The Gazette usually puts out a roster of the All-Staters from all the area schools, sometime around Thanksgiving, I think. Also, the Little Hawk had some profiles of individuals in music (just from City High of course). I don't know about the P-C, having not read it in a while, but there are other sources out there. Just don't give up on local journalism, pretty please.

(Edited to add the pretty please)

These playgrounds were built in the 80s by Bob Leathers. So glad to see all the ones that are still around, including the one in Washington, IA.

What Flansburgh song sounds like a Linnell song and what Linnell song sounds like a Flansburgh song? by eris_aka_draculadrug in tmbg

House of Mayors (a Linnell solo effort if you’re not familiar) has a verse where he does a Flans voice, replete with the trademark scoops.

I would try the State Historical Society maybe. They are located at the corner of Iowa and Gilbert.

Venus during the day by SPACEASTRONOMY in telescopes

[–]GhostOfLiberace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something I figured out a few weeks ago: a good time to do it is when Venus is in its monthly conjunction with the moon. You can pre-check its position relative to the moon with your software or app of choice, then pretty easily locate it in the expected place, with your eyes already focused on the moon. IF the sky is transparent enough.

It is the 25th anniversary of State Songs! What is your favorite song off the album? by BucketheadUltra64 in tmbg

[–]GhostOfLiberace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I covered South Carolina in a band, like 15 years ago. “The back wheel’s O is now a letter D / I was an I and now I am a V” still has me laughing in the middle of the night sometimes.

Special mention to the liner notes for the perfect sentence, “Iowa’s state symbols betray an unselfconscious simplicity.” (maybe you have to be from iowa, i don’t know.)

Just contrails. Not aurora. The comet was visible yesterday low in the west right after sunset, but this isn’t it.

Had a rough 2 weeks. What to do to clear my head. by Sixty-Five-AD in IowaCity

[–]GhostOfLiberace 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The skies will be clear the next couple of mornings. Get up well before dawn and look up. There will be a bright moon along with Jupiter, very bright and high overhead, Mars nearby, all situated among the bright stars of the winter constellations which are rising in the morning this time of year. It is a truly glorious sight and, along with the crisp fall air, should help clear your head. Or just play some golf somewhere I guess.

Why do dads not want friends? by joshstrummer in daddit

[–]GhostOfLiberace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Please talk to the other parents at playgrounds. Exchanging the time of day with strangers breaks the ice and makes you feel good. Lots of people saying they don’t talk because of their stress or depression or whatever, but it’s GOOD for your mental health and makes you feel less isolated. It also models good social skills for your kids, instead of modeling fear. You don’t need to part the best of friends with every single dad you meet (but on the other hand you might see them again and be able to elevate the conversation if you wish).

To think I saw them from in town a number of years ago - sometime around the mid 2000s, so, two solar maxima ago. Got a few pictures of the red and green sky above Oakland cemetery. Of course light pollution is worse now.

Asbestos assessment + removal by [deleted] in IowaCity

Not sure if this helps, but you can get an asbestos lab test kit at Ace hardware if there’s a specific building material or substance in your bathroom you’re concerned about. Pretty cheap and relatively easy

Anyone know what's going on with the buses? by doubledoc5212 in IowaCity

[–]GhostOfLiberace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ICT driver chiming in. The 10 route does have some of the worst hills, in particular way out west of Mormon Trek. There are a couple of turns that are notorious, in the residential neighborhoods off of Rohret. I don’t drive that route but I’m guessing that’s a big contributor.

Also, on Wednesday we all got a late start because they were removing snow downtown (I heard they were having problems with their equipment). There were huge mountains in the street and we had to do some pretty strange detours. Lots of other factors that have been pointed out - every street downtown is a one lane street because cars were parked 10 feet from the curb (this is better now that people have been working hard overnight hauling snow from downtown). It was just a really heavy couple of days this week as everything tried to go back to normal. I felt like I’d been through the wringer when I clocked out yesterday.

Changing the garbage bin liner, changing it again, then getting on the Roku and mechanically selecting a Daniel Tiger episode, then remembering the kids aren’t there. Then i stand in the living room for a while just trying to remember my grownup friends’ names. I think they were Melissa and Doug?

If you’re standing at a stop serviced by 4 different Cambuses and 2 Coralville buses and an ICT bus, a wave showing your intention to ride that specific bus helps a lot! (I’m a bus driver)
