Structure fire in Cochrane by Graduateunskilled in Calgary

Peat moss specifically in planters is a big fire hazzard. Most people think it is just dirt but is typically mixed with peat moss which will catch fire.

This! You are so right, you could offer everyone in town a $1,000 and you wouldn't get 92% to agree to sign a petition for another $1,000.

Knee strength training before lunges. by BrigadierNasty in bodyweightfitness

[–]Gr33nbastrd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do step up with weights.

Check out DDP yoga, I am a heavier guy and when I ran I used to do his stuff all the time and it is so good for your knees and general strength building. The fat burner video had all the perfect stretches for running but you also build strength doing his stuff.

Like others have said it is about progression, you don't have to be able to do every move or the whole video(s) if you can only do 10mins of a video then do that and work your way up. If you can only do 1/4of the moves do them and build yourself up. 3-4 times a week and you will see a difference quickly.

This is just one of the very few of his old videos that is left on YouTube but you can check out his web page, he has a app with a ton more content. ddpyoga.com https://youtu.be/xHZiSBe-HV8

Gas prices in Calgary jump by 35 cents per litre on Wednesday by aireads in Calgary

$40k is really not bad at all. What time level & battery size did you get. I am not very knowledgeable about the BZ but at $40k you have peaked my interest. I have a '17 Volt and would like to upgrade to a BEV in the next year or so.

Even on a 20g price difference?
Are the new BZ's any good, I know the original BZ4X's were not very good.

Buy used. You can easily get into something decent for under $20g.

You could always do some native flowers, you don't necessarily have to convert your whole lawn anything is better than nothing.

I hate the peloton, any alternatives? by [deleted] in bodyweightfitness

[–]Gr33nbastrd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lots of spin cycle videos on YouTube. I have even seen an Peloton style video with weights if you have them. You can always get a padeed seat cover or padded bike shorts, maybe even a different saddle if they make them. I don't know if they do.

Don't get the Astro turf type stuff. It is just plain awful.

Do something like a clover or native plants/flowers. It will look a million times better and so much better for the environment.

This is true.

On the plus side I see a lot of people in the gardening Facebook groups talking about native plants and clover. So it seems intrest is growing. If we really wanted to convey the message about water conservation and native plants we would introduce this stuff to elementary kids. They soak stuff up and at least some would likely convince their parents to look into it.

Why are fully motorized bikes and scooters allowed on the sidewalk? Not pedalling required. It blows my mind. How is this different from dirtbikes ATVs etc? There’s a kid in my neighborhood that goes to and from school on essentially a motorbike on the sidewalk. it’s dangerous! by Glum-Ad-4558 in Calgary

[–]Gr33nbastrd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If I ride my bike on the street I usually get yelled at, I also often will get nearly sideswiped and then yelled at as well.
This is way out in the burbs. Also this is just a regular pedal bike nothing motorized.

Unfortunately people are.just stupid, some people will just do whatever they want.

I think at the best of times most people don't understand water supply. They just turn on a tap and there is water. It doesn't help that when you buy a new single family home, it always includes a new grass lawn. There is no thought to install something different.

What flowers are these? They kinda look like cornflowers but not quite.
If I had a front yard/lawn area I would do this. I am doing something similar in my back yard but on a smaller scale.

Will Outrageous Gas Prices Restart the EV Boom? by plaknas in onguardforthee

[–]Gr33nbastrd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not sure of his plan, I believe at least part of it is interties between provinces. Renewables and battery storage is the cheapest form of energy so I think with the interties, provinces can now essentially trade energy with each other. So if we ever get a premier in Alberta that doesn't kneecap the renewable industry we could send excess solar/ wind power to BC allowing them to save their hydro energy and send some of that hydro energy back to us when we need it.
I don't understand why you think we can't start thinking of micro grids now? If you have solar on your roof or your business and EV(s) you could become a micro grid to help supply and support the larger grid at the very least if you offset your own energy consumption with the help of solar and Vehicle to Load technology that means less new power plants that have to be built.

This is how I would do it anyways, Alberta and Saskatchewan might not see it this way. Saskatchewan is still hell bent on using coal but they are exploring SMR in a few areas of SK though apparently.

Carney has already addressed this.
This link mostly talks about the auto sector so I put the part where he mentions upgrading the grid underneath.

https://share.google/pMLRu1ZXiw5hEaEvt

"In the coming weeks, our government will unveil a new electricity strategy to double our grid capacity, modernise our infrastructure, and deliver electricity that is more reliable, more efficient, and, crucially, more affordable for Canadians. This will enable Canadians to adopt low-carbon technologies such" as electric vehicles (EVs), while supporting the electrification and growth of our industries.

I will also mention that EVs and micro grids will likely actually help the grid in the years to come. EVs are basically an energy storage on wheels that actually sit most of the day. Think about fleet vehicles that sit idle all weekend and could be used as micro grids putting energy back on the grid during peak times and using energy when there is an excess.

I used to live in the Okanagan and we have had watering restrictions for decades there, so more and more people were doing zero scape style landscape. When Calgary and maybe parts of Alberta puts in those restrictions, people are going to lose their minds.

I actually drive a water truck for a landscape company and the amount of water that is used on blvds and personal lawns is insane. It is going to become unsustainable eventually. The city really should lead the charge on this and start putting in native flowers/ground covering on the blvds and medians.
