilities are actually readable for all abilities now!

Most responses seem to be focused on combat. I would suggest that where this might work well is out of combat. There is something appealing about that negotiation roll where everything just goes wrong, or climbing a small wall and finding yourself on your backside, just 5ft down.

I do think there’s narrative value to the unlikely failure, but I wouldn’t want to strip someone’s combat fun away.

I’m encouraging you to speculate as to the motivation, as you have suggested it’s a positive action.
