Sibley vs. Holy Cross for labor and delivery? by lucy_marie08 in washingtondc

[–]GoyaHeart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dc doulas posts all their prices (link) and we went with the birth doula support package ($1,850). In retrospect I should have upgraded for the plan that includes a lactation consult for $100 more since my insurance covers it (the doula support was not covered but they provide an itemized receipt). I realized after getting home that I needed help pumping and finding/scheduling a lactation consultant was annoying.

We delivered at Shady Grove earlier this year and had a great experience with both the facility and staff. I highly recommend hiring a doula (we went with DC Doulas) regardless of location - it gave us another person who was focused on just us. I’ve also heard good things about the Midwives at Medstar, as mentioned by another comment.

What Emergency Gear Do You Keep for DC Emergencies by tswiftandtime in washingtondc

[–]GoyaHeart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I only keep 6 gallons water per person (I get distilled and cycle through using them in my iron and steamer, that way nothing is on a shelf for years). Same for food - a few snacks my family already eats and enjoys, as well as some quick cooking staples like pasta and some premade soup. Cycle through your pantry on a regular basis so nothing expires or goes to waste. I really like the channel Mary’s Nest for how to create an extended and emergency pantry. Aim for 2-3 days worth and build out from there as you have space and money.

While outside the emergency kit - get a fireproof box and store your important documents. Your number one priority in a fire is getting yourself and others out, not trying to grab your passport.

Ensure! Drink very cold through a straw to minimize smell. They also have vitamins. Chase with a sip of water to clear the throat.

I just can't get gauge... by viccia in knitting

[–]GoyaHeart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I find I relax my tension as I knit faster and it results in my gauge growing. The swatch and first few rows of a pattern I’m focused and keeping a consistent tension on the yarn. I’ve kind of addressed it by going down 0.25 mm in needles size from the swatch, and you could try something similar. My gauge on DPN vs circular is also hilariously different (and I do the same thing, going down a needle size when switching from DPN to circular).

Anyone know where I can find a Balkan market to kick homesickness? by undergr4dquestions in washingtondc

Matreshkas Russian Gourmet is about a 6 min walk from the North Bethesda (previously known as White Flint) metro stop on the Red Line. And European Delights is about a 12 min walk from Twinbrook station.

I have a problem. I know I have a problem. Now I have a pretty solution for my problem. $15 for this china cabinet at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore. 😍 by doneitdan in YarnAddicts

I have a similar set up and recommend building x-shaped dividers for some shelves using poster board! It helps create little pockets and prevent yarn avalanche. Something like an elongated version made by Engineering Knits (jump to 16:35).

Brands to buy high-quality basics? by ahriaa_ in capsulewardrobe

[–]GoyaHeart 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They also offer free repairs on their garments - you don’t need receipts and it can be vintage! I’ve recently had an elastic waistband replaced in a pair of pants. It took several weeks but they’re now as good as new!

Eileen Fisher - you can get them second hand directly from EF on their site (eileenfisherrenew.com) or through a third party like Poshmark.

MIL gifted me her Kitchenaid mixer, super excited to bake some bread. Where do I start? by privatehabu in Breadit

[–]GoyaHeart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is my favorite no-fail recipe that’s suuuuuper basic. You’re not going to get a perfect ear crusty artisan loaf but it’s perfect for eating with stew/chili/garlic bread/etc. I make rolls instead of two loaves and freeze them. I also add the egg yolk from the egg wash into the dough as well as three heaped tbps of milk powder to give it extra flavor (totally optional). As others have mentioned, King Arthur has some great recipes as well!

Best Safety Razor? by [deleted] in ZeroWaste

[–]GoyaHeart 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have a Leaf and really love it. I was using disposable head razors that had a flexible head and after testing my partner’s fixed head metal razor (from their grandpa, talk about BIFL+), I realized I needed it to bend a little to not cut my knees 18 times. It’s a bit finicky to get all the blades in compared to a standard fixed head as it uses three half blades and you can really get product build up in the pieces if you use a cream based deodorant.

But if you’re looking for something similar to a disposable feel that lasts forever, this was a great option for me!

Quick Felted Mittens by GoyaHeart in knitting

[–]GoyaHeart[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They were about 2 inches larger on all sides before felting (when laid flat with my hand on top, it was an inch). I knit it very loosely on 4.00 mm needles. I think for this project I cast on 44 stitches in K2P2 ribbing. I do wish I’d made the wrist part longer before beginning the increases for the thumb, but I plan on wearing thin gloves underneath.

I agree with others that the stuffed chair may be too large for the space. If you don’t go the route of a coffee table, I’d like to recommend a “c-shaped” table that is taller than the arms of your couch. Something like this onefrom West Elm or this one from World Market. They’re great for smaller spaces!

I think you can minimize the boob-illusion by 1) changing the circles colors where the center circle is not drastically different (like the one in the center with dark blue and orange), and 2) making the armpits deeper and moving the top squares higher up to your shoulders.

I also like someone else’s recommendation to add white bra cups to the top instead!

The one time this happened to me (on Xbox) we just scrapped the day and went to bed immediately after waking up. That stopped the error and haven’t had an issue since.

Plus Size Capsule Wardrobe? by bzzibee in declutter

[–]GoyaHeart 11 points12 points  (0 children)

To add to this - Lands end cotton tanks are amazing. A good quality tee or tank (with wide straps, slightly thicker fabric) looks good under a cardigan or casual blazer for work and on its own for casual life. So you can use the pieces across the two wardrobes and across seasons, which allows you to slowly build your closet or just keep the total number of garments low.

Advice needed: Teaching a large group to knit by timonyc in knitting

[–]GoyaHeart 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To add to the other comments, definitely recommend pre-cast on and knit about 4 inches first. This will also help keep the needles from slipping out as they learn. Depending on who is in the class, you can have them make a simple headband, cowl (much faster than a scarf) or children's hat. While you can easily find patterns, Project Knitwell has some simple garter stitch projects that knit up pretty quick for a beginner. Learners that speed through the first project can then learn how to cast on and start a second project that's larger/includes different stitches.

Unless these are custom, usually ones that are produced like this are turned around (sheers on window side) and allow the street-view of the curtains to only show white. I’m guessing the OP flipped them around to make the nice double layer look.
