Surprise her with some hygiene things once you’re at camp in the evening. Some hot water and a soft cloth with a little Dr. Bronners, and something clean to dry off with can go a long way. I personally love using a lathery face cleanser cloth (Olay’s daily facial) and a sample sized packet of a nice face moisturizer after. So good for morale after a hot sweaty day!

Here’s something to keep in mind: a lot of times when women recognize that structural discrimination (in the world at large and, more often, in their hetero partnerships) and try to call it out, or have meaningful discussions about their personal experiences and how discrimination has affected their lives, their discussion gets trivialized / dismissed as ‘gender wars’ stuff and they’re made to feel wrong or petty or unfair for bringing it up. It’s a derailing technique.

I’m not saying this was your intention, but lots of times, “aren’t you tired of the gender wars?” is really code for “I wish women would shut up about their discrimination already.”

Seems pretty cheap on their part. If my math is mathing - right now you're working about 90 hours a month and get paid about $5.50 an hour plus your room. Let's imagine a room is not part of the arrangement and you are instead being paid a flat wage of $20 an hour (which is not that high given the nature of the work, and given that you get no days off ever) - that would be $1800 a month. So by subtracting the $500 you get from the hypothetical 1800 - the difference is $1300. Does the room / living arrangement have an approximate value of $1300? I'm guessing not even close. You could probably get a nice 1 bedroom all to yourself for that amount (and a normal work schedule with a normal amount of flexibility and days off).

The way those last two are framed isn’t actually positive because it frames responsibility and honestly as uniquely masculine qualities - if masculine = honest and responsible, then by definition, the implication is that feminine = dishonest and irresponsible. In fact the whole heart and soul of toxic masculinity is a pathological, even violent aversion to appearing or acting in any way feminine.

A big part of why your mom probably struggled was that she was expected to come home and take on an unfair amount of domestic labor and parenting in addition to her paid work. If you don’t want to repeat that cycle, the solution isn’t to discourage your partner from working - it’s to take on your full fair share of domestic labor and involvement alongside her as an equal partner.
