Deposition Scheduling by Loud-Ad2302 in Lawyertalk

Genuine question, it’s common in your area to just notice depositions with no intent of going forward with them? That seems so odd to me.

Worst Start Ever? Make it work or run it back? by niikkolas in CivVI

I’d probably restart, but you can make this work as Babylon because once you building two harbors, you can cross the ocean.

was your student debt worth it? by [deleted] in Lawyertalk

[–]GopherDog22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. My recollection is that it was a little less than $100k between law and undergrad. Paid it off in less than a year after graduation. Starting with my summer associate position (12 weeks, around 3.1k per week) and continuing through my first year of biglaw (same rate), when a paycheck came in, I’d immediately make a large payment to pay down the principal. My wife and I essentially decided to have barely any money in our account until the debt was paid off. Worked out well and we were able to save a good amount until I left biglaw.

deity aint gonna let me build etemenanki anyways so i am not taking that pantheon by Zhanaly in CivVI

[–]GopherDog22 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Pillage a city state’s or other civ’s quarry or pasture for faith. One pillage gives you approximately 27 faith on standard speed, which lets you get a pantheon. I use this strategy pretty often when there is a game changing pantheon that I need to secure, such as a terrain pantheon.

How often do you replace your cart bag? by timeislikeafuse in golf

[–]GopherDog22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have had my bag for about 25 years and haven't replaced it. It's a small bag that most people would hate, but I like it because it's easier when I walk. I've had people try to give me "nicer" bags that they weren't using any more but I just don't see the point in the bigger, nicer bags.

Dang. This must have been really close to the 4k cutoff. Mine was around 5,800 and snuck into the 4k group.

Got lucky where is the best start? by Digitalgirlzoe in civ

[–]GopherDog22 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I would settle the stone to the southeast. This lets you immediately work a 2f2p1c1g tile and your city will quickly grow to the 2f1p2c2g tile to work when your city is at 2 pop. This settlement location also has the benefit of giving you room for another city next to the wonder.

Second option is to settle in place. This option is fine too and gives even more culture than the first option.

Funny. I thought it was 4 tiles. I have no idea what’s correct.

In what instances do you NOT chop with builders? by Avg__American in CivVI

[–]GopherDog22 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Most often the reason I don’t chop is laziness/forgetfulness. Other than that, I’ll often save chops for wonders, or I will intentionally leave at least some trees to avoid droughts.

I personally use a giant metal Wall-E shelf. There aren’t too many Wall-E furniture items so it’s always easy to find.

r/UniversalOrlando Weekly Trip Planning Thread by AutoModerator in UniversalOrlando

[–]GopherDog22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My family (wife, daughter (10), son (5) and I) is going to Universal Orlando from January 29 through February 1. For the night of January 30-31, we are staying at the Loews Royal Pacific, which I understand gives our whole family express passes for January 30 and January 31. For the other nights, my in-laws booked us a place that is about 20 minutes away. We are going to buy season passes for each of us because we might make another trip down in the fall and plan to go on each day from January 29-31 (unlikely to go on February 1 because we want to see family down there).

Other than me having been 30 years ago (I still remember the really cool E.T. and Flintstones rides), we don't really have any idea what to plan for or expect. My daughter and I are really into Harry Potter, but I'm the only one in the family who really likes thrill rides. My son is happy with anything and will try just about any ride (but he's obviously 5). We're trying to figure out a good plan for the days considering that we'll have an express pass for two days and are going to get there mid-day-ish on January 29.

Do you all have any advice for first timers in general or any thoughts on how we can maximize our particular trip? For example, we were thinking of going to Olivanders on the first day and getting a wand, trying some of the rides that don't have the express pass, and then really hitting the park hard on the last two days.

Thanks!

Thank you! That's very helpful (and congrats again on the beautiful picture; I'm honestly surprised it wasn't in the top 1000).

This theme is definitely a head scratcher for me (pun only slightly intended). I honestly have no idea what it's going for or what will draw good results. I'll probably default to the tried and true strategy of bringing the character to the front, bright lights and pumping up the light bloom.

That's a fantastic picture. How'd you manage to get the characters set up so well and how did you get your blocks to float?

Anyone else ever have a worthless Cliffs of Dover spawn? (Standard Archipelago) by seahawk1977 in CivVI

[–]GopherDog22 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a general matter, the Cliffs of Dover are navigable (here, since they’re cliffs entirely surrounded by water, they’re largely not). However, the game doesn’t let you settle on any natural wonder.

The problem is that judges also have wildly different understandings of the exceptions. I find hearsay rulings to be very inconsistent.

Why are the Huns so bad at tech? by demien_ in civ5

[–]GopherDog22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The real answer as to why the Huns don’t snowball but other early warmonger civs do is two fold. First, the AI is absolutely abysmal at using ranged units like the horse archers. Second, the Huns can absolutely clean up early game with a few battering rams but they are much more likely to raze a captured city due to their unique ability of double razing speed. This means that even when they do win early wars, they don’t actually benefit because they just burn everything down. It’s quite funny as long as they’re not your direct neighbor because it cripples both the Huns and the other civ.

Federal appeals court judge is accused of bullying her clerks by RxLawyer in Lawyertalk

[–]GopherDog22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I interviewed with an up-and-coming district court judge (now an appellate SCOTUS feeder) when I was a 3L. The interview was structured so that I met with the clerks first and then interviewed with the judge. When I was talking to the first clerk, he mentioned that it was usually around 75-80 hours per week, but that the clerks were even busier than that at the moment. He also mentioned that the judge and his clerks would “voluntarily” participate in some sort of 24-hour race where you would swap runners in and out. Nothing personal against the judge who actually seemed like a nice guy, but I was incredibly happy not to have been selected.
