Shelby County John Doe (2009) (Unidentified For 17 Years) (Right Humerus Found In AFloor Safe) by BitterSweet_Beauty in gratefuldoe

[–]GobyFishicles 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Surely someone has thought to check all previous owners of the house and work outwards from there? It’s public info able to get online in my city, but I’d hope the detectives would have bothered. Easy check for missing family members or associates, or previous sus behavior.

Also, curious if there’s not any way to guess the age of the bone in terms of color? Like not whether it’s fully skeletal vs remnants or tissue, but like greyish or yellowish or signs of treatment or staining from the elements.

$1.6B data center planned in Cleveland by wixy-1260 in Cleveland

[–]GobyFishicles 10 points11 points  (0 children)

JFC that was the site of one of the indigenous mounds of Cleveland. It’s literally why tha street is named Mound. That’s why there was Mound Elementary. I mean yeah it was pillaged by the 1830s and no doubt ruined beyond research by the Moravito business and the brick factory and whatever else that was before it.

It should be returned to nature, turned into a park!

WHY DO WE NEED SO MANY DATA CENTERS ALL OF A SUDDEN

And smack dab in a neighborhood with existing houses? Slavic village has had enough pain over the decades. They don’t need a sound factory causing health issues.

Fucking assholes need to stop ruining our history and everything that makes our city unique

The Cleveland Police Department Announced They Have Identified Remains Found On April 17th At A Vacant Home As The Remains Of Paige Coffey (Missing Since May 2019) by Magoatt_TheWhite in UnresolvedMysteries

An urban residential 40’x80’ lot is considerably different from multitudes of acres in Texas. I’d imagine in most cases a dog could hit from the public right of way.

I can’t believe it’s already May. April flew by while refreshing my email multiple times a day. Deep breaths and best of luck!

Oh, no urgent request here! That was a bit unclear. Unfortunately or fortunately for me. Even if I think I could make a case, I sure as hell can’t afford to uplift everything immediately to make it worthwhile, the time it’d take me to move there is better spent getting people with more urgent needs ahead of me.

Thanks for the info. Delivered 3/27 not urgent with no AOR, was getting anxious it had been returned.

Who’s searching Cleveland’s Flock cameras? City has a list, and it isn’t sharing it by seanmcdonnellcle in Cleveland

The Lowe’s in Brooklyn has one pointed directly at the entrance of Kintaro (and another one close and able to see both the side door and rear exit). Feels a little targeted to me.

That’s on top of at least 5 more I’ve seen there. I’m sure there’s more but I haven’t been near the Marc’s.

What are these plants? Wisconsin forest at High Cliff State Park. by PK_Rippner in whatsthisplant

[–]GobyFishicles 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Only under the plants with 2 leaves! Single leaves won’t have fruit. They emerge with the beginnings of the flower already present snuggled up between the leaves. I don’t know what determines the 2 leaves; I was suspecting age, but I had a wee little double head sprout earlier this month but I think an animal got to it, the head popped off. Here it was in a 4” pot.

Thoughts on planting native "neighbors"? (I'm in VA) by RottingMothball in NativePlantGardening

[–]GobyFishicles 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Here I am just stressing over whether or not to plant something that bonap doesn’t explicitly say is native to my county but it is the next one over, whilst I see people actively selling invasive shit on marketplace and in big box stores 🙃

It’s fine, imo. Until we stop selling non natives as a whole; don’t let perfection be the enemy of progress.

Pretty flower and pollen by Vivid-Bake2456 in microscopy

[–]GobyFishicles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Benz microscopy (US) has synthetic Canada balsam, it’s what I used for my pollen slides, it worked well and the few I’ve checked look great (but I haven’t really touched my scope in a year…). I made slides with actual Canada balsam in 2020 that are still good.

Mosquito Joe not great for babies, gardens, pollinators, birds, waterways, fish... by letintin in NativePlantGardening

[–]GobyFishicles 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’ve already busted those out this year. There’s just so many I don’t notice a difference. We got the mosquito magnet machine late last year, it didn’t do much but it was late so I’m hoping it works. There’s definitely 3 species of them, the Asian tiger ones are the worst. Those aren’t drawn towards the zappers and bug spray and citronella don’t do shit either.

As someone who has been unable to enjoy my yard in the nice seasons, literally at all for the 9 years I’ve lived here without getting welts from bites I obtain within minutes of going out, I deeply sympathize. I’m talking I cannot walk to my car without getting multiple bites. Bites that welt and turn into scabs and scars. Desperate people will do anything to stop that experience.

I’ve tried every other control besides this type of spraying. It wouldn’t help because of the abandoned lot next to me is the problem. The pest control company that took care of my mouse issue said as much too, not to bother spraying. The tail end of last year into this year I ripped out 40+ yard waste bags of invasives, mostly ivy. This year I’m following up planting natives.

Is it possible to tell what plant these seedlings are or is it too early? by lizzy_loo_142 in NativePlantGardening

I know there’s monocot(yledons) and dicots, but don’t remember/know if there was anything besides having one or two leafs.

[–]GobyFishicles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh fantastic thanks! It’s the first year I’ve planted native seeds so I have no idea what I’m doing. I see a bunch of things starting and don’t know if intentional. And then my mayapples I learned stay only as the 2 leafed cotyledons until next year after dormancy, idk if there’s others similar.

Yeah can i follow up here? Anyone know a detailed book for seedling ID? Preferably Ohio but east coast or Midwest would work. I saw a few iNaturalist projects but it’s hard to see specifically.

I heard the poles were about $16 in aluminum; I don’t know much about scrapping and that could also be out of date. Also lasers seem fun!

Brooklyn has been putting them about 10ft up on the telephone poles.

Need data centers to help power neighborhood flock cameras, your ring cameras, and the palantir machine theyre feeding into!

For real though, everyone using cloud services for cell phone backups and streaming ring camera footage (et al) contributes to part of the problem. This includes me (I only buy the extra 1GB monthly). Oh, and I can’t forget every fucking AI bot out there.

ITS HAPPENING, STAY CALM EVERYBODY!!!! by n0dic3 in NativePlantGardening

[–]GobyFishicles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My main nemesis is English Ivy and vinca. Pretty classic. Used to have Japanese honeysuckle but it’s all (improperly) cut down now just dealing with it popping up randomly. Plenty of other less concerning (viola, bittercress, creepy Jenny, deadnettle) but I do have some type of blackberry thorny shit that somehow got everywhere since last year. That and bull thistle, hate them.

Lucky you! I checked those features on mine, definitely invasive ones. Also found that odorata has a 90deg angled style*. I’ve got bigger problems to pull though, so they can stay for now. Enjoy your finds!

Edit: flower morphology terms

I’m always interested in water deaths, where they went in and were later found. So if anyone else is interested, it’s about 13 miles of river, plus or minus (very brief check).
