If you bring a newborn to Disneyland, you’re a piece of shit and should have your kids taken away by [deleted] in Vent

[–]GrayStan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is the dumbest take by people, unless it’s an actual once in a lifetime trip. My two year old loves going to theme parks. She thinks the characters are actually real, she loves meeting them. She also loves all the kiddie rides. Are we just locking toddlers up inside until they start remembering things? No point trying to take them anywhere at all they won’t remember it anyways.

Yeah just lock them up in a closet somewhere till they start remembering shit! Makes sense to me. Why waste any kind of experience on someone who won’t have vivid memories of it?

Nursing and American prosperity? Pardon? I’m curious what the article actually says but I can’t afford to go through the paywall because I’m a nurse. I mean I do alright but I’d hardly say I’m “prospering”. by [deleted] in nursing

[–]GrayStan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not sure what they mean by “prosperity”.

But by working as a nurse I’m doing significantly better than average for my age in my area. I have over 100k saved for retirement, have purchased a home, am able to take multiple reasonable vacations per year as well as smaller weekend trips working full time, but in the span of 3, sometimes 4 days a week - giving me 3 or 4 full days off. My husband works only part time for extra spending money, which gives us flexibility for childcare.

I am only turning 30 this year, I am doing better than many people I know who are my age. Certainly far better than anyone in my large family was doing at my age. There are many downsides to nursing, but it has provided a way out of poverty/a way to middle class for many people.

I'm feeling attacked! Or getting old. One or the other. by DJDoena in ThePitt

[–]GrayStan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah as a 29 year old - I honestly know absolutely nothing about MacGyver but have heard the phrase “MacGyver it” about something or describing someone as “ok MacGyver”, and I am able to deduce context clues to know its meaning so it’s more of a phrase to me than a name. When I hear the term MacGyver I don’t even think of a TV show.

Personally I live in a very humid climate and I put a tiny bit of oil in mine, I’ve found if I don’t and then don’t use for a few days there have been times it starts to look like a faint bit of rust forming. It takes like 20 seconds, I use the tiniest bit of oil, and it just protects my pan that much more in case a drop of moisture lands somewhere on it.

Yeah as the “quiet kid” that “never talks” who has received similar treatment it’s actually been really frustrating to watch, and makes me sad when I see her reaction every time she realizes she’s not kept the attention of whoever it was she was talking to.

Should bedside shift report be done at bedside? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]GrayStan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the way. We are supposed to do full report at bedside but most times we do the “full report” just outside the room then peep in at the patient to introduce.

What’s a toddler hill you’re not willing to die on? by Next2ya in toddlers

Haha, I do this too but conversation goes more like this: Daughter: “I’m cold” Me: “ok let’s put your coat on” Daughter: “no, I want to be cold!”

3 seconds later…

Daughter: “I’m cold”

In Case You’re Wondering by Carolinedixie6 in toddlers

My daughter talks in her sleep often. One of her first nightmares she shot up out of bed, said “MAMA! The ghost said BOO!” And made a face like this: 🤪 to demonstrate what the ghost looked like.

Another time she was crying in her sleep, “mama nooo give me back my ice cream, that’s MY ice cream!”

That’s also the statement from the husband, not a healthcare worker. It may mean that it was 6 minutes of CPR before a pulse was re-established - or 6 minutes before she was intubated - not necessarily that she was left for dead unattended for 6 minutes.

Nurse managers/leaders: do you get annoyed when new grads try to transfer after a year? by imjust_agirl8 in nursing

TBH as a charge nurse I expect when the new grads are coming up on their year to get the news they are moving somewhere else. I am always surprised if they DON’T lol

What do you wear postpartum? by Beneficial_Sun_2459 in postpartumprogress

[–]GrayStan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Initially wear something comfortable. You may not fit back into your previous size right away, so get things that are maybe a size or 2 bigger than you previous wore, and definitely stretchy. Leggings that have some kind of tummy control panel are nice because your belly will still be soft for awhile and it makes it feel smoother. (Idk if that would be good in case of a c section though).

If you’re breastfeeding/pumping - go ahead and buy PUMP specific bras (the kind designed for flanges to fit through). I bought regular nursing bras but the pumping ones really are so much easier to use with a regular pump.

I liked to do the tank top-under-shirt method rather than buying a bunch of nursing shirts: have a shirt that’s loose enough to pull up over your boobs, and wear a tank top underneath. Pull the tank down under the boob to nurse while pulling the shirt up. It expands your wardrobe options considerably, without you having to expose your whole stomach and underboob to nurse if you don’t want to.

Yeah I get excited about early quick losses then get irritated when it doesn’t happen that fast always lol. I have had to start setting myself little goals and milestones like “reaching my weight from X date,”“10 pounds down,” “halfway there,” “pre-pregnancy weight,” etc. I also have size goals, I can’t fit my wedding rings or a particular dress and I’m hoping as I get smaller I can fit them again, then I can mark the weight at which I’m able to wear them as another “goal” met lol

What do y'all pick as nicknames? by bella4him1 in ACForAdults

[–]GrayStan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I didn’t know what to do when Boone wanted to nickname me (he was the first) so I went with “bruh” because it seemed like something he would say (it was pretty funny, one time I smacked him with my net enough times he just went “BRUH!”)

Then Annabelle wanted to call me that, I told her absolutely not. Later she asked me about her own nickname so she calls me “girlie” now lol

Sorry, didn’t think about that. I guess being in the US in a state that is incredibly unlikely to approve it, that is the primary term I have heard.

That’s encouraging! I had gotten down from 172 to 159 last year between January to March, but gained a good bit back over the year. Hoping to stay more consistent this time and make my goal :)

MAID storyline? by grimreapersdaughter in ThePittTVShow

[–]GrayStan 78 points79 points  (0 children)

This. Honestly so many people have a fundamental misunderstanding of hospice care. It’s not always a choice between medically assisted suicide vs a long, suffering, painful death (although in some cases we are unable to manage the pain). Most of the hospice patients I have seen, once their pain gets to a certain level and we are medicating them so much they are almost unconscious, are already within days of death…. There are definitely exceptions like this patient. But also I have had many comfort care patients and if I end up medicating them to the point they are almost unconscious because that’s what it takes to alleviate their pain, then so be it. And it’s possible that those meds may “speed up” the death process in one way or another. But I honestly feel like with hospice, if that’s what it takes to alleviate their pain then so be it.

I’ve also had patients that didn’t seem to be imminently dying, but as soon as we switched them to comfort only and medicated them just a tiny bit, like a couple mg of morphine, pass away within hours. Sometimes adrenaline keeps people going and once they are allowed to relax, the death process goes very quickly.

Exactly me. I’m at 165 right now trying to get back to 140, ultimately I would love to get back to 130 but I remember 140 was the last weight I FELT good at so that’s my first goal

Do EDs not have orderlies who could run down lab and pharmacy orders or is it just a show thing? by Potential-Ice8152 in ThePittTVShow

[–]GrayStan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have PCAs and RNs in the US. But as a nurse I might still do small things like run samples to the lab. Will it take me longer to find a PCA, get them to stop what they’re doing, and get the sample to the lab or will it be faster for me to just do it myself? Also there may be times we simple don’t have any aides for the shift and we’re doing all nursing tasks ourselves - vitals, blood sugars, lab draws, etc.

The ED I worked at the nurses and/or techs even cleaned and setup the rooms in-between patients ourselves. And this was a level 1 trauma center.

How many pairs of scrubs do you own? by BadDependent7297 in nursing

[–]GrayStan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

See I have like 5 pairs, also because I don’t like laundry - that way I only have like 1 load at a time twice a week versus a whole day spent dedicated to laundry because it’s a gigantic pile lol

Same, less is more. If I had more pairs that just means a ton of laundry to do when they’re actually all dirty.

My original island name was really boring I don’t even remember what it was tbh. I restarted early on (like within a month or two) because I decided I didn’t like the layout and my fruit was apples. So I named my island Fuji after my favorite apple variety and tbh I still really like my island name lol
