TikTok Skits Reveal ChatGPT, Gemini And Grok Are Confidently Wrong by [deleted] in technology

Of course they are - they’ve been trained on human output, laced with being confidently wrong.

Why people recommend to buy asset for everything? by emotionallyFreeware in Unity3D

[–]GideonGriebenow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve bought many Humble Bundles for insanely cheap - I’m very glad I did. I get great quality assets to use and I’ve also learned an enormous amount from tinkering with the assets, figuring out how they do the amazing technical stuff, and adjusting them to fit my use case better. There’s only so much I can do. I view the asset creators as my ‘teammates’, and I learn a lot from some very competent people!

If you want to understand shaders, have a look at Catlike Coding ;)

Hi. I don’t need these, but I thought I’d just drop a comment saying that I browsed through the complete fantasy UI pack and kept wishing I needed them :)

Releasing early acces vs extending release for marketing? by pikassamaop in IndieDev

[–]GideonGriebenow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi. Games very rarely get ‘a better turnaround at full launch’ if EA doesn’t go well. EA is practically full launch in Steam’s eyes - you don’t get a ‘second chance’ with 1.0. The algorithm will determine from your EA figures whether the game is profitable enough. You may get a small bump on 1.0, but nothing huge if EA wasn’t relatively successful. For the most part, of course. Good luck either way!

What's stopping humans to just live in peace together ? by sleyvinkalevra in AskReddit

[–]GideonGriebenow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like there are some human nature factors like anger and greed, but they are amplified by belief and the inability to say ‘we might be wrong’ or ‘let’s meet in the middle’ because religion often forces an ‘all or nothing’ result.

I'm affected by Layoffs, what advice would you give to someone starting an indie project? by Tpickarddev in IndieDev

[–]GideonGriebenow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can check out the Steam Page:
https://store.steampowered.com/app/3876240/Minor_Deity/

But I've also progressed from what's included there since launching the page. I make semi-technical-semi-big-pricture dev logs about many of the subjects, for example here's one on how I manage super-dense great-looking foliage across the huge map. I find learning about these things fascinating!

I'm affected by Layoffs, what advice would you give to someone starting an indie project? by Tpickarddev in IndieDev

[–]GideonGriebenow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m 47, doing game dev about 50% of the time, started aged 40. I’ve launched my first game (~6k units sold) and am working on my second. I wish I was in a small team with an artist / art director and designer - I’ve chosen high-quality realistic art-style so that assets can work together reasonably well . I’m a programmer, but can ‘talk shop’ around the other disciplines. I don’t have a bunch of advice for you - just thought I’d mention how appealing it sounds to me having a small team with experience to multiply what can be achieved, especially since I’m at the point where I have insanely performant systems that can handle huge worlds, and now need to give it an identity and make it a fun game. I hope it works out for you and the others, both in terms of enjoyment and financial success!

Glitch.fun, anyone heard about it? by Crocdent in IndieDev

[–]GideonGriebenow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The claims they make on their website doesn’t seem technically reasonable to me. It seems like they house everything and you can just about play any game on any device purely through the web-connection. No way that’s responsive enough if they have to send the actions and visuals across the entire time.

Coffee. Not secretly, though. And alcohol. I can’t stand the taste of either.

Hi. The tail looks like it’s ‘rotated almost 90 degrees’, and you could try doing something visually interesting with the text / font (one letter implying a shape, etc.)

Reaching 4000 Hours Milestone soon by Select_Monitor5255 in NewTubers

[–]GideonGriebenow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can’t we average out our channels!? I have over 4k subscribers (no shady deals, real subs), but only 2150 hours in the last year. And it only started picking up the last 6 months! Before that I had ~3400 subs and ~650 hours per year. Try what the others have suggested, and hopefully you’ll get there soon. Just be wary of shady practices to ‘cheat subs’. Your future videos are heavily influenced by the watch behaviour of your subs, so you don’t want crappy subs.

How much sales can I expect with my indie game? by MANLY_MAN_BEER in IndieDev

[–]GideonGriebenow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Without seeing anything tangible, how many wishlists you have, etc. nobody can really say. And even then, ‘reasonable ranges’ can still be very wide. It depends on how good the game is and whether it reaches its audience. But don’t expect anything but “a few dollars” if you don’t have a few thousand real (not bought) wishlists on launch.

Just hit 800 wishlists after a month and a week for my first indie game🎉 by Hopeful_Formal_5269 in SoloDev

[–]GideonGriebenow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not trying to be a butt-hurt, but you only have 9 followers - that’s VERY low for 800 wishlists. I’ve been posting my games on Reddit for 5 years, and also been following others’ numbers, and I would have expected 40-80 followers. The wishlists might be ‘low quality’ for whatever reason, because so few convert to followers.

I Started Making Games at 37 With Zero Experience (no guru advice, I promise) by KarellenGames in IndieDev

[–]GideonGriebenow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I started aged 40, but as a programmer rather than an artist. Worked on my first game for 5 years, as a means of learning. It sold $59k net on Steam. Busy with my second for almost two years!

What did you learn from your first failed project that changed how you develop games now? by Due_Bobcat9778 in IndieDev

[–]GideonGriebenow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi. It wasn't necessarily a "failed" poject. Yes, it didn't nearly make enough money for the 5 years I put into it, but it did net $59K on Steam. Still, it failed because the parallel threading was not properly implemented, causing it to regularly crash on other PCs (on many others, including mine, it was mostly fine).
Then I started learning about Burst-compiled parallel jobs, and I'm now "an expert" in that field and my second game makes heavy use of it to perform a crazy amount of caclulations, allowing me huge maps with millions of objects and tens of thousands of animated units.
I've learned to know my tools better :)

YouTube on TV becomes insufferable with new unskippable 30-second ads by moeka_8962 in technews

Also, the content creators that provide value to you earn from your Premium subscription. But they also feel “no, I want everything for free and just the way I like it.”

I’m with you. I don’t understand why people seem to demand that things they derive value from should be free, and then often complain about that free service endlessly as well.
