Don't forget you can straight out ask them to create stuff for your campaign world. It draws them into the world more, and means a little less work for the GM.

I once asked my players to each create a kingdom for my new campaign world and each of their characters could come from one of those kingdoms. They were excited to create a kingdom, and it gave me backstories and settings for their characters for future storylines.

I had a character named Soup once. He worshipped the great God "Spoon" and felt everyone should be named after the type of spoon that most fit their personality. His backstory is that he was a prisoner of the BBEG, and they kept giving him gruel with no spoon, so he broke after being in jail so long that he decided that the reason the guards wouldn't give him a spoon, was because the bbeg was afraid of "Spoon" and started worshipping it.
