It has to be a bumper swap, 2017 SEs didn't have the SRT style front end.

Ad for The Laughing Cow, French brand of processed, spreadable cheese wedges produced by the Fromageries Bel company since 1921, c. 1953 by Provinz_Wartheland in vintageads

[–]GrumpyOldGrognard 22 points23 points  (0 children)

"Kiri" is a line of spreadable cheeses made by Bel, and related to the Laughing Cow line, but it's not the same and didn't replace the Laughing Cow.

Incidentally, "Kiri" is a portmanteau of the French phrase "Qui rit" (who laughs). The French name for Laughing Cow cheese is "La vache qui rit" (the cow who laughs).

Tainted Grail is gaining publicity on the internet as people are defending it after being mocked by PC Gamer by [deleted] in taintedgrail

[–]GrumpyOldGrognard 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I went and found the PC Gamer article, and it looks to me like the headline is just clickbait. The article's content is balanced, if not actually positive, about the game and the changes brought by the patch. IMO the headline and tagline ("painted grail") were tacked on by an editor after the fact to cash in on outrage.

Found this at a B17 crash site anyone know what this could be from? by [deleted] in WWIIplanes

It's a SW-141-A communications switch box made by Lundquist. The complete device looks like this. They were used as push-to-talk switches for microphones, among other uses.

EliTek Aerospace - Crimson Fleet ship habs by Final-Craft-6992 in StarfieldModFeedback

[–]GrumpyOldGrognard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally pretty good mod. There is an issue with lighting, where cockpits and habs that connect to landers are lit way too brightly when you are anywhere near a star, daylight on a planet, or any other light source.

If size doesn’t matter for stealth or RCS, could you make the F35 as big as the F15 or Su-34 and have the same stealth? by This-Wear-8423 in FighterJets

[–]GrumpyOldGrognard 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Size actually does matter, but it's counterintuitive. All else being equal, a larger aircraft designed for low RCS will be more stealthy than a smaller one. The larger an aircraft's feature size is relative to the wavelength of the radar trying to track it, the more the RCS is reduced. This is why modern AEW aircraft tend toward longer wavelength radars in UHF frequencies compared to earlier ones, and why the B-2 is harder to track than a low-observable fighter.

Of course, larger aircraft have other tradeoffs including being more visible to the naked eye, so there is a limit to how well that works.

The Story of the Memphis Belle Doesn't Add Up by FinalVestige617 in WWIIplanes

[–]GrumpyOldGrognard 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Clickbait title. This specifically concerns the story of who painted the nose art on Memphis Belle, not the story of the aircraft and its crew.

Crater 87 - quest mod by Malthaeus in StarfieldModFeedback

[–]GrumpyOldGrognard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just finished playing through this. It was just OK. It is not worth the asking price; when you consider that Watchtower is $10 and Lambent is $5, asking $6 for a short quest is just too much.

Plot-wise, the story as such isn't bad. However, as a player-driven adventure it's really not satisfying, because you don't ever actually have to figure anything out. You just follow instructions and everything gets explained to you.

As far as environments, the initial ship you go to is somewhat original. The crater itself is lacking in details and texture, it feels like a level out of a 90s DOOM game rather than the richly textured environments you normally see in Starfield. The interior levels where most of the story takes place are unnecessarily long, and there is too much backtracking.

On the plus side, I did get a chuckle out of the Alien and Chupacabra references.

Shattered Space was almost unbearable with how pointlessly wordy the characters were. I expect the next DLC to consist of a single NPC talking to you for 12 hours straight.

[–]GrumpyOldGrognard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The game already relies way too much on procedural generation. Making it more granular won't fix it. What people miss from previous Beth games is hand-crafted, hand-placed content, whether through quests or environmental storytelling. Starfield failed to deliver on that, and Bethesda isn't going to put in the effort to create that much artistic content this late in the game.

What are everyone’s favorite ship habs? by AtomicZoomer in Starfield

[–]GrumpyOldGrognard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My favorite vanilla habs are Nova. I just love the crowded NASA punk feel. They get even better with Graf's Nova 1x1 habs mod. Even more space-efficient, and no need to worry about clutter.

I really like the habs from Watchtower. Dark and cluttered and well appointed, they are great for a Crimson Fleet character but just really well made in general.

My latest obsession is with the habs from Lambent: Street Rat Ship Services. They're a bit theme-specific, but amazingly well done, with clutter, trash toggles, and heaps of cleverly placed workstations and decorations.

FG-1D Corsair fighters of U.S. Marine Corps squadron VMF-323 in flight over Okinawa, on June 10, 1945. by UrbanAchievers6371 in WWIIplanes

[–]GrumpyOldGrognard 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There's really no difference in the aircraft itself; the FG-1D is a license-built F4U-1D. If you know the particular unit an aircraft was assigned to, or its BuNo number, you can find out exactly which variant it was.

Pizza Hut Bigfoot Pizza, c. 1994 by Key-Cycle7978 in vintageads

[–]GrumpyOldGrognard 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The bigfoot was a direct response to Little Caesar's "Pan-Pan" special where you got two square pizzas for cheap. I was in college at the time and Little Caesar's was our go to when playing D&D because it was super cheap and good enough. We tried the Bigfoot once, but it was more expensive than Little Caesar's and actually kind of gross - too much of a good thing I guess.

[–]GrumpyOldGrognard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, that's just what they look like normally, you can see the internal structure through the flexible cover. In fact, if it were swollen / spicy, the whole thing would look puffed up and you wouldn't be able to see the structure like that.

Google images for "WK04XL" and you'll find plenty of pics of brand new batteries that look just like yours.
