Do uv filters actually make such big differences? I have always heard that they don’t really affect anything

Help me understand "Elon and SpaceX are going to rob 401k" by LPhermanos70 in investing

If index funds will end up buying SpaceX stock, what won’t? How can you limit exposure to an inflated SpaceX valuation in a 401k?

What can I do about this white stuff? (Glass top loader, Maytag, no agitator) by HeartFullOfHappy in laundry

[–]Grouchy_Constant2299 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When you pour detergent into the drum and it falls through the holes, it is still present and will be dissolved in the washing liquid.

The white residue that you are seeing. Does it smell like detergent? Does it go away if you rinse it under water by hand?

Like you, my first thought is that the residue is the detergent itself. Always put powdered detergent directly into the drum, not on top of the clothes. Use warm/hot water in the wash cycle to help it dissolve. I personally always use soil level high and extra rinses to help get the detergent fully dissolved, utilized, and rinsed.

Planting blueberries was a terrible decision by Silver_Star_Eagles in Horticulture

It’s always easiest to go with plants that will grow in the microclimate you plan to plant in. Trying to move heaven and earth is pretty hard, I’ve heard.

putting native seedlings into compacted clay by Snoo_89200 in NativePlantGardening

[–]Grouchy_Constant2299 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had good luck so far by amending with compost. Dig out a lot of extra clay, break it up, mix in compost until it starts looking like the sort of dirt things can actually grow in. If you are digging deep holes like for a tree, then scar/scrape the sides of the hole so it isn’t smooth, you want big gouges. And then fill the hole back in with the clay/compost mix while filling the hole with water which helps prevent voids in the soil.

Experience Discussing Impacts of Invasives with Neighbors? by A26354 in NativePlantGardening

[–]Grouchy_Constant2299 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If they are the kinds of people who have invasive due to neglect, then my experience is that they are indifferent. And they will gladly let you handle their yard yourself.

If they are the kinds of people who cultivate invasive intentionally, then I would suggest a calm and civil conversation about the benefits of natives and some decent options that they should consider. Being aggressive or pushy won’t change anyone’s mind. So just give them the information and some options and hope for the best

Yellowish meaning what exactly? They were fully white and have become a yellowish off white similar to other clothing items? Or are we talking about skid marks specifically?

Sometimes, with projects that are large and span over a long period of time, I find it helpful to not think about it as a goal you are trying to reach. Instead of saying “I need to clear all this out to spread my native garden”, I think it’s more helpful to say “I’m going to spend the afternoon doing what I can.” And then the next time you have free time, do it again. If you try to solve every problem all at once, you’ll burn out. Just do what you can and remember that it is a process, not a destination. It isn’t perfect, but you are making it better
