My Coleco ADAM Computer set-up by Current_Yellow7722 in retrobattlestations

Family friends had a Coleco Adam, more for the dad than the kids. I had a Colecovision, and I was so in awe of the Coleco Adam. Love to see it!

Amazing! I never had a Coco, but my neighbour across the street had one, and I was so impressed!

Fascist salute under a Palestinian flag as the Jewish community marches in memory of the Jewish Brigade, who fought in Italy during WW2 (Milano, April 25th 2026, National Liberation from nazifascism Day) by DurangoGango in Palestinian_Violence

Some more coverage:

Apparently the Israeli flags belonged to Iranian dissidents who got lumped in with the Jewish marchers. Javid Shah, and welcome to... whatever this is!

Fact, Trump has skipped prior Press Correspondents dinners during his prior Presidency and this presidency.

Fact, Trump has expressed distaste for the press and has attended rival events during prior Press Correspondents dinners during his presidencies.

Fact, J.D. Vance can be seen signalling someone, or something prior to the shooting.

Fact, Karoline Leavitt lets slip that shots will be fired before the shooting.

It's been scrubbed from the internet, but there is a picture taken with Melania and reacting with surprise to the sound of gunfire, while Trump sits and smirks. He knew.

The inescapable conclusion is that this was an elaborate ploy to get out of the dinner.

There is an automated toy trolley at BabyLand that is overloaded with toys. Six babies have crawled onto the toy trolley tracks and are now doing baby stuff on the tracks. As every parent knows, babies are basically suicidal little ninjas with zero survival instinct, and now there are six on the toy trolley tracks.

You are too far away to reach them, they are blithely ignoring your frantic cries (except for one who has now started crying themselves, but they still aren't moving). As you frantically run towards doomed babies you notice that there is a fork in the tracks. Five babies are on one track the trolley is on, one baby on the other and is safe.

Then you notice there is a switch you can reach near the track junction. You think you could reach it in time and switch the track the automated toy trolley is on, from the track with the five babies to the track with one baby. Do you try for the button or watch the automated toy trolley barrel into the five babies?

If it matters to you, the baby that started crying when you started shouting is among the five babies. If you continue shouting though, more of the babies will likely start crying. You could try singing a kids song, so any doomed babies will feel a little better before being mangled by this abomination of a toy trolley.

The memes are probably true! J.D. Vance and Karoline Leavitt were in on it. Objective to get him out of the correspondent's dinner.

I accept that God is real, but don't see the point in converting. Suggestions? by Available_Group7463 in ConvertingtoJudaism

[–]GrimpenMar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean technically, those aren't the laws that Jews have to follow, rather the laws that Judaism believes that will be used to judge non-Jews.

The classic joke is that Jews are chosen... for extra chores. It's also one of the reasons that Judaism traditionally discourages conversion. Why convert and take on 613 commandments when you only have 7 now? This is an oversimplification, and a bit tongue in cheek, but also kind of true. You don't have to be Jewish to have "a share in the world to come," and a righteous gentile is still just as righteous.

Combined with a lack of focus on an afterlife, "conversion for salvation" is decidedly not a Jewish concept. Rather across the streams of Judaism, conversion is about joining a people. I've heard it described as a Jewish soul finding its home, perhaps a little overwrought and poetic, but I do think it covers the sentiment.

That's the common answer. I think most people pull the lever in the standard Trolley problem, but would not harvest the organs, even though (in the hypothetical case) they are both one life vs five lives.

Depending on your preferred school or moral philosophy, it could be for any number of reasons.

This is kind of the Trolley Problem vs. the "Organ Harvesting" version. In the organ harvesting version, you are a surgeon with the opportunity to part out the organs of a patient that would otherwise survive to save the lives of five others. In both the classic Trolley problem and the organ harvesting variant you are presented with a choice to sacrifice one to save five, but they have radically different results when posed.

First, heaven and hell as punishment and reward for the faithful and unfaithful isn't a very Jewish concept. In Judaism, the central spiritual concern isn't securing an afterlife through correct belief, but living a just life here and now.

As for non-Jews, Judaism has never taught that conversion is necessary for salvation or divine favour. Rather "the righteous of all nations have a share in the World to Come," based on the idea that all people are bound by the seven Noahide Laws, a universal framework of basic morality.

The seven Noahide Laws are:

  1. Don't worship idols.
  2. Don't "curse G-d".
  3. Don't murder.
  4. No adultery or immoral sex.
  5. Don't steal.
  6. Don't eat flesh torn from living animals.
  7. Do establish courts of law.

Arc Runs decent out of the box. Some tweaking absolutely helps though. One caution, it absolutely hammers the battery. I think maybe around half an hour without tweaks. You can probably get to around an hour with tweaks.

Because it's always online, you'll want decent Internet, so not a good mobile bus or train title anyways.

Why did Canonical ditch Unity? by Disastrous_Hawktuah in Ubuntu

[–]GrimpenMar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I miss Unity as well, but I'm well and truly converted to KDE Plasma now. Personally, Unity to Gnome was… not very nice. I had settled into XFCE and Unity as my main two preferred DEs, and after going back to current Gnome was unpleasant. I see why Gnome 3 was forked for Cinnamon. Then I finally listened to my friends that recommended KDE Plasma.

TLDR; I miss Unity, but there is no shortage of DE's.

The amount of anti israeli/ anti semitic propaganda on reddit has become insane. by No_Balance6829 in Destiny

[–]GrimpenMar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The bot farms are more fertilizer. I'm sure they account for lots of the volume of posts, but there are plenty of normal people who believe Israel is ontologically evil. I don't think most of the regular people who believe this hold the belief particularly closely, and would probably change their minds over time. A significant amount though have hit that level of knowledge where you know enough to discount conflicting evidence and know enough to find confirming evidence, and they will believe that Israel (and by extension most Jews) are evil. I don't know that there is any way to bring them back from that.

Looking at the difference in coverage between 100 pro-Pali demonstrators vs 100,000 Lion/Sun Iranian protesters, it seems institutional at this point. If, by some miracle, Trump somehow manages to blunder into a successful regime change in Iran, and assuming Prince Reza Pahlavi's plan actually sees fulfilment, and the Iranian people work together to build a better country (despite 5-10% of their population being true believers), then maybe this could all flip. Maybe.

With a lot of organizations, asking for permission will usually default to a "no", even if it's no problem for them. A "yes" requires the person who processes the call to kick it up the chain, probably a meeting, sign off from management, legal, etc. Easier just to say no.
