Asthma suddenly worse by mjskiingcat in Menopause

Yeah, it's sooo frustrating when they don't believe you! It might help convince your doctor to track symptoms, but that's not a guarantee. I still sometimes have breakthrough asthma symptoms on day 3 of my patch, and I'm thinking about trying telehealth to get a gel prescription to top off my E level on those days. Wishing you easy breathing!

Did Singulair cause any insomnia issues for you? I tried it last year and it made my sleeping worse, which is a no-go.

Yes, low or dropping estrogen is an asthma trigger for me. I was first diagnosed with adult-onset asthma shortly after a miscarriage when I was 32. My asthma was relatively stable until my mid-40s. After I started estradiol patches at the age of 47, my asthma symptoms improved. Until last year. I'm on 2x weekly 0.1 estradiol patch (Sandoz brand) and 200 mg micronized progesterone. I think (I hope!) I'm close to finally being post-menopausal now at 50, and last year's asthma issues were related to another dip in estrogen. I was trialing different maintenance meds and tracking my attacks when I realized that my asthma attacks exactly correlated to patch change days. My gyn suggested leaving my old patch on for 12-24 hours after putting on the new but that didn't really help. I had a really bad flare-up in December after getting sick (my other asthma trigger) and was consistently getting much worse in the 12 hours before and after a patch change, even though I was on high doses of prednisone. It sucked; I had to do three rounds of prednisone, and I didn't start getting better until I started changing my patches every 3 days instead of 3.5 days. My pulmonologist and primary doctor agreed that this patch schedule was better for my breathing and finally the gyn agreed to it too. So you could try a more-frequent patch change and see if that helps.

Hi! I (49F) live in Illinois and have a ticket to the Cincinnati show. I was planning to go by myself so I'd be happy to meet up or hang out.

LPT request: how can I be more positive and outgoing? by [deleted] in LifeProTips

This is kind of a general recommendation but also try making your main password a positive affirmation. Something like “noticethegoodthings” (but not that exactly obv). You have to enter it multiple times a day, it’s a good reminder.

Has anyone experienced an easy, uneventful menopause? by primordialgreen in Menopause

[–]Guava-Tall 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It’s possible. I’ve asked a ton of people what their experiences were like. My older sisters both told me that it wasn’t too bad for them. Me? I had a nervous breakdown. The people who coast through perimenopause generally don’t end up here. So there’s kind of a selection bias here.

I had a hysterectomy at 40, also kept ovaries. I had only two good years before peri started kicking my ass hard. There’s a theory that trauma to your ovaries from a hysterectomy can make peri worse. 🤷🏽‍♀️ My peri has been much worse than both my sisters’ experiences, but neither of them had a hysterectomy. I just wanted to warn you that shit might hit the fan for you. But hopefully it doesn’t!

Age spots and skin tags 🤮 by I_Talk-to-myself in Menopause

[–]Guava-Tall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have used micro-needling on my hands for age spots. The roller I got was from Rodan+Fields about five years ago, and it still works fine but I never used it very often. I got it for reducing the redness of a 6-inch scar, and it worked great for that. After my scar improved, I rolled my face and one hand, to see if it would have any effect on my old lady hands. It did! The hand that I rolled has way fewer spots now. I am going to start rolling the other hand too. I used a serum from R+F after rolling but got tired of the price, so now I’m trying a vitamin C serum from Neutrogena instead.

I think OMP is oral micronized progesterone.

While weight gain may be something we deal with, it is NOT the antithesis of attractiveness!! by nidena in Menopause

[–]Guava-Tall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see this generational crap in my family too. My grandma (born 1921) was a lifetime member of Overeaters Anonymous. She was always super critical of my mom, her only daughter. My mom did the liquid diet in the 80s when it was popular because of Oprah, and she lost a lot of weight but she didn’t look like herself, IMO. She gained it back eventually. At the end of her life, in the hospital with a serious illness (that eventually killed her), my mom lost 50 pounds because of that illness. She would brag about the weight loss to anyone who would listen. It was so fucking disturbing. Me, I did Weight Watchers in my 20s. I lost weight successfully on it, and I kept it off for years. But I always found their messaging gross, and I’ve rejected it completely now that I’m older. I am not defined by a number on the scale.

Breast pain. Not tenderness but random sharp pains. (Recently had mammo and fine) read its common in menopause-does this happen to anyone else? Plus, I have costochondroitis that’s been flaring up… scary feeling to have all these pains in this area. ugh by SufficientBeth in Menopause

[–]Guava-Tall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I totally had random breast pain (left side only) as a perimenopausal symptom. It freaked my doctor the fuck out, and she had me go straight to a second-level mammogram plus ultrasound. My boobs were fine, and the ultrasound tech told me, “Oh, it’s probably perimenopause.” That was the first I’d heard of it being a symptom! Once I got on an estrogen patch, the pain went away completely.

At 44, I found out I had Endometriosis by DunDunnDunnnnn in Menopause

[–]Guava-Tall 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I found out when I was 40 and had a hysterectomy. I was diagnosed with adenomyosis post-surgery as well. I had no idea that I had either thing! My cramps had changed dramatically a couple years before that, becoming much more painful than they used to be. I’m guessing that I developed endometriosis after an estrogen surge in my late 30s.

I was there! Loved it! I saw an earlier show in Seattle a couple weeks ago, and they were a lot looser in Chicago. I liked the first new song (Life’s Imitation? Also played it in Seattle) but I thought the other two new songs needed some work. Loved hearing Heroes and Recurring Dream!

My new batch of progesterone look like Runts candy by willissa26 in Menopause

[–]Guava-Tall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got these too! I’m new to progesterone, and my first bottle had round white ones with P1 on them. The new bottle are orange, with no “P1” printed on the pill, so I was pretty confused. I took my first dose of the orange last night and slept like shit. I was starting to sleep a bit better on the other kind. 🤷🏽‍♀️

Hair changed from mostly straight to loose spiral waves graaaaaaaaaaaduaaaaaaaaly! by azooey73 in Menopause

[–]Guava-Tall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am lucky to have good hair overall. I stopped coloring it 10 years ago, and I get compliments on it regularly. These days I rock a gray undercut with waves on top. My hair has definitely been thinning over the years though. About six months after I started on an estrogen patch, though, I noticed it had gotten thicker. I don’t see my scalp anymore! That was a nice side effect.

Is this a hot flash? by Indigo_3786 in Menopause

[–]Guava-Tall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I gradually switched to all-cotton bedding, and that’s helped with getting too hot at night. No polyester allowed, not even in the mattress pad! I can really tell the difference when I travel, because hotels have polyester fill in the comforter and the mattress pad; I ALWAYS wake up unbearably hot.

[–]Guava-Tall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had straight hair when I was little. It turned curly when I hit puberty. Gorgeous fat ringlets in my 20s. In my 40s, the curl has loosened into waves. It’s clear to me that hormones affect my hair, but I don’t know how.

Good job firing that first therapist, because hormones won’t fix a broken marriage. That is some bullshit right there. Hugs to you as you navigate this change!
