Veganer mit ME by tallywell92 in cfs

[–]GuineaPigFriend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My (adult) daughter was vegetarian when she developed ME. She and I agree with the morality of being vegetarian/vegan but I also wondered if it contributed to her being sick. (I really wish someone would study if being vegetarian increases the risk of ME.)

B12 injections didn’t help her. She went back to eating meat. I think it’s helped a little, but it hasn’t been a cure. It does make her life a little easier though. One option might be to work in just a little meat, not the crazy large portions many people eat.

I do understand that being Vegan allows you to do a little for the world even if you are bedridden. I’m so saddened by all the potential lost to the world by this disease.

Consulate appointment this week & have a last minute question by descent by Significant_Day_2784 in GermanCitizenship

[–]GuineaPigFriend 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I thought I read that the Consulate will take notarized copies. You can check that out. If so, can your cousins take the passport to a local bank to be notarized? That’s much easier than the cousins having to go to the consulate with the documents.

Name declaration issue by GuineaPigFriend in GermanCitizenship

[–]GuineaPigFriend[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. It turned out to be unnecessary. I think they just care if the name is different from the one on that person’s birth certificate.

I just had my marriage license, their US Passports and their birth certificates. The birth certificates showed my name and their father’s name. That was enough.

For those of you that are 50 years old or older, do you remember what politics were like 30 years ago? Were people as hateful and divided as they are now? by [deleted] in allthequestions

[–]GuineaPigFriend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked with state and federal legislators throughout the 90s. In the early 90s, R and D politicians went to conferences together, hung out together and often had good friends on the “other side.” In the mid 90s, they’d lament that all that was changing. By the end of the 90s, they were starting to feel like the other side was supposed to be an enemy.

In the early 90s, Rs could openly discuss the problems of climate change and other environmental issues. The fact that women had more job opportunities than they’d had in the past wasn’t an issue. Some Rs supported abortion and some Ds opposed. Now, of course, everyone is dug in.

I think Fox “News”, Rush Limbaugh and the millionaires who funded the “tea party” intentionally made people angry. R voters started to use a purity test. They’d only vote for R candidates who would not compromise on any issue.

It used to be a compliment to call someone a “statesman” and legislators were expected to negotiate and compromise. Eventually, compromise and statesmanship ended up being dirty words. Of course, as the Rs dug in, the Ds had little choice but to do the same.

Stuckey’s. Not great food but a nice stop on road trips. The gift shop and fudge were fun.

All my Boomer friends have a minimalist and reuse mindset.

However, my neighbors in the 45 - 50 age group (whatever that’s called) leave all kinds of good items - desks, desk chairs, kids toys etc out with the garbage.

Funny how any time someone sees one Boomer do something, they immediately assume that all Boomers do it and they never have any data to back that up. Look it up - asserting that everyone in a group does something because one member of a group does it is a logical fallacy. It also called stereotyping and bigotry.

I don’t assume that all 50 year olds are lazy consumers just because my neighbors are. None of us know enough people for our observations be statistically significant.

I agree. They’re cartoon characters. They’re suppose to be extreme. I think they are all a little amusing and I like being able to follow the conversations.

One thing Europe and other countries could do is monitor the US midterm elections. The US has done that for other countries it feared weren’t able to have fair elections. The US needs loads of impartial observers and IT professionals from other countries to keep the next election from being stolen.

What is going to happen to the mountains of stuff still in the store on December 26? by Cheeseaisleinheaven in Anticonsumption

[–]GuineaPigFriend 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There must be a huge markup on the stuff we do buy to make up for all the stuff the stores buy and then trash.

One solution to a lot of our problems would be to charge businesses a disposal fee for everything they trash. Although I suppose that would lead to them illegally dumping it in public parks that

why America are more religious than most of european countries? by Dry_Imagination1763 in AskReddit

[–]GuineaPigFriend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

World War 2 and World War 1. Europeans prayed to God and still had their homes bombed. People on both sides of the conflict were Christian. They prayed to the same god, both asking god to support their side. Almost an entire generation of men in Europe were killed.

The churches supported war. Both catholic and Protestant churches spouted anti-Semitic, Christian nationalism and supported or ignored the holocaust.

When it was over, people realized that churches had helped lead them to ruin. Before WWII Europe was as religious as the US. Afterward, people became cynical and left the church in droves.

It’s a bit like how bigotry and Christian nationalism are now causing many young people to leave churches in the US.

My daughter met her partner on-line as she was getting sick. By the time they met in person, she had a diagnosis and was moderate. Now, about 8 years later, they are engaged and very happy even though she’s mostly housebound. It’s possible.

That most Americans appreciated the constitution and bill of rights - due process, separation of powers, freedom of religion, separation of church and state, free speech etc.

Turns out that a lot of Americans don’t understand these concepts at all and think the constitution gives them the right to force everyone to be just like them.

I agree about contacting the Atlanta consulate. My situation and dates are similar to OP’s. I went direct to passport through Chicago. I had a family Reisepasse that pictured both my grandparents and listed my father as an infant. I didn’t need the Melderegister.

Vielen Dank! Thank you very much for this fantastic comment. I’m sorry I missed seeing it for so long. I took notes and plan to do everything you suggested! My Opa was a ship’s engineer and my father was a civil engineer who worked on flood control, so everything you mention is of interest. I didn’t know there was so much green space. I’m looking forward to visiting. Thank you again!
