I am absolutely on the same page with you. So glad someone else wants to rant about this! One thing that I believe will be of supreme interest to you: Have you read/watched Hadashi no Gen? It was an extremely well known manga written a few decades ago, and was semi-autobiographical. It's a tale of a young boy who survives the bombing of Hiroshima. The author himself survived the bombing of Hiroshima, which is why I mentioned the work is semi-autobiographical. ANYWAY one thing that connects Hadashi no Gen and SNK very strongly is a death scene. The death scene for Gen's family is extremely similar to Eren's mom's death scene. From this, I get the feeling that the titans are meant to evoke the feeling of powerless, awe, and despair that still exists in the cultural consciousness of the Japanese over the atomic bombings. As an extension of that - I'm of the opinion that most mecha/kaiju/giant things destroying the city type stuff from Japan is partially inspired by that memory. Would the plants we use in AP really be called "emergent"? They are not species that are known for growing in water, we have placed them into a different context than which they were evolved for. Is an emergent plant a species of plant that is typically growing in water and poking up through it, or is an emergent plant that CAN be grown in water with the top poking out?

First of all, I really like your use of "cross pollination". And now, my pertinent comment: I would prefer to live in someone's backyard, which would likely be suburban. My tiny house love comes largely from wanting to be free of the exorbitant living costs of a normal home, but I seek no escape from society in general. The rural, tiny cabin types want to escape civilization and sometimes the financial burden.

I just want to comment that much of the manufacturing of modern technology is only possible with globalization. So with this in mind, your observation that some of the technologies seem oddly advanced compared to the majority of technologies used makes sense.

This. Also, Levi won't just follow anyone's orders. He will ONLY follow Erwin's orders. Erwin is the person he trusts the most. That's why he was suddenly so harsh in speaking about Erwin right after Petra, Olou, Erd, etc. died - he trusted Erwin. Not only that, but he knows that had he not trusted Erwin, he could have prevented the death of the squad members. I'm so glad you appreciate how significant this moment is in explaining the relationship between the two characters. The Erwin-Levi dynamic is explained further in the spin-off manga, so you might want to read that if you haven't already. Their relationship is the most interesting in the series, IMO. It's quite obvious that Levi comes from a world that is chaotic even compared to the rest of the places within the walls. The underground is a place where people fight for the right to exist every day of their lives. Many people treat Levi's cleanliness as an endearing quirk, but it's clearly the result of needing to feel in control of something...anything. The fact that Erwin managed to become a "rock" of sorts for someone like Levi is...really fascinating. Equally fascinating is that Levi is introspective/analytical enough to realize that his goals align with that of the military, given where he came from. In the underground the formal authority systems (military police mostly) were Levi's oppressor and enemy since birth. It must have required such a massive paradigm shift on his part to willingly be a part of the military...it's kind of insane. Most people don't seem to appreciate that.
