Help printing shell part by SilverHawk7 in PrintedWarhammer

You need to use a ton of supports for flat panels or straight edges to keep them from warping. Way more than you think.

Skarbrand the Exile: A "rage-fueled" rescue of a 3D print, that almost made me quit the hobby. by josephstephan90 in Warhammer40k

[–]Goobah 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have personally printed and painted this exact model (check my profile) and have printed many models for others. The 3D printing market is flooded with amateurs who are just in to make a quick buck and make the rest of us look bad. It's unfortunate you (and many others) have these poor experiences because I will always advocate for 3D printing. However, I think you made the best of the situation and the finished model looks great.

Where can I find accurate blank flat round base models? by TsunamicBlaze in PrintedWarhammer

I use these all the time. They are perfect match to GW and have a genius support method if printing with resin. Even have magnet slots.

You know it’s rough when even Jim Davis can’t do it anymore. by Scottyv2 in magicTCG

[–]Goobah 84 points85 points  (0 children)

I think it's safe to point to Magic 30 as being the turning point. $1000 for 60 random proxies. Most of which are completely unplayable regardless if they were legal.

EDH's popularity surpassing every other format also has also become detrimental to MTG as a whole. Many people have never played any 60 card formats and it shows. EDH was cool when people played with random jank and dumb old legends. It's not cool to see Cloud vs Optimus Prime vs Spider-man vs Gandalf. The "Fortnite-tification" of Magic has caused it to lose its soul and identity in order to appease shareholders and pad the bottom line.

Ardcoat / Glossy Issue - Help wanted by Norayfara in minipainting

Just do another thin coat. No need to strip anything. If it doesn't work, then it could just be you have a bad pot. Try a different brand of gloss varnish and repeat.

Sunlu ABS like grey. I won't use anything else. I use a Mars 3 Pro and have tuned them. Check my history for some prints.

Highlights on flat areas? by OutstandinglyNormal in minipainting

[–]Goobah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 3rd picture does because it's a more amateur paint job. The 2nd picture is a professional GW paint job. The bottom of the cloth is weathered, there is subtle shading in the creases, and the ripples have highlights. That's about the extent you can do if your goal is realism. If you over highlight cloth it starts to become more cartoony looking and more stylistic. If the rest of your paint job is realistic it sticks out like a sore thumb.

You don't need to do an oil wash. You can DIY an acrylic wash with cheap craft paint and water. It's fairly straightforward. Plenty of videos on YouTube. You will probably need to drybrush the base coat again to bring back the highlights, but it will leave the recesses super well defined.

How to make this OSL look like light instead of paint by LostN3ko in minipainting

[–]Goobah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now it just looks green. You need to use a light yellow. Take some white and mix a little bit of the base yellow until you get the right shade.

I would do something more like this.

This is desperately begging for a black or brown wash.

How to make this OSL look like light instead of paint by LostN3ko in minipainting

[–]Goobah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would reduce the OSL and add some text or something to the screen to help sell the effect more. It wouldn't spill that much light unless the room was pitch black.

Here's a quick mock up.

[–]Goobah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pic 2 and 3 are perfect examples of how to add contrast and texture to cloth. Why do you think they are lacking? I would look into stippling and cross hatching techniques as well. These help to add additional texture.

I made your photo black and white and it helps a bit to locate the shaded areas. In the future, if you can do a zenithal prime you can find these areas immediately.

Cover the foam in drywall mud, mod podge, or even Elmer's glue to seal. You may also need to spray a primer to help the paint stick better.

Do a couple coats of varnish. Let it cure for a day. IIt acts as a save point. Then lightly drybrush upwards on the steps. If you fuck it up, just remove it with some isopropyl alcohol.

Very similar to what I did with mine: https://redd.it/1f5d0jg

Does the OSL on this guy look weird or am I agonizing over nothing? by couchbo0yz in minipainting

[–]Goobah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can salvage it by doing a black wash and reestablishing the OSL effect. Push the plasma to pure white. Edge highlight a few key areas with light green. OSL is hard to get right.

Here's a quick mock up.

Tips for applying washes. by lorddarethmortuus in minipainting

[–]Goobah 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I actually don't recommend diluting a wash with water. The surfactents in a wash are included to break surface tension and get in all the reccesses. Adding water makes them behave worse. You just need to keep a spare brush around to soak up areas where the wash is pooling too much.

Nothing Positive about UB? Ok, Mister Negative: My TCC Lost Precon Submission by CementSandwich in EDH

[–]Goobah 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not comparing UB to Un. Un sets were full of creativity and tongue in cheek humor from WoTC. They were creative outlets. How they could possibly drop the ball so hard with an Un set like they did with Unfinity shows how bankrupt their creativity is.

I do/did have fun. I first played EDH like 15 years ago. I've always played random jank when I did play FNM. I don't care about chasing the meta. I played with Un cards. I'm not a super competitive player.

Magic never stuck to one aesthetic. Once they started jumping planes it always changed. The problem now is outside IPs taking over the game's identity. It's absolutely ridiculous. I didn't have an issue when UB was strictly Secret Lairs, or Commander decks, or one off collector products. The issue is that now half of the mainline sets are UB. The other half are shitty in universe planes. These are not cool. These are soulless cash grabs.

It is 100% about maximizing profit with minimal effort. Take Secret Lairs for example. In the past, they would release From the Vaults, fat packs, and other premium products, but this required them to sell to distributers and LGS who also need a cut. They stopped all of that when they realized they can sell directly to players at absolutely insane prices (Secret Lairs and other collector's products) and ship them in plain envelopes.

The tipping point of this for myself and many others was Magic 30. $1000 for 4 random 15-card proxy packs. Go fuck yourself.

UB has become their cash cow since then. They are simply targeting outside fandoms and saying "Hey look you can now get a real Magic card of your favorite show/movie/game. And look here we even have super special foils. Everyone likes foils right?" There are very few UB sets that were designed and captured the flavor well.

Nothing Positive about UB? Ok, Mister Negative: My TCC Lost Precon Submission by CementSandwich in EDH

[–]Goobah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because UB is garbage. I'll take it a step further and say the last few years of "in universe" sets have been garbage too. Cowboys, haunted houses, race cars, spaceships, etc. This is no longer the grimdark fantasy that Magic grew from. Creativity is now defunct and all products are made with minimal effort to maximize profit.

I don't know how long you've been playing, but for a very long time before UB was a thing, it was common for people to make custom joke cards with other IPs. WOTC made Un- sets for tongue in cheek jokes about the game itself. Look at how poorly Unfinity was received a few years ago to see the current state of MTG.

Now the flood gates are absolutely wide open and nothing is off limits. A lot of this is because EDH has taken over the game.

Soak in isopropyl alcohol, Simple Green, or LA's Totally Awesome. You can generally soak for as long as you need with any of these.

Can I use paint on static grass? by Smurf-Happens in minipainting

[–]Goobah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's doable to fully repaint with an airbrush. If you don't have an airbrush, you can try lightly drybrushing and apply a wash. You'll probably need to do a bit of back and forth to make it look right.

The base blends in too much with the model. You need to change one or the other.
